Jonathan Daniel Renfro - Idaho Death Row

Prosecutor: Renfro could face death penalty

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - An attempted murder charge against Jonathan Renfro is expected to be amended to first degree murder early Thursday morning, following the death of Sergeant Greg Moore, the Coeur d'Alene police officer he allegedly shot on Tuesday morning. Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney Barry McHugh would not comment on the case but did tell KHQ it's possible Renfro could be looking at the death penalty. If McHugh files an intent to seek the death penalty it'll be the second time he's done so in less than a year.

If an intent to seek is filed, it'll be up to a jury when the case goes to trial if the death penalty will be enforced. According to Idaho state law there are only three crimes that would warrant the death penalty; first degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and perjury resulting in the execution of an innocent person. First a jury would have to determine if Renfro is guilty of first degree murder and then they have to determine if that murder meets a different set of criteria, known as aggravated circumstances. These aggravated circumstances range from if the crime is especially heinous to if the person who committed the crime also killed another person in that same day.

KHQ spoke with a former criminal prosecutor who said he wouldn't be surprised if the death penalty was sought in Renfro's case.

Peter Erbland said, "If in fact the officer was attempting to contact this individual, responding to a call and he was killed because he was performing those duties, then that's a statutory aggravating circumstance."

Court documents detail the events leading up to Moore being shot. He was called into a northwest Coeur d'Alene neighborhood investigating a suspicious persons call. According to a police affidavit, Renfro repeatedly admitted to shooting Moore, telling investigators he had a gun on him and knew the officer would find it.

Renfro is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on the 15th.

Renfro attorney asks for more time to prepare

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Jonathan Renfro, the man who admitted shooting Coeur d'Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore, was back in court late Thursday afternoon.

Renfro's attorney requested for more time to prepare for his next hearing. It was originally set for May 19 but his attorney has asked for an additional two weeks to prepare for the preliminary hearing, where the judge will hear all the evidence and determine if there's enough to move ahead for trial.

The motion to amend the charges has been filed by Kootenai County Prosecutor Barry McHugh, however it wasn't taken up at Thursday's appearance. The attempted murder charge will likely be upgraded to murder.

Renfro admitted to detectives he shot Moore, then stealing his patrol car and gun shortly after his arrest.

Renfro preliminary hearing set for June 10

COEUR d'ALENE - The preliminary hearing for Jonathan Renfro, accused of murdering Coeur d'Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore, has now been scheduled for June 10.

The 9 a.m. hearing will be in front of Magistrate Barry Watson and is expected to last a full day.

Prosecutors will present evidence and call witnesses to try and establish probable cause and ask Watson to move the case to 1st District Court for a trial at a later date. If the case is bumped to District Court, Renfro would then enter a plea to the charges.

Lawyers for both sides have declined to comment about the case.

Renfro, who is being held on $2 million bond, is charged with first-degree murder, two counts of felony grand theft, unlawful possession of a firearm because he has past felony convictions, and removing an officer's firearm.

Renfro, 26, of Rathdrum, is accused of shooting Moore to death on Tuesday morning in the Sunshine Meadows subdivision. Authorities say he then stole Moore's gun and patrol car.

According to police, Moore contacted Renfro on the 2800 block of West Wilbur Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Moore had been on a routine patrol, and Renfro had been walking in the neighborhood, which has recently been a target of auto burglaries.

Moore called Renfro's name into dispatch, and then dispatch lost contact with Moore. An Idaho State Police detective said in an affidavit filed in court that Renfro admitted shooting Moore with a handgun he had been concealing.

Renfro was found near a Walmart Supercenter near the Washington-Idaho state line after ditching Moore's patrol car and fleeing on foot.

Funeral held for Idaho officer shot while on patrol

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Thousands of law enforcement officers and first responders joined community members at a Coeur d’Alene high school Saturday to honor and remember fallen police Sgt. Greg Moore, who was shot and killed Tuesday while on patrol.

Court records say 26-year-old Jonathan Renfro confessed to the crime during an interview with law officers. He has been charged with first degree murder.

During services for the 43-year-old Moore at Lake City High School, his friends, family and fellow officers remembered him as a devoted and generous family man, dedicated public servant and big-hearted hard-worker with a sense of humor.

