Homicide Suspects In Jail After Being On The Run

MIDWEST CITY, Oklahoma - Both Jonathan Grafton and Daphne Mason are at the Midwest City jail, where they will be fingerprinted and booked.

The two, accused of killing two men in a Midwest City motel, were on the run for almost 48 hours before they were spotted outside a convenience store on West Willow Road in Enid.

The two had also been caught on tape Sunday afternoon, walking out of the nearby Walmart Super Center.

Little did the people around them know they were wanted for a double homicide in Midwest City.

"We're just fortunate that Enid Police Department was able to apprehend them without incident," Midwest City police Chief Brandon Clabes said.

Midwest City police got a tip both Mason and Grafton might be in the Enid area and the tip paid off.

Both an Enid police officer and an alert citizen spotted the two outside the convenience store. Enid police said the citizen called 911 at about the same time the officer went to approach them. The caller said the two were attempting to have someone drive them to Kansas.

Midwest City police are still looking for the murder weapon. Clabes said neither Mason nor Grafton were armed at the time of the arrest.

"We are searching for any weapons that may be associated with this crime," Clabes said.

And the crime is a brutal one.

Police said they found Sapulpa police Lt. Trey Pritchard and Grafton's dad, Jeffery Grafton, dead inside a room at the Traveler's Inn off SE 29th and Interstate 40 in Midwest City late Saturday night. Both had been shot in the head.

Court papers state the two had come down to confront Jonathan Grafton, who had stolen his father's pickup.

A housekeeper at the motel said she had screaming coming from room 238 earlier that afternoon and then saw a man and woman fitting the suspects' description getting into a brown Dodge pickup.

Surveillance cameras at the motel also place both Jonathan Grafton and Mason checking into the hotel. Police found clothing and medication belonging to Mason inside the hotel room where the bodies were found.

The stolen truck was located off Sara Road in Oklahoma City on Saturday afternoon all thanks to GPS.

And a phone belonging to Jonathan Grafton was found in the westbound lane of Interstate 40 near Interstate 44 after it appears it had been tossed out the window.

Back in March, Jonathan Grafton had made this disturbing post "murder is the only consistent answer to life's problems." And both Mason and Grafton posted being in a relationship with each other since December 2014.

Body of Slain Officer Receives Hero's Welcome Home

The body of a slain Sapulpa police officer, is at rest in his hometown.

Lieutenant Trey Pritchard was off duty when he and his cousin went to Midwest City to retrieve a stolen truck. While there Pritchard and Jeffrey Grafton were killed at a motel on Saturday.

Today his body received a sad but welcome home salute from citizens.

Trey Pritchard patrolled the streets of Sapulpa for more than 25-years. Today more than 40-law enforcement vehicles escorted his body home.

“It is surreal for us to think of the way this all happened. It a tragedy and loss not for this department, but for this community,” said Deputy Chief Mike Haefner of the Sapulpa Police Department.

Today the family of Pritchard and Grafton watched, as the bodies of the two men made their way into the funeral home.

“It makes me angry that two people died over a truck. This shouldn't be happening to anybody,” said Linda Lawson, one of the residents who lined Main Street to watch the procession. Lawson brought her 5 year old granddaughter to learn about respect.

Pritchard was life-long Sapulpa resident, a CLEET instructor and a family man.

"He took his job seriously. He loved his wife and five kids two grandchildren. He loved his community,” said Haefner.

The community loved him back, for Pritchard’s mission to fight violence, the very thing that took his life.

“What we are trying to do is to allow ourselves and his family time to time to grieve and ourselves and we will be dealing with this for quite some time.”

Pritchard’s body is now at Smith Funeral Home. An honor guard will keep watch, until his funeral.

Woman says her boyfriend shot his father and a Sapulpa police officer

Daphne Mason, 21, the girlfriend of Jonathan Grafton, 22, said he shot and killed both his father, Jeffrey Grafton, and police officer Lt. Trey Pritchard on Saturday in a room at a Midwest City motel.

Jonathan Grafton shot his father and an off-duty Sapulpa police officer after they got into a verbal and physical confrontation at a Midwest City motel, his girlfriend told police.

