Michael D. Mosley Sentenced to 2 Life Terms Plus 40 Years in 2019 TN Double Murder

Tennessee man wanted in bar stabbings that killed 2, including 49ers QB's brother, arrested

    Fox News

The Tennessee man who was wanted in the deadly stabbings of the brother of San Francisco 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard and another man was arrested Wednesday after a manhunt, police announced.

“Accused double murderer Michael D. Mosley just arrested in Cheatham County,” Metropolitan Nashville Police Department tweeted, adding that he will be booked on two counts of criminal homicide and one count of attempted criminal homicide for Saturday morning's stabbing of three men, two of which were deadly.

Mosley, 23, surrendered from a vacant home in Cheatham County, about an hour from Nashville, after law enforcement, including the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), the Metro Nashville Police Department’s SWAT team and the U.S. Marshals' Fugitive Task Force surrounded the property, investigators added.

Mosley, whom officials added to the TBI’s Most Wanted list Tuesday, allegedly stabbed and killed Clayton Beathard, 22, and Paul Trapeni III, 21, inside a Nashville bar on Saturday, investigators said.

A third victim, who was not identified, suffered injuries to his eye and arm, the Tennessean reported. Clayton Beathard is the brother of 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard.

Police were still investigating exactly what led up to the altercation, but said it appeared to be about an “unwanted” advance made “by a man toward a woman in the bar.”

C.J. Beathard, 26, returned to the Nashville area to support his family and missed Saturday night's game against the Los Angeles Rams.

The Beathard brothers are the grandsons of Hall of Fame NFL executive Bobby Beathard and sons of country music songwriter Casey Beathard and Susan Beathard.

Mosley’s criminal history reportedly included aggravated assault, attempted aggravated burglary and drug-related arrests going back to 2014.

At the time the stabbings took place, Mosley was out on a $5,000 bond while facing an assault charge for allegedly punching a woman at a Walmart in 2018, according to the newspaper.

Stabbing suspect in double murder sentenced to prison in other case

    By Nick Beres
    News Channel 5

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — It was a triple stabbing that left two dead just before Christmas.

Michael Mosley is charged with double murder in the high-profile case that finally goes to trial next month. He claims self-defense, but now we've learned Mosley was just convicted in another case involving a brutal attack — one that highlights a very violent history.

The evidence in that trial revealed more about Mosley just weeks before he stands trial for the double murder.

Mosley is accused of stabbing Paul Trapeni III and Clay Beathard to death and injuring A.J. Bethurum outside the Dogwood Bar in Nashville in December of 2019.

Prosecutors say the attack was entirely unjustified.

"There is absolutely nothing that Clay Beathard, Paul Trapeni and A.J. did to bring this on themselves," said assistant District Attorney Jan Norman at a hearing last year.

In a letter to NewsChannel 5, Mosley wrote he acted in self-defense and, "I feel as though I've already been convicted by the way I was portrayed."

He'll get his day in court.

But Mosley did just have one in another case.

The key evidence at a trial last month was a dramatic security video showing him go after a woman with whom he knew and had a grievance — in a Nashville Walmart.

After stalking her, he attacks, knocking Mollie Baker to the floor, beating her and police say stabbing her in the eye with a key.

"Somebody just hit me in the eye so I lost my sight. I was covering and he started throwing me and kicking me," said Baker last year.

At trial, Mosley was convicted of criminal attempt to commit aggravated assault.

At sentencing, the judge expressed concern over jailhouse phone calls played by the prosecution of Mosley saying:

"... yeah, like how are you going to tell me I criminally attempted to commit aggravated assault when I didn't attempt to do nothing.

I did what I did, it's on video.

    I beat this b----- up."

The judge sentenced Mosley to 12 years in prison.

The court also took note that Mosley now has seven prior felony convictions from theft to robbery to assault.

And it's a good bet prosecutors will try to include that violent history as part of the case against Mosely at the double murder trial.

The key evidence in that double murder trial will also be surveillance video that shows much of what happened that night outside the Dogwood Bar.

That trail is set to begin the second week in November.