Moore died Tuesday evening after he was shot in the head early that morning while on patrol in a residential neighborhood on the city’s northwest side. He had stopped to check on a man walking down a dark street, and the man allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot Moore, then stole his patrol car and fled, according to The Spokesman Review in Spokane.

Moore not only touched the hearts of the people closest to him, he also touched the people he saw every day, said Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Lee White.

The testimony to the impact Moore’s life had on the community was evident as he lay dying in the hospital, White said. Not only did Coeur d’Alene officers line the hallway, but hundreds of doctors, orderlies and health staff did, too, he said.

White struggled with emotions has he described Moore’s approach to his job.

“There’s one truth that never fades in this business and that’s that we are our very best when times are the very worst,” he said. “We have chosen a profession in which life can be fragile.”

Moore was killed protecting the life and property of the citizens of the region, White said. And he was good at his job.

“Greg knew how to find bad guys,” White said. “It was always a challenge for the other guys to catch the bad guys quickly because they knew Sgt. More would show up, find them, and then razz them.”

Coeur d’Alene Detective Johann Schmitz, one of Moore’s closest friends, said he “didn’t view those who violated the law as enemies to be vanquished.”

“He was always fair and never held a grudge,” Schmitz said. “After 16 years, he resisted the urge to be jaded. He felt there was no one beyond saving.”

At the end of the service, a bell rang 21 times and pall bearers carried the flag-draped casket from the auditorium. A lengthy procession of law enforcement vehicles accompanied Moore’s body to his final resting place at Forest Cemetery.

Renfro to be charged with first degree murder in police shooting

First degree murder automatically qualifies Renfro for death penalty

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Jonathan Renfro, the man who allegedly killed Coeur d'Alene Police Sergeant Greg Moore, heads back to court Wednesday hoping to protect his right to a fair trial.

Several things will happen in District Court Wednesday, including Renfro's attorney asking for a gag order as both prosecutors and the public defender's office work to make sure he gets a fair trial.

Just two hours after Renfro made his first court appearance Moore passed away in a Coeur d'Alene hospital, so on Wednesday prosecutors will amend the charges against Renfro to include first degree murder. In Idaho first degree murder automatically qualifies the defendant for the death penalty. The prosecution has 60 days after Renfro enters his plea to decide if it will seek the death penalty for Moore's murder.

Also on Wednesday Renfro is expected to ask the court to issue a gag order in this case, something that would prevent any of the attorneys or law enforcement witnesses to the shooting from making public statements about the proceedings. Clearly the defense is concerned about pre-trial publicity and if you saw the outpouring of support from the community for Moore and his family it may be tough for Renfro to find an impartial jury in Kootenai County.

That gag order request could also be a signal from the defense there could be a change of venue request in the future.

The prosecution is also asking the court to hold Renfro without bond, which is currently it's set at $2 million. The defense has filed a motion arguing it's illegal to hold him without bond.

Gag order and bail decisions delayed in Sgt. Moore case

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho – Courts froze Wednesday in the case of Sgt. Greg Moore's death.

Kootenai County prosecutors said they filed a motion to upgrade confessed killer, Jonathan Renfro's charge to First-Degree murder. A gag order for officials, a motion to hold Renfro without bail and the charge for First-Degree murder were all supposed to be heard Wednesday.

However, none of these issues were resolved in the hearing.

WATCH: Admitted Sgt. Moore killer charged with first degree murder

The defense said they never received official paperwork to upgrade Renfro's charge from Attempted First-Degree murder to First-Degree murder.

Meanwhile, prosecution said they would not agree to a gag order right now, but will try to negotiate something both parties can agree on.

Sgt. Greg Moore was an officer for the Coeur d'Alene Police Department for 16 years. He was shot on May 5th, 2015 and died later that day of his injuries. According to court documents, Renfro later admitted to the killing.

The Kootenai County prosecution said they have not decided if they will seek the death penalty. All motions that were not settled have been rescheduled for the first Friday in June.

More Delays in Case of Slain Police Officer

COEUR D'ALENE (AP) - There are more delays in the case of an Idaho man who is charged in last month's fatal shooting of a Coeur d'Alene police officer.

