Why do some states set execution dates at sentencing?

Hey it's ProDP I keep hearing on the news of Judges in some states (CT, SC, IN) setting execution dates at sentencing, why do they do this?
    Thanks,

Someone will have a fuller answer, but the Cliff Note version is that a date is needed to set in motion the appeals process.

Generally this only happens in states where death warrants issue at the trial court level and there is no mandatory direct appeal and/or PCR stage. In states which follow alternative systems the fixing of an execution date when passing sentence is (for obvious reasons) procedurally barred.
