Saudi Arabia beheads Jordanian national for drug trafficking

Saudi Arabia has beheaded a Jordanian on charges of drug trafficking, bringing to 32 the number of executions carried out in the kingdom in the first two months of 2015.

The convicted Jordanian drug smuggler, identified as Omar Mohammed Abdul Muti al-Rubai, was beheaded in the northwestern al-Jawf region, on Wednesday, the Saudi Interior Ministry said.

The execution was carried out after the convict allegedly confessed to trying to smuggle a large amount of amphetamines across the northern Jordan-Saudi border.

This is while the increasing number of executions in Saudi Arabia has drawn growing concern on the international stage. Riyadh carried out the death penalty against 87 people last year, up from 78 in 2013.

The country has come under particular criticism from rights groups for the executions carried out for non-fatal crimes.

According to the London-based rights group Amnesty International’s annual report on Wednesday, Saudi Arabia imposes death sentences "after unfair trials."

Amnesty International said Saudi Arabia, which has one of the highest execution rates in the world, has tortured or "otherwise coerced or misled [defendants] into making false confessions" before trial.

Muslim clerics have also slammed Riyadh for indicting and then executing suspects without giving them a chance to defend themselves.

Saudi authorities say the beheadings reveal the Saudi government’s commitment to “maintaining security and realizing justice.”

The execution “is committed to fighting drugs of all kinds due to the physical and social harm they cause,” the Saudi government added.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi rule.

Saudi officials execute convicts by sword and then hang their corpses from a helicopter for the public to see.

Saudi Arabia beheads Indian axe murderer, Pakistani

Saudi Arabia on Thursday beheaded an Indian axe murderer and a Pakistani heroin trafficker, bringing to 34 the number of death sentences carried out this year.

Vijay Kumar Saleem, of India, was convicted of killing a Yemeni by striking him in the head with the axe, an interior ministry statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency said.

The attack took place after a dispute at the farm where they worked, it said, adding that Saleem was executed in Riyadh.

Authorities also carried out a death sentence against the Pakistani, Hafiz Wifaq Rasoul Shah, in the Muslim holy city of Medina.

"Investigations led to his confession and he was tried and found guilty," a separate interior ministry statement said.

The Pakistani city of Karachi is a key transit point for heroin from Afghanistan.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Gulf has become an increasingly important market for illicit drugs in recent years.

The Saudi government says it "is committed to fighting drugs of all kinds due to the physical and social harm they cause".

It also says the death penalty in murder cases aims "to maintain security and realise justice".

Drug trafficking, rape, murder, apostasy and armed robbery are all punishable by death under the Gulf kingdom's strict version of Islamic sharia law.

Amnesty International said in its annual report released on Wednesday that death sentences are often imposed "after unfair trials".

The London-based watchdog said some defendants claimed to have been tortured or "otherwise coerced or misled into making false confessions" before trial.

According to an AFP count, the kingdom executed 87 people last year, up from 78 in 2013.

    Saudi beheads rapist, murderers

Saudi Arabia beheaded Tuesday a rapist and two murderers, bringing to 38 the number of death sentences carried out in the kingdom this year. Saudi Mohammed bin Ali bin Mohammed al-Bishi was convicted of raping his victim at gunpoint, the interior ministry said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

“He also committed a number of armed robberies causing panic amongst the society. He had entered a number of homes by force and tried to kidnap and rape women and children,” the statement said. Bishi was sentenced to death “as punishment and to serve as a deterrent to others”. Authorities carried out the sentence in the southwestern region of Asir.

In a separate case, Hamoud bin Salih bin Falih al-Zubi was executed in Riyadh for gunning down a fellow Saudi during a brawl. And another native of the kingdom, Falih bin Misnad bin Rabea al-Inzi, was beheaded in Qassim region for a fatal stabbing. Drug trafficking, rape, murder, apostasy and armed robbery are all punishable by death under the Gulf kingdom’s strict version of Islamic sharia law.

