Man who kidnapped, killed girl in 1986 is sentenced to death

An Indiana man with a long history of sex crimes was sentenced to death yesterday for the 1986 kidnapping, rape and murder of a 14-year-old Chula Vista girl.

Williams, 49, was convicted by a jury in September of kidnapping Rickieann from her Oleander Avenue home sometime after 11 p.m. April 10, 1986, and raping and murdering her.

A motorist found Rickieann's body the next day on the Main Street exit ramp from Interstate 5 in the Barrio Logan neighborhood of San Diego.

Danielsen said Williams "callously abandoned her body on a darkened roadway like a piece of refuse."

Addressing Williams in the courtroom, Rickieann's father, William Blake, said, "I hope you toss and turn each night and relive what you did to Rickieann.

"You took part of my heart the night you decided to take Rickie's life," Blake said. "I know that you will answer for this, if not in this lifetime, then on judgment day. You will have to stand before an almighty God and give an account of what you did to Rickie."

Outside the courtroom, Rickieann's sister, Alicia Blake Aldrich, said that "justice has been done."

Clutching a photograph of their mother, who died of cancer in 2003, Aldrich said, "I hope to God nothing ever happens to anyone else like the pain of watching my mom and dad go through what they had to go through."

Defense attorney Steven Wadler acknowledged "the misery" Williams caused but urged the judge to reject the jury's recommendation that Williams be executed and instead impose a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Wadler said Williams' brutal upbringing should be taken into account. Witnesses testified during Williams' trial that he lived in a household where most of the adults drank from morning until night and children were beaten every day and verbally abused.

Judge Danielsen said he considered "the degradation of George Williams' childhood." However, he said, that was outweighed by the "utterly repulsive crimes of violence" he committed.

Prosecutor Jeff Dusek said Williams warranted the death penalty "for what he has done to Rickieann Blake and what he has done in his lifetime to women and children, including his daughter."

Williams has been convicted of multiple sex offenses, including molesting one of his daughters when she was 6 years old and molesting a then-13-year-old nephew. Williams was sentenced to 17 years in prison in 1986 for raping a San Diego woman and her 6-year-old daughter and was paroled in 1998. That year, he was sentenced to four years in prison and two years' probation in Indiana for molesting his nephew.

Dusek said Williams "is the poster child for the death penalty."

By law, Williams' death sentence will automatically be appealed.

Williams, an Indiana construction worker, was linked in 2003 to the killing of Rickieann Blake when the California Department of Justice matched his DNA with genetic material found on her body.

"DNA is gold," William Blake said outside the courtroom.

Blake said he "never lost hope" that Rickieann's killer would be found.

"We didn't know it was him (Williams) but we knew someone would be caught."
