Child rapist in first execution under new Saudi king

Saudi Arabia on Monday beheaded a serial child rapist, in the first execution since King Salman's rise to the throne in the conservative Muslim monarchy, official media said.

"Mousa bin Saeed Ali al-Zahrani lured several underage girls and kidnapped them. He also threatened them and their relatives and physically assaulted them in his home," the Saudi Press Agency said, citing the interior ministry.

"He raped them, detained them, forced them to drink alcohol, and forced some to watch pornographic material."

The report did not disclose his nationality.

Zahrani was beheaded in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, bringing to 13 the number of Saudis and foreigners executed this year, according to an AFP tally.

Salman acceded to the throne last Friday after his half-brother King Abdullah died aged about 90, following a reign of almost 10 years.

The kingdom has faced constant international criticism over its human rights record, including the use of the death penalty.

Under Abdullah, the number of executions jumped from 27 in 2010 to around 80 annually, with 87 last year.

An independent expert working on behalf of the United Nations called in September for an immediate moratorium on executions in Saudi Arabia.

But the interior ministry insists that the execution of convicts such as Zahrani aims "to maintain security and realise justice".

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia's strict version of Islamic sharia law.

Three more, including Pakistani, beheaded under new Saudi king

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on Tuesday beheaded two more of its citizens and a Pakistani, continuing the strictest punishment under new King Salman.

Latif Khan Nurzada, a Pakistani, was executed for trafficking heroin into the kingdom. He was executed in the holy city of Makkah, the ministry said in a statement.

A second convict, Omar bin Yahya bin Ibrahim al Barkati was tried and convicted of incest, the interior ministry said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

“He was executed as punishment for his crime and as a lesson to others,” the ministry said, adding that authorities carried out the sentence in southwestern Asir region.

In a separate case, Yassir bin Hussein al Hamza was executed in northwestern Jawf region after his trial and confession for smuggling amphetamine pills, the ministry said.

According to an AFP tally, their executions bring to 16 the number of Saudis and foreigners put to death this year in the kingdom.

Four have been executed since King Salman took office last Friday after the death of his predecessor Abdullah.

Under Abdullah, the number of executions jumped from 27 in 2010 to around 80 annually, with 87 last year.

The oil-rich Gulf Arab state faces constant international criticism over its human rights record, including the use of the death penalty.

Saudi beheads murderer, 5th execution under new king

Saudi Arabia on Sunday beheaded a convicted murderer, bringing to five the number of people executed since new King Salman took office, continuing the kingdom's use of the harshest punishment.

Abdelrahman al-Jahni, a Saudi, was convicted of shooting another man dead during a dispute, the interior ministry said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

The sentence was carried out in the holy city of Medina.

According to an AFP tally, Jahni is the latest of 17 locals and foreigners to be executed this year.

Five have been beheaded since King Salman took office on January 23 after the death of his predecessor Abdullah.

The interior ministry says the death penalty in such cases reflects the government's commitment to "maintaining security, realising justice".

But the kingdom has faced constant international criticism over its human rights record, including the use of the death penalty.

Under Abdullah, the number of executions jumped from 27 in 2010 to around 80 annually, with 87 recorded last year.

Saudi Arabia has faced constant international criticism over its human rights record, including the use of the death penalty.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under the country's strict version of Islamic sharia law.

Saudi Arabia executes Yemeni drug trafficker

Saudi Arabia on Wednesday beheaded a Yemeni charged with trafficking hashish, upping its number of executions this year to 28, according to the AFP.

The ministry told AFP Nayef al-Briki was convicted of moving large amounts of hashish into the country and trying to sell it and said the government was determined to crack down on narcotics. Al-Briki was executed in the town of Jizan, on the border of Yemen.

The country has lately faced criticism over its human rights record and rising use of the death penalty. In Saudi Arabia, under its strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia Law, crimes punishable by death include drug trafficking, rape, murder, apostasy and armed robbery.

Last year Saudi Arabia executed 87 people, up from 78 in 2013, AFP reported

Saudi Arabia beheads two men for murder

Saudi Arabia has beheaded two convicted murderers involved in separate cases, taking to 31 the number of executions in the kingdom this year.

The two Saudi men, identified as Nawaf al-Shemmari and Saad al-Houzaimi, were beheaded in the capital city of Riyadh on Sunday, the Saudi Interior Ministry said in a statement published by the official Saudi Press Agency.

The men were found guilty on separate incidents over charges of stabbing their respective relatives.

The latest beheading brings to 31 the number of people executed in the kingdom so far this year. Last year, Saudi authorities executed 87 people, up from 78 recorded in 2013.

Concern is growing about the increasing number of executions in Saudi Arabia. International human rights groups have applied pressure on authorities to reconsider executions, particularly those for non-fatal crimes.

Muslim clerics have also slammed Riyadh for indicting and then executing suspects without allowing them to defend themselves, describing the Saudi authorities as uncivilized.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi rule.

Saudi Arabia, ruled by a hereditary royal system, enjoys the full support of its close ally, the United States.