Amnesty International said in its annual report last week that death sentences are often imposed “after unfair trials”. The London-based watchdog said some defendants claimed to have been tortured or “otherwise coerced or misled into making false confessions” before trial. The kingdom executed 87 people last year, up from 78 in 2013, according to an AFP count.

Saudi Arabia executes Pinoy who killed employer in 2007

A Filipino worker convicted of killing his employer was executed Monday morning in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

"It is with sadness that we confirm the execution of overseas Filipino worker Joven Esteva at 9 am today (Saudi time),” DFA spokesman Charles Jose said in a statement.

Saudi Arabia, home to at least 1 million Filipinos, adheres to the Shari’a Law that imposes death penalty for a wide range of offenses and crimes, such as immorality, murder, sorcery, rape, and drug offenses, among others. Most executions are carried out by beheading.

Foreigners, including a number of Filipinos, have been executed in the past in Saudi Arabia.

Esteva, 39, was convicted of murdering his Saudi employer in 2007 and injuring his employer's son.

“We have provided Mr. Esteva all necessary and appropriate legal and consular assistance, including providing a lawyer, since his arrest in 2007,” Jose said.

Under Shariah Law, blood money or compensation given to the family of murder victims, allows those facing the death penalty, to escape capital punishment.

In exchange for blood money, the victim’s family, should they accept it, will execute a tanazul or an affidavit of forgiveness.

“Regrettably, despite efforts of Philippine government, family of victim refused to grant forgiveness," Jose said.

Jose said Esteva has already been buried in Saudi Arabia, in accordance with their law.

Saudi Arabia beheads 3 for drug trafficking

Saudi Arabia on Wednesday beheaded three people convicted of smuggling narcotics into the ultra-conservative kingdom, where executions have accelerated this year, the interior ministry said.

Amnesty International warned that the kingdom was "well on track" to surpass its previous annual execution record, on the back of this "unprecedented spike" in killings.

Hammud Hajuri from Yemen and Mohammed al-Qahtani, a Saudi, were executed in southwestern Jizan province after being found guilty of trafficking amphetamines and hashish, the foreign ministry said in a statement carried by the SPA state news agency.

It said a Syrian, Fadi Abdulrazzaq, was executed in the northern province of Jawf after having been convicted of smuggling amphetamines.

The latest beheadings bring to 43 the number since the start of 2015, according to an AFP tally.

Saudi beheads 'gang leader'; 44th execution in 2015

The beheading of a gang leader in Saudi Arabia on Thursday raised the number of executions carried out this year to 44, already more than half the total for 2014.

Amnesty International says Saudi Arabia is "well on track" to far exceed previous annual execution records.

Mansour bin Habeeb bin Mahdi Khalfan, a Saudi, was put to death Thursday in the kingdom's eastern region after having been convicted of "leading a gang" dealing in hashish, money laundering and forged documents, the interior ministry said.

According to an AFP tally, Khalfan was the 44th local or foreigner executed this year in Saudi Arabia, which Amnesty says has regularly been among the world's top five executioners.

London-based Amnesty says around half of this year's executions have been for drug-related offences.

The interior ministry cites deterrence as a reason for the punishment, while warning of "the physical and social harm" caused by drugs.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia's version of sharia Islamic law.

The Gulf state has carried out around 80 executions annually since 2011, with 87 last year by AFP's tally.

New Saudi execution takes year's tally to 45

RIYADH: A man convicted of murder was beheaded in the Saudi capital today, amid a steep rise in the number of executions in the ultra-conservative Gulf kingdom this year.

The beheading of Saad bin Abdullah al-Jadid, who had shot dead fellow Saudi Abdullah bin Faraj al-Gahtani, took to 45 the number of executions since January 1, according to an AFP count.

His execution was reported by the official SPA news agency, citing an interior ministry statement.

Rights group Amnesty International says the country has regularly been among the world's top five executioners and is "well on track" to far exceed previous annual records for executions.

Saudi Arabia has carried out around 80 executions annually since 2011, with 87 recorded last year by AFP.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia's version of sharia Islamic law.

