Nine Killed in Shooting at Black Church in Charleston

    The New York Times

CHARLESTON, S.C. — A white gunman opened fire Wednesday night at a historic black church in downtown Charleston, S.C., killling nine people before fleeing and setting off an overnight manhunt, the police said. At a news conference with Charleston’s mayor early Thursday, the police chief, Greg Mullen, called the shooting a hate crime. “It is unfathomable that somebody in today’s society would walk into a church while they are having a prayer meeting and take their lives,” he said.

The police said the gunman walked into the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church around 9 p.m. and began shooting. Eight people died at the scene, Chief Mullen said. Two people were taken to the Medical University of South Carolina, and one of them died on the way. “Obviously, this is the worst night of my career,’’ Chief Mullen said. “This is clearly a tragedy in the city of Charleston.’’

City officials did not release information about the victims. Hospital officials declined to comment.

Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. said the city was offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman, whom the police described as a clean-shaven white man about 21 years old who was wearing a gray sweatshirt, blue jeans and Timberland boots. Chief Mullen described him as “extremely dangerous.” ”To walk into a church and shoot someone, is out of pure hatred,” the mayor said as he walked away after the news conference.

Law enforcement officers from the F.B.I.; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division; and other agencies were assisting. Chief Mullen said the police were tracking the suspect with police dogs. Around 10:45 p.m., police officers escorted a man in handcuffs who appeared to match the suspect’s description. But officials said later that they were still searching for the gunman.
As the investigation unfolded, police pushed back onlookers and reporters and photographers after receiving a bomg threat.

Helicopters with searchlights circled overhead, and a group of pastors knelt and prayed across the street. “The question is, ‘Why God?’,” a man wearing a shirt bearing the name of the Empowerment Missionary Baptist Church said during the prayer.

The church is one of the nation’s oldest black churches. The pastor, the Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney, is a state senator. It was not clear if he was at the church at the time of the shooting. The Gothic Revival church was built in 1891 and is considered a historically significant building, according to the National Park Service. The congregation was formed by black members of Charleston’s Methodist Episcopal Church who broke away “over disputed burial ground,” according to the website of the National Park Service. In 1822, one of the church’s co-founders, Denmark Vesey, tried to foment a slave rebellion in Charleston, the church’s website says. The plot was foiled by the authorities and 35 people were executed, including Mr. Vesey. The church houses the oldest black congregation south of Baltimore, the Park Service said.

Gov. Nikki R. Haley said in a statement that she and her family were praying for the victims. “While we do not yet know all of the details, we do know that we’ll never understand what motivates anyone to enter one of our places of worship and take the life of another,’’ the governor said. ”Please join us in lifting up the victims and their families with our love and prayers.”

Late Wednesday, the campaign staff of former Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida, who is seeking the Republican nomination for president, said he was canceling appearances planned for Thursday in Charleston because of the shooting.

I´m so sorry for all involved. My sympathies for the victims and their relatives and friends. I hope they get the gunmen soon.
No murder can be so cruel that there are not still useful imbeciles who do gloss over the murderer and apologize.

Who is Dylann Storm Roof? Suspect wanted in Mother Emanuel AME church shooting in Charleston

Authorities identified Dylan Storm Roof, 21, as the suspect in the shooting at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C.,Wednesday night.

Nine people were killed in the shooting at Mother Emanuel AME church Wednesday night, including the church's pastor.

Roof has been identified as being from the Columbia, and authorities were searching for him all over the Midlands area of South Carolina.

Police in Charleston described the suspect as armed and extremely dangerous. He was said to be driving a 2000 Hyundai Elantra with the South Carolina license plate number LGF330, according to the Post and Courier in Charleston.

Roof's uncle, Carson Cowles, told Reuters law enforcement officers were at Roof's mother's home Thursday. Cowles described Roof as soft spoken, and said Roof's father gave him a .45-caliber pistol for his birthday this year.

Local court records in Lexington County, S.C., show Roof was charged with drug possession in March.

In his Facebook profile picture, Roof is shown wearing a jacket with two flag patches on it. The Southern Poverty Law Center identified the flags on Twitter as those of apartheid South Africa and white-rule Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe.

Survivor says Charleston shooter spared her to ‘tell everyone’ what happened

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Dylann Roof, 21, is the suspect in Wednesday’s deadly shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina that left 9 people dead.