First District Magistrate Barry Watson said Friday he will reschedule the preliminary hearing for Jonathan Daniel Renfro for July 22.

Renfro is charged in the shooting of Police Sgt. Greg Moore.

The Spokesman-Review says the judge also pushed back to June 24 a hearing on several motions in the case. He had been scheduled to hear those motions Friday.

They include the prosecution's request to add a first-degree murder charge to the list of felonies Renfro is accused of, and another asking the judge to hold the 27-year-old Renfro without bail. The defendant now is being held in the county jail on $2 million bail.

Renfro Charged With First-Degree Murder in Death of Sgt. Moore

COEUR D'ALENE, ID - Jonathan Renfro, the man accused of shooting and killing Coeur d'Alene Police Sergeant Greg Moore last month, was officially charged with first-degree murder on Wednesday.

Kootenai County Prosecutor Barry McHugh filed charges of first-degree murder, grand theft, removal of a firearm from a law enforcement officer, concealment of evidence, unlawful possession of a firearm and robbery.

On May 5, 2015 Sgt. Moore was shot while making contact with a suspicious person. Prosecutors say Renfro shot Moore, stole his car and then led police on a high speed chase that ended near Post Falls. Moore died later that day. In his interview with detectives, Renfro admitted multiple times to shooting Sgt. Moore.

Court allows Moore body cam as evidence at Renfro murder trial

    By Jeff Humphrey
    KXLY4 News

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - During his preliminary hearing Wednesday, Jonathan Renfro's defense attorneys worked to try and spare their client what could be a death sentence even though Renfro allegedly confessed to the fatal shooting of Coeur d'Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore.

There were a number of officers who rushed to Moore's aid and then successfully apprehended Renfro, but at the preliminary hearing it became apparent it was Moore himself who gathered the best evidence against his alleged killer.

The night of his killing Moore was checking on a suspicious man walking around a neighborhood when he was shot in the face. Moore had run the subject's name through dispatch and some of the last words he spoke implicated his alleged killer.

“Renfro … Robert Edward Nora Frank Robert Ocean … First Jonathan,” Moore said during his call to dispatch.

“Sgt. Moore had checked out with a suspicious individual in the Coeur d'Alene Place neighborhood and actually ran his name through his dispatch center and then there was no further contact from him,” Coeur d'Alene Police Lt. Stu Miller said.

As soon as his fellow officers learned Moore wasn't responding to dispatchers they raced to the scene, only to find the sergeant mortally wounded and his pistol and patrol car gone. One thing that was left at the scene was Moore's body cam, still attached to his chest.

In court Wednesday, Renfro's defense attorneys tried to keep that video from being admitted as evidence because they said it was irrelevant. Prosecutors, however, says it's crystal clear proof Renfro shot Moore in the face and then looted his body as he struggled to breathe.

Magistrate Barry Watson agreed with prosecutors and admitted the body cam video as evidence in Renfro's murder trial.

    The preliminary hearing continues Thursday.

Renfro referenced white supremacists in interview after arrest in shooting of CdA officer

    By Scott Maben
    The Spokesman-Review

Jonathan Daniel Renfro told police detectives he was out looking for a car to steal and “to collect money on behalf of white supremacists from Native Americans” the night he allegedly fatally shot Coeur d’Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore, according to testimony in court today.

In a 2-hour interview with investigators, Renfro at first denied shooting Moore, saying instead it was someone named Davis. But he admitted doing it when a detective informed him police had recovered Moore’s body camera footage that showed the confrontation early in the morning of May 5, testified Idaho State Police Detective Michael Van Leuven, the lead investigator in the case.

The white supremacists comment was not explained further during today’s hearing, and the transcript and video of the police interview has been sealed by court order. Any ties Renfro may have had with white supremacists has not been revealed in court proceedings.

When a detective asked Renfro why he shot Moore, the suspect replied, “Fear,” according to a transcript of the police interview that was read during Renfro’s preliminary hearing today.

Fear of what, the detectives asked him.

“Having a gun in my damn pocket,” Renfro answered, according to court testimony.

One of the investigators then asked if Renfro, who was on felony parole at the time, was afraid Moore would find the handgun.

“No, I knew he was going to find it,” Renfro said.