Nashville stabbing suspect says he offered to plead guilty to lesser charge, but prosecutors rejected it

    By Nick Beres
    News Channel 5

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A triple stabbing left two young men dead and one seriously injured outside a popular Nashville bar just before Christmas. A suspect was taken into custody. The question: Was it self-defense?

Nearly two years later, the suspect — Michael Mosley — was set to go to trial Monday, but now a last-second delay.

There is a potential issue regarding Mosley and his lawyer. Mosley also made an offer to plead guilty — an offer that was promptly rejected by prosecutors.

There will be no plea deal.

They are moving forward with the case on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder for what happened outside the Dogwood Bar in Nashville.

    But, the trial is delayed.

The 25-year-old Mosley is accused of stabbing Paul Trapeni III and Clay Beathard to death and injuring A.J. Bethurum outside the Dogwood Bar just four days before Christmas, 2019.

The story made national headlines as Beathard's brother, C.J., is an NFL quarterback.

Metro police say it all started with a dispute inside a bar — possibly over a woman — and then continued out front.

A jury will decide if it was murder or self-defense.

"There is absolutely nothing that Clay Beathard, Paul Trapeni and A.J. did to bring this on themselves," said assistant District Attorney Jan Norman at a hearing last year.

Prosecutors says Mosley started the fight and ended it with a triple stabbing.

The incident was caught on security video, which will be the key piece of evidence at trial.

Justin Johnson — who initially represented Mosley, but is not longer on the case — reviewed the video.

He says it will prove Mosley was protecting himself from three much larger men.

"A person has a right to defend themselves if in danger of serious injury or death," said Johnson last year.

Even so, Mosley has now offered to plead guilty.

In a recent letter to NewsChannel 5, he wrote that he "offered the DAs a settlement on the homicide case for voluntary manslaughter."

He added he did so "out of sympathy for the victims' families... not to endure the pain of a trial."

Prosecutors promptly rejected the offer, instead seeking first-degree murder convictions and a lengthy sentence.

"In every case, there was at least some discussions, but some are so horrendous we put our effort into incapacitating an individual as long as possible," said District Attorney Glenn Funk.

If convicted, Mosley faces life in prison.

He is already serving 12 years for a crime that very well could come up at his murder trial.

Mosley was recently convicted of an aggravated assault. The dramatic video shows him going after a woman — whom he knew and had a grievance with — in a Nashville Walmart.

After stalking her, Mosley attacks, knocking the woman to the floor — beating her, and police say stabbing her in the eye with a key.

If Mosley's attorney decides to argue his client is not violent and was simply defending himself at the Dogwood Bar, then that attack video could become an exhibit at the murder trial.

The original trial date, which was scheduled for this week, is now reset for January of next year.

One reason appears to be that Mosley is not satisfied with his current lawyer, who replaced Justin Johnson his first attorney.

That issue still needs to be resolved.

Trial for Midtown bar triple stabbing suspect set for Monday

    The trial was previously postponed

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A high-profile trial involving a triple stabbing that left two dead outside a Nashville bar is set to begin Monday March 27.

Michael Mosley is accused of killing two young men outside the Dogwood Bar four days before Christmas in 2019.

The families of the victims have been waiting for justice for more than two years and many trial delays.

Mosley offered to plead guilty, but prosecutors rejected the offer and are instead seeking first degree murder convictions and a lengthy sentence. Mosley’s attorneys have previously stated he acted in self-defense.

He's accused of killing Paul Trapeni the Third and Clayton Beathard outside Dogwood. AJ Bethurum was also stabbed. Prosecutors said Mosley started a fight with the three men which ended with the stabbing outside of the bar. The incident was caught on security video which will be a key piece of evidence during the trial.

Following the stabbing, Mosley was arrested in Cheatham County after a days-long search. In a letter to NewsChannel 5, Mosley wrote he "offered the DA's a settlement on the homicide case for voluntary manslaughter." He added he did so "out of sympathy for the victims' families ... not to endure the pain of a trial."