Police say he walked into the church and fatally shot nine people as they attended Bible study class.

Witnesses told officials Roof, who was arrested late Thursday morning, reportedly said he was at the church to shoot black people, a source told CNN.

A female survivor told family members that the gunman told her he was letting her live to tell everyone else what happened, Dot Scott, president of the local branch of the NAACP, told CNN.

Scott said she had not spoken to the survivor directly but had heard this account repeated at least a dozen times as she met with relatives of the victims Wednesday night. Scott added that she didn’t know if the survivor had ended up at the hospital or being questioned by police.

Because of the church’s historic significance, it is not unusual for visitors, whether white or black, to visit it, Scott said. She said she’d had no indication that any children were among the victims.

Mullen told the news conference the suspect had been in the church attending a meeting that was going on — and “stayed there almost an hour with the group before the actual event.”

But he declined to comment on whether the suspect had let one woman escape.

The suspect was seen leaving the church in a black four-door sedan, the flier says. “The vehicle you will see has a very distinctive front license plate,” Mullen added, but did not give further details on what made it stand out.

He appealed for the media to help in circulating the suspect’s image and for the public to be vigilant.

Police are “going through all kinds of video” and trying to identify any private or public video that may show anything useful for the investigation, Mullen said.

“No one in this community will ever forget this night and as a result of this and because of the pain and the hurt this individual has caused this entire community, the law enforcement agents are committed and we will catch this individual,” he said.

Police have not yet said what the suspect’s motivation in the attack might have been but are investigating it as a hate crime.

Charleston police public information officer Charles Francis said the victims were “killed because they were black.”

Six of those killed in Wednesday night’s attack at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church were female and three male.

The victims included the church’s pastor, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney.

A statement from the Georgia branch of the NAACP said, “There is no greater coward than a criminal who enters a house of God and slaughters innocent people engaged in the study of scripture.”

Pres. Obama says after period of mourning, country needs to talk about gun control

By CNN Wire and Tribune Media Wire

CHARLESTON, S.C. — In a news conference Thursday morning about the church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina that left nine people dead, President Barack Obama called their deaths “senseless murders.”

“Any death of this sort is a tragedy. Any shooting involving multiple victims is a tragedy,” he said. “There is something particularly heartbreaking about death happening in a place in which we seek solace, we seek peace.”

President Obama also suggested that more gun control is needed to avoid similar mass killings. Below is a portion of his comments:

Until the investigation is complete, I’m necessarily constrained about the case. But I don’t ever need to be constrained about the emotions that tragedies like this raise.

I’ve had to make statements like these too many times. Communities like this have had to endure tragedies like this too many times.

We don’t have all the facts but we know once again innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hands on a gun.

Now is the time for mourning and for healing.

But let’s be clear. At some point as a country we’ll have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass-violence is not happening in other advanced countries. It doesn’t happen in other places with this kind of frequency.

It is in our power to do something about it.

I say it recognizing the politics in this town foreclose a lot of those avenues right now, but it would be wrong for us not to acknowledge it, and at some point it’s going to be important for the American people to come to grips with it and for us to be able to shift how we think about the issue of gun violence collectively.

Dylan Storm Roof, the 21-year-old man who police say walked into a South Carolina, church and fatally shot nine people as they attended Bible study class, was arrested in Shelby, North Carolina on Thursday.

    According to WLTX
, Roof was arrested in Shelby on Thursday. Multiple sources are also reporting Roof has been arrested.

A senior law enforcement official confirmed to CNN the suspect has been taken into custody in North Carolina.

Zibbie, this has nothing to do with South Africa as it is these days.

Roof is a native South Carolinian and apparently never even went to South Africa. And whatever South African and other apartheid emblems he displayed on his apparel are from apartheid South Africa and Southern Rhodesia, not majority-rule South Africa and Zimbabwe. You can get that kind of junk easily on the internet, just as you can get Nazi paraphernalia.

Bottom line: this guy is seriously disturbed. And we all know that you're in no way related to two long-since-deposed regimes from the past. Any more than all our German members are Nazis.

Man accused of killing 9 at Charleston church feared 'blacks were taking over the world'

By Jeffrey Collins and Russ Bynum
    The Associated Press

CHARLESTON, S.C. – A former friend who had reconnected with the man accused of a shooting massacre inside a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, said Dylann Storm Roof had become an avowed racist.