Sapulpa police Lt. Trey Pritchard, 46, and his cousin Jeffrey Grafton, 46, also of Sapulpa, were found dead about 10 p.m. Saturday in a room at the Travelers Inn, 6821 SE 29 in Midwest City.

Jonathan Grafton, 22, and Daphne Mason, 21, were booked into the Oklahoma County jail on Tuesday on murder complaints. They have not been charged.

Jonathan Grafton did not speak to detectives, instead asking for an attorney, Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes said.

But Mason told detectives on Monday she and Jonathan Grafton had stolen money from his father and took his pickup to Midwest City, where they rented the room. Clabes said the couple arrived at the hotel about 10 a.m., and Pritchard and Jeffrey

Grafton arrived about 1 p.m. intending to confront them about the theft.

Mason told police Jonathan Grafton let both men into the room when they knocked at the door, according to a probable cause affidavit. Clabes said surveillance video shows Jeffrey Grafton went to the room first, and Pritchard followed him when he did not return.

Mason told police Jonathan Grafton pulled a handgun from the nightstand and shot Jeffrey Grafton and Pritchard inside the room, the affidavit states. Both men had gunshot wounds to their heads, police said.

The couple fled the hotel, driving west on Interstate 40, and threw a cellphone out the window to avoid being tracked, Mason told police. She said they ditched the pickup in a Yukon neighborhood and took a taxi to Enid.

Two handguns were recovered from the stolen pickup, Clabes said.

A housekeeper at the inn told police she heard screaming coming from the room Jonathan Grafton had rented and saw a man and woman come out of the room and get into a brown Dodge pickup a short time later, according to the affidavit.

No one called police to report the disturbance. No one called to report gunfire either, Clabes said. The bodies were found about 10 p.m. in the hotel room, where the door was ajar, by an employee who was looking for the owner of Pritchard’s pickup, which was parked irregularly.

On Sunday, Enid police were alerted that Social Security cards for Mason and Jonathan Grafton were found at a Walmart, according to the probable cause affidavit. The two were arrested Monday at a convenience store in Enid and remained without bail Tuesday in the Oklahoma County jail.

Pritchard, a lifetime law officer, had been with Sapulpa police since 1996. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2011, police said. Jonathan Grafton referred to Pritchard as “Uncle Trey,” said Regina Grafton, Jeffrey Grafton’s mother.

Born in Chicago, Jeffrey Grafton was a pharmacist and University of Oklahoma graduate. He was a former Marine who served in Kuwait and Desert Storm. Survivors include his parents, three children, three siblings and three nephews he helped to raise, an obituary stated.

“He was very soft-hearted. He loved his children, all three of them very much. He tried to help Johnny as much as he could and that’s why he went after him and his truck. He said, ‘I’m not going to do anything about it and call the police because he was on probation,’ ” Regina Grafton said.

    Bodies returned

The bodies of Pritchard and Jeffrey Grafton were brought back home to Sapulpa in a procession that stretched for blocks down S Main Street, and were greeted by a crowd of onlookers including local law enforcement, friends, family and people from the area.

Dozens of patrol cars with Sapulpa police, the Creek County sheriff’s office and Oklahoma Highway Patrol brought Pritchard's and Grafton's remains to Smith Funeral Home, where an honor guard of about 20 officers greeted them. Services with military honors for Grafton are at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Judge Denies Bond To Pair Accused In Shooting Deaths At MWC Motel

    By News9.com

OKLAHOMA CITY - A judge has denied a bond request for the man and woman accused of shooting and killing two men in a Midwest City motel.
Johnny Grafton and his girlfriend, Daphne Mason, were both arraigned on Wednesday. They stand accused of the murders of Sapulpa Police Lt. Trey Pritchard and Jeffrey Grafton, Johnny’s father.

During the arraignment, Grafton stood silent. Mason was visibly distressed and had tears streaming down her face, though she too did not speak.

According to court documents released on Tuesday, Mason told police she and Johnny stole some money from his dad and didn’t want to get in trouble, so they took his truck to MWC checked into the motel.

She said a short time later Jeffrey and Pritchard knocked on the door and were let in by her boyfriend. That is when Mason said Johnny and his father got into an argument, then a fight. Mason said Johnny eventually got his gun out and shot both men.