Mosley is already facing 12 years behind bars for another stabbing that happened at a Nashville Walmart.

Opening statements concluded in trial for deadly 2019 stabbing outside Midtown bar

    By Emily West, Caroline Sutton
    News Channel 5

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Opening statements are over in the trial for Michael Mosley, who is accused of killing two and injuring another in a stabbing outside a Midtown bar.

Mosley is facing two counts of criminal homicide and one count of attempted criminal homicide.

Metro police said an argument over a woman inside The Dogwood Bar led to a fight outside the establishment on Division Street days before Christmas 2019. Mosley is accused of stabbing Paul Trapeni III, Clayton Beathard and AJ Bethurum. Trapeni and Beathard were taken to the hospital, where they later died.

The group was out together as classmates, who had recently graduated from Battle Ground Academy in Williamson County.

Mosley's attorneys have previously said he acted in self-defense. Mosley said he offered to plead guilty to a lesser charge, but the prosecution rejected the deal.

The jury was selected from a pool of Davidson County residents on Monday morning. Judge Angelita Dalton is presiding over the trial.

Last October, Mosley was sentenced to 12 years in prison for a 2018 assault at a Nashville Walmart.

Court will resume Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.

    OPENING ARGUMENTS

Davidson County Assistant District Attorney Jan Norman addressed the jury about the video they will see of the fight under question outside the Dogwood Bar, which left two dead and one injured.

"Clay swings at Mr. Mosley and Mosley swings back," ADA Jan Norman said. "Clay is not going after him. You will see Paul walking toward them because Clay has been swung at. And you'll see Clay Beathard as he is standing there are clearly words being said. You will see AJ. He is a thin person, and it's imposing in any way. You can see clearly that Mr. Mosley gets up and take a stance where he readying himself. You will see him as he aims at Clay Beathard and stabs him in the chest — directly in the chest. Mr. Mosley knows he was armed with a knife, and Clay Beathard didn't know. You will see him collapse on the sidewalk and fall to the ground."

Norman said at the moment Beathard was stabbed that Trapeni walked away because he was stabbed in the middle of his chest and left side.

"You can see the blood before he walks across the street," Norman said. "You'll see him bend over and collapse on the sidewalk. You will see Mosley calmly walk away after fixing his air, leaving Clay and Paul to bleed to death on the sidewalk — knowing what he has done to them. He will calmly walk away."

Norman said the two bled to death, and the jury will hear from at least eight witnesses who saw the fight.

"This was supposed to be a fistfight," Norman said. "It was pushing. It was shoving. There was nothing about this that this one person knew. Mosley was armed with a knife and he stabbed them in the heart, in the chest. You're going to hear from a lot of witnesses and see video. He had that moment where he steadied himself and lunged when he stabbed him. You'll see that moment where he stabbed Paul knowing that he has just stabbed Clay in the chest. You'll see him lunge after him not once, but twice. AJ will tell you about being stabbed in the eye, and he hardly has any vision in that eye."

Defense attorney Ken Quillen said Mosley was baited into hitting on one of the group's friends.

He said a guy with a white button downed shirt and comes out with Mosley in a chokehold.

"The whole crowd goes to the left, which is crazy," Quillen said. "It's hard to believe."

Quillen went through the time stamps of the video — not yet displayed to the jury.

"This is the wee hours of a Saturday morning. The news reports two people are deceased. Mosley hires an attorney. Christmas Day — the police sends a SWAT team to get Mosley. The rest of the group was interviewed in the BGA library."

Michael Mosley found guilty on all counts in deadly Midtown stabbing trial

    By Sebastian Posey
    WKRN News

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A jury has found Michael Mosley guilty on all counts in the 2019 stabbing of three people outside of the Dogwood bar over the Christmas holiday break, which claimed the lives of 22-year-old Clayton Beathard, and 21-year-old Paul Trapeni, and left A.J. Bethurum with serious injuries.

    Charges

    • First Degree Murder (Count 1): Guilty
    • First Degree Murder (Count 2): Guilty
    • Attempted First Degree Murder (Count 3): Guilty
    • Assault (Count 4): Guilty

Mosley sentencing is set for May 23.