Joey Meek reconnected with Roof a few weeks ago and said that while they got drunk together on vodka, Roof began complaining that “blacks were taking over the world” and that “someone needed to do something about it for the white race.”

Roof, 21, is accused of fatally shooting nine people during a Bible study at The Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston on Wednesday night, ripping out a piece of South Carolina’s civic heart and adding to the ever-growing list of America’s racial casualties.

Police captured Roof in Shelby, North Carolina, after a motorist spotted him at a traffic light on her way to work. His apprehension ended an intense, hours-long manhunt.

Roof waived extradition and was back in Charleston on Thursday night with a bond hearing pending, authorities said.

Charleston officials announced a prayer vigil for Friday evening. The city’s mayor described the shooting at the church as an act of “pure, pure concentrated evil.”

The victims included a state senator who doubled as the church’s minister, three other pastors, a regional library manager, a high school coach and speech therapist, a government administrator, a college enrollment counselor and a recent college graduate — six women and three men who felt called to open their church to all.

President Barack Obama called the tragedy yet another example of damage wreaked in America by guns.

NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks said “there is no greater coward than a criminal who enters a house of God and slaughters innocent people.” Others bemoaned the loss to a church that has served as a bastion of black power for 200 years, despite efforts by white supremacists to wipe it out.

“Of all cities, in Charleston, to have a horrible hateful person go into the church and kill people there to pray and worship with each other is something that is beyond any comprehension and is not explained,” said Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. “We are going to put our arms around that church and that church family.”

Surveillance video showed the gunman entering the church Wednesday night, and Charleston County Coroner Rae Wilson said he initially didn’t appear threatening.

“The suspect entered the group and was accepted by them, as they believed that he wanted to join them in this Bible study,” she said. Then, “he became very aggressive and violent.”

Meek called the FBI after recognizing Roof in the surveillance footage, down to the stained sweatshirt he wore while playing Xbox videogames in Meek’s home the morning of the attack.

“I didn’t THINK it was him. I KNEW it was him,” Meek told The Associated Press after being interviewed by investigators.

Meek said during their reunion a few weeks ago, Roof told him that he had used birthday money from his parents to buy a .45-calibre Glock pistol and that he had “a plan.” He didn’t say what the plan was, but Meek said it scared him enough that he took the gun out of Roof’s car and hid it in his house until the next day.

It’s not clear whether Roof had any connection to the 16 white supremacist organizations operating in South Carolina, but he appears to be a “disaffected white supremacist,” based on his Facebook page, said Richard Cohen, president of Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama.

On his Facebook page, Roof displayed the flags of defeated white-ruled regimes, posing with a Confederate flags plate on his car and wearing a jacket with stitched-on flag patches from apartheid-era South Africa and Rhodesia, which is now black-led Zimbabwe.

His previous record includes misdemeanour drug and trespassing charges.

Spilling blood inside a black church — especially “Mother Emanuel,” founded in 1816 — evoked painful memories nationwide, a reminder that black churches so often have been the targets of racist violence.

A church founder, Denmark Vesey, was hanged after trying to organize a slave revolt in 1822, and white landowners burned the church in revenge, leaving parishioners to worship underground until after the Civil War. The congregation rebuilt and grew stronger, eventually winning campaigns for voting rights and political representation.

Its lead pastor, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney — among the dead — recalled his church’s history in a 2013 sermon, saying “we don’t see ourselves as just a place where we come to worship, but as a beacon and as a bearer of the culture.”

“What the church is all about,” Pinckney said, is the “freedom to be fully what God intends us to be and have equality in the sight of God. And sometimes you got to make noise to do that. Sometimes you may have to die like Denmark Vesey to do that.”

Pinckney, 41, was a married father of two and a Democrat who spent 19 years in the South Carolina legislature after he was first elected at 23, becoming the youngest member of the House.

The other victims were Cynthia Hurd, 54; Tywanza Sanders, 26; Myra Thompson, 59; Ethel Lance, 70; Susie Jackson, 87; and the reverends DePayne Middleton Doctor, 49; Sharonda Singleton, 45; and Daniel Simmons Sr., 74.

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said the attack would be investigated as a hate crime.