Moore allegedly stopped to question Renfro after seeing him, dressed in dark clothing, walking down a sidewalk in the residential neighborhood a little before 1:30 a.m.

One of the detectives also asked Renfro how Moore had treated him during the encounter. Renfro said he found Moore to be nice and respectful – a “really nice man,” according to the interview transcript read in court.

In questioning Van Leuven on the stand, Kootenai County Public Defender John Adams referred to a part of Renfro’s police interview in which his defendant was asked when he decided to pull out his gun and shoot Moore, and whether it was before Moore got out of his patrol car.

“No, I had no intention of doing it in the first place,” Renfro answered, according to the transcript.

Adams asked Van Leuven if Renfro told the detectives he shot Moore because the officer had placed his hand on his service pistol.

Van Leuven said yes, but he didn’t recall the exact words Renfro had used.

Adams also asked about Renfro giving Moore his identification, which the officer apparently used to run a check on Renfro’s record, and which later was found in the officer’s clothing at the hospital.

According to the interview transcript, Renfro told detectives, “If my intent was to shoot him, I would have shot him before I gave him my ID.”

Renfro continued in the interview, “I was feeling scared, trapped and concerned,” and that as soon as he saw Moore place a hand on his gun, “I didn’t think,” he just reacted, according to the transcript Adams referenced in court.

Adams also pressed Van Leuven to testify to the facts supporting why Moore even stopped to check out Renfro that night. The detective said the location, time of night, Renfro’s clothing and the area’s history of car burglaries were contributing factors, but Adams argued those were more in line with Van Leuven’s opinion of the reason for the stop.

The detective also noted that police had received reports of three car burglaries that night in that very neighborhood, although he couldn’t verify if Moore was aware of those crimes at the time he stopped to talk with Renfro. But Van Leuven did note that

Moore had not activated the overhead lights on his patrol car, an indication that it was a “consensual stop” to ask why someone is in a certain location at a certain time of day.

Moore was given a series of neurological tests in the Kootenai Health emergency room after he was shot, according to testimony earlier in the day.

Almost all of the exams showed him unresponsive, according to this morning’s testimony of Dr. William Ganz, a neurological surgeon called to the hospital that morning to examine Moore in the trauma room.

“He didn’t respond at all” to some of the initial tests, Ganz said, except for a few spontaneous breaths and a little gagging on his breathing tube.

Ganz, of Neurosurgery and Spine Northwest, was the first witness to take the stand in the second day of Renfro’s preliminary hearing.

Renfro, 27, is charged with first-degree murder in the early morning shooting of Moore, who was on patrol in northwest Coeur d’Alene.

Moore’s condition deteriorated through the morning at the hospital, and the officer was confirmed to be brain dead by about 2:30 p.m., Ganz testified. The doctor called Moore’s death at 3:05 p.m.

In the early hours of his treatment, Moore’s blood pressure was very low, Ganz said. The medical team gave him powerful medications to boost his blood pressure while Moore underwent a series of scans and tests to assess his injuries. Some of those tests showed bullet fragments lodged in the spine and mostly blocking one artery to the brain, Ganz said.

“There was really no treatment to be done at that point” other than to stabilize Moore and move him to the intensive care unit, he said.

Kootenai County Sheriff’s Det. Jerry Northrup took the stand next and described searches and recovery of evidence in west Post Falls where police arrested Renfro following the shooting. The evidence included Moore’s police car, which was stolen after he was shot, and two handguns and two ammunition magazines. Other evidence found near the abandoned patrol car was a flashlight, a lighter and a pair of eyeglasses, Northrup said.

One of the semiautomatic pistols was found on top of an air brake system reservoir on the underside of a semi-truck trailer parked west of the Wal-Mart store at the Point at Post Falls commercial center. It was the same trailer under which police had found and arrested Renfro earlier that morning, Northrup said.

The detective said he also found two magazine clips sitting atop structural frames under the trailer. Photos of the items and a schematic of where they were found were introduced as evidence.

Officers conducting a line search in a field near the Wal-Mart found the second gun.

Northrup also said he documented the patrol car, which was still running with its lights on and the radio turned on low, turned to an FM radio station. The car’s dash-cam video recorder was removed from the trunk, the detective said.