A search warrant released on Wednesday reveals that officers found two guns inside Jeffrey Grafton's stolen truck. One gun was loaded with five unspent rounds, and the other one had four spent rounds and two live rounds.

Affidavit For Search Warrant/Search Warrant Return/Inventory

Grafton, 22, and Mason, 21, were taken into custody in Enid Monday morning. Enid Police arrested them after they were spotted sleeping outside a convenience store, according to Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes.

    The case remains under investigation.

Charges in Slayings of Father and Off-Duty Sapulpa Officer

    By Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Murder charges have been filed against a man suspected of shooting his father and an off-duty Sapulpa police officer to death in Midwest City.

The Oklahoman reports that 22-year-old Jonathan Grafton and his 22-year-old girlfriend — Daphne Mason — were both charged Friday with two counts of first-degree murder for the Aug. 15 deaths of Jeffrey Grafton and Sapulpa police Lieutenant Trey Pritchard.

Online court records do not list an attorney for either suspect. Both remain jailed without bond.

Police say Jonathan Grafton and Mason stole Jeffrey Grafton's pickup truck and drove to Midwest City where they rented a motel room. Jeffrey Grafton and Pritchard used GPS to locate the truck and went to the motel room where both were later found shot to death.

Sapulpa man sentenced in Midwest City shooting deaths of father, off-duty Sapulpa police
    lieutenant

    By Kyle Schwab
    The Oklahoman

After a murder sentencing Tuesday, the mother of one victim said she forgave the shooter, her grandson.

"It's been a hard almost two years. We've forgiven him. His daddy would have forgiven him," Regina Grafton told news reporters. "Our lives have been forever changed. Our futures have been forever changed."

Jonathan Henry Grafton, 24, of Sapulpa, was charged in the Aug. 15, 2015, shooting deaths of his father and an off-duty Sapulpa police lieutenant. After accepting a plea deal, he was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years in prison.

Jonathan Grafton initially was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Oklahoma County prosecutors alleged he fatally shot Lt. Trey Pritchard and his cousin, Jeffrey Grafton, inside a Midwest City motel room. Both men were 46 and from Sapulpa.

Last month, as part of the plea agreement, Jonathan Grafton instead pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder. Both counts were considered "felony" murder, meaning the deaths occurred while Jonathan Grafton was in the commission of a felony.

At the time of the shooting, Jonathan Grafton was on probation for a drug case out of Creek County and he was not allowed to possess a firearm. In plea paperwork, he admitted he "illegally possessed a firearm and the deaths ... occurred."

He also pleaded guilty last month to meth possession and assault and battery upon an officer. District Judge Timothy Henderson sentenced Grafton according to the plea agreement.

Jonathan Grafton's girlfriend, Daphne Alyssa Mason, now 23, of Tulsa, pleaded guilty in April 2016 to two counts of accessory to first-degree murder and one count of meth possession.

During a preliminary hearing last July, Mason testified she and Jonathan Grafton were meth addicts and had stolen money from Jeffrey Grafton.

Out of fear of getting arrested, the couple stole Jeffrey Grafton's truck and left Sapulpa, ultimately renting a room at the Midwest City motel, she testified. The victims found the pickup by using its GPS tracking device, police reported.

Mason testified that when the victims arrived at the motel a physical altercation occurred between Jonathan and Jeffrey Grafton. At one point during the confrontation, Jonathan Grafton grabbed his gun out of a night stand, Mason said. She testified Jonathan and Jeffrey Grafton struggled over the gun before the father was shot.

She testified she then ran into the bathroom and heard three more shots.

Defense attorneys contended Jeffrey Grafton was shot accidentally during the struggle over the gun. Defense attorneys also said Jonathan Grafton was acting in self-defense when he shot Pritchard because Pritchard pointed a gun toward the couple.

After the shooting, Mason and Jonathan Grafton fled the area in the stolen truck but they were arrested Aug. 17 in Enid, police reported.

As part of a plea deal, Mason was sentenced to five years in prison followed by five years' probation.

Jeffrey Grafton was a pharmacist and former Marine, according to an obituary.

Regina Grafton said she spoke with her grandson after the sentencing. She said, "He was sorry for what happened