Pakistani among 3 beheaded in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia beheaded a Pakistani and two Saudis on Tuesday, bringing to 48 the number of death sentences carried out this year.

That is more than half of the 87 people executed during all of 2014, according to an AFP tally.

Reasons for the surge are unclear but human rights group Amnesty International says Saudi Arabia is “well on track” to far exceed previous annual execution records.

The London-based watchdog says Saudi Arabia has regularly been among the world’s top five executioners.

Among Tuesday’s cases, Mumtaz Hussein Deen Ahmed, was executed in Medina after his conviction for smuggling heroin, the interior ministry said.

Najr bin Farajal Azmial Otaibi, a Saudi, was put to death in the western city of Taif for stoning and caning to death another man, the ministry said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

Another Saudi, Moeid bin Ali bin Moeidal Saadal Qahtani, was beheaded by the sword in Eastern Province for gunning down a man.

The ministry added that the execution of both Saudis was delayed until the children of their victims came of age to decide whether the sentences should be carried out.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s version of Islamic sharia law.

The cabinet affirmed on Monday that the kingdom’s legal system ensures “justice for all”, SPA reported.

But Christof Heyns, the UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, said in September that trials “are by all accounts grossly unfair” and defendants are often not allowed a lawyer.

He said confessions were obtained under torture.

The Gulf state has carried out around 80 executions annually since 2011.

In comparison, Iran has executed more than 1,000 people since January last year, the UN special rapporteur on Iran, Ahmed Shaheed, said on Monday.

Syrian beheaded in Saudi execution surge

A Syrian on Wednesday became the latest person to be beheaded in Saudi Arabia, where executions have surged this year.

The killing of Firas Mohammed al-Kor brought to 49 the number of death sentences carried out in 2015, compared with 87 for all of last year, according to AFP tallies.

He was put to the sword in the northwestern region of Jawf after being convicted of smuggling amphetamines, the interior ministry said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

Reasons for the surge are unclear.

Human rights group Amnesty International says Saudi Arabia has regularly been among the world's top five executioners.

Around half of the death sentences carried out this year have been for drug-related offences, London-based Amnesty said earlier his month, charging that this contradicts Saudi claims that the punishment is imposed for only the most serious crimes.

The Saudi government says it "is committed to fighting drugs of all kinds due to the physical and social harm they cause", while cabinet affirmed on Monday that the kingdom's legal system ensures "justice for all".

Human rights groups have expressed concern about the dangers of the innocent being sentenced to death.

The Gulf state has carried out around 80 executions annually since 2011, under its version of Islamic sharia law.

In comparison, Iran has executed more than 1,000 people since January last year, the UN special rapporteur on Iran, Ahmed Shaheed, said on Monday.

Saudi Arabia Beheads Murderer, Pakistani Smuggler

Saudi authorities on Tuesday beheaded a national for murder and a Pakistani for drug trafficking, the interior ministry said, amid a surge in executions in the kingdom this year.

Nader bin Mussa al-Harbi was found guilty of strangling compatriot Bandar bin Muhya al-Harbi over a dispute, the ministry said in a statement carried by the SPA state new agency. He was executed in the northern city of Hail.

Pakistani citizen Benyameen Ali Ahmed was executed in Jeddah after being convicted of smuggling drugs in his stomach, the ministry said.

The two executions bring to 53 the number of death sentences carried out in 2015, compared with 87 in all of last year, according to AFP tallies.

The ultra-conservative Gulf state has carried out around 80 executions annually since 2011, under its version of sharia law. In comparison, Iran has executed more than 1,000 people since January last year, the U.N. special rapporteur on Iran, Ahmed Shaheed, said last week.

The Saudi government says it “is committed to fighting drugs of all kinds due to the physical and social harm they cause.” The cabinet affirmed last week that the kingdom’s legal system ensures “justice for all,” but human rights groups have expressed concern about the dangers of innocent people being sentenced to death.