Friends and family members of the victims did not want to speak after the verdict, but prosecutor, Jan Norman, says this was a case of justice being served.

“This is 100% Michael Mosley. Michael Mosley did this, this all happened because of him. There’s not one thing a single one of those victims did to bring this to them. Everything they did was what you would do as a human being, you see your friend in trouble you try to help them. He’s the one who did this, he brought this anger and violence to them.”

Metro police said the stabbing started over a woman Mosley was flirting with and her group of friends were attacked after trying to protect her.

The trial began on Monday and was an emotional experience for the victims’ families. Jury selection lasted much of the day before opening statements, which were relatively brief. The prosecution painted a picture of friends reuniting over the holiday and how it turned fatal at the hands of Mosley in a matter of seconds.

The defense has said Mosley acted in self-defense.

Never-before seen video and images were shown Tuesday in the double homicide case as day two of the trial for Mosley was packed with compelling testimony and evidence.

A photo captured the BGA graduates who were home from college meeting up before heading out to Dogwood on December 21st, 2019.

Emma Yoder was first to testify, painting a picture of how well-loved the victims were. She said Beathard was never known to carry a weapon or start a fight.

The lead detective later showed a disturbing cell phone video of Trapeni after he was stabbed, covered In blood as he walked away before collapsing on the sidewalk. It was difficult video for everyone to watch.

New surveillance footage detailing what unfolded inside the bar was also played as Yoder was approached several times by Mosley.

Investigators said the fatal fight was sparked after Mosley made numerous advances towards her.

Bethurum, the only survivor of the three stabbing victims, gave his testimony on Thursday.

Michael Mosley sentenced to 2 life sentences plus 40 years

    by: Brittney Baird

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The 25-year-old man convicted of stabbing two young men to death and critically injuring a third outside a bar in Midtown Nashville was sentenced to serve two consecutive life sentences plus 40 additional years in prison.

A jury found Michael Mosley guilty on all counts, including murder, on March 31, 2022. He stabbed and killed 22-year-old Clayton Beathard and 21-year-old Paul Trapeni after a fight over a woman in 2019.

A.J. Bethurum, the only survivor of the three stabbing victims, gave his testimony during the trial.

On Wednesday, Mosley was sentenced to two life sentences in prison to be served consecutively for the first-degree murders of Bethard and Trapeni and between three and 40 years for attempted first-degree murder of Bethurum, to be served at 85%, and felony assault of a fourth man injured in the brawl.

His sentencing was determined by the court as he was classified a “career offender” with an extensive criminal history.

Friends and family members of the victims did not want to speak after the verdict, but prosecutor Jan Norman said this was a case of justice being served.

The defense claimed Mosley acted in self-defense.

Never-before seen video and images were shown in the double homicide case. A photo captured the BGA graduates who were home from college meeting up before heading out to Dogwood on Dec. 21, 2019.

Surveillance footage detailing what unfolded inside the bar was also played as the woman was approached several times by Mosley.

Investigators said the fatal fight was sparked after Mosley made numerous advances toward the woman.

During Mosley’s sentencing in late June, he apologized to the victims’ families.

“First and foremost, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry your family, friends lost their lives because of my actions, and I’m sorry for the pain you went through as a result,” said Mosley.

Clayton Beathard’s father, Casey, looked Mosley in the eyes during his impact statement and cried, “Michael, I talked to your family and I know it. I know the Lord loves you and don’t you forget it.”

Casey said his words are from God, although they go against everything in him as a father and a husband.

“I know your life has been hard here, man, and that stinks, it sucks. I know it. God, just give him a chance, give him a chance please,” he pleaded.

The heartbroken father said he is grateful for what God is doing in this tragedy, that there are no coincidences but rather opportunities.

He shared his family’s prayer in closing, “Wouldn’t it be awesome if Clay and Michael could become great friends in heaven and that’s our prayer.”

Mosley is currently housed in the Metro jail awaiting transfer to a permanent facility with the Tennessee Department of Correction.
