Woman arrested in Dallas dentist murder case

    By Walt Zwirko
    WFFA News

Dallas police have arrested a 22-year-old woman who, detectives say, has admitted to her involvement in the Wednesday night murder of Dr. Kendra Hatcher.

The suspect, identified in a police statement as Crystal Cortes of Dallas, is charged with capital murder and is being held on $500,000 bond. (The suspect's last name is spelled "Cortez" in police documents, but a family member told WFAA her legal surname is spelled "Cortes.")

Police said Cortes has provided information that indicated other suspects were involved in the slaying in the secure parking garage of an Uptown Dallas apartment building.

According to a police affidavit, Cortes borrowed a 1996 Jeep Cherokee from a friend. The defendant told detectives that she "conspired with an unnamed individual for $500" to use that vehicle to drive an unknown male suspect to the parking garage at 1700 Cedar Springs Road on Wednesday night with the intention of robbing Hatcher.

Security footage released by police showed a 1996 Jeep Cherokee being driven by a woman in the garage at the time of the homicide.

Police said a witness provided information that led them to Cortes, and that she "voluntarily" went to police headquarters and admitted to her role in the crime.

Police have not released information about any additional suspects being sought in the Kendra Hatcher murder case.

Dallas police: Ex of slain dentist's boyfriend linked to her slaying in Uptown garage

    By Naomi Martin
    The Dallas Morning Star

Uptown dentist Kendra Hatcher’s death may be linked to a plot cooked up by her boyfriend’s ex, according to police documents obtained Tuesday.

During the weekend, police searched the home of a woman who dated Hatcher’s boyfriend for two years. That apartment is fewer than two miles away from the Gables Park 17, where Hatcher was ambushed the evening of Sept. 2.

Investigators took a laptop with them out of the apartment. The woman has not been charged with any crime.

Police said in the documents that the alleged getaway driver, Crystal Cortes, 23, implicated the woman after she was arrested. She told detectives that the ex-girlfriend conspired with her to rob Hatcher, and agreed to pay her $500 in exchange for Hatcher’s driver’s license, the affidavit says.

Cortes said the woman had previously dated Hatcher’s current love interest for two years, according to the police records. The relationship ended earlier in the year.

Another man had loaned the ex-girlfriend his 1996 Jeep Cherokee from another man. That man called police after seeing the Jeep on the news. The woman told police that she let Cortes borrow her friend’s Jeep.

Police believe Cortes sneaked in the apartment complex’s garage in the 1700 block of Cedar Springs Road by piggybacking behind someone else who had opened the secured gates.

Cortes told detectives that the ex-girlfriend had an iPhone that they used to track the Hatcher’s location prior to killing her, according to the affidavit. But police did not state that they recovered the iPhone.

Police also took some documents out of Hatcher’s apartment. But it’s unclear what is in them from the police record. The alleged shooter, who remains unidentified, may have entered Hatcher’s white Toyota Camry before killing her, police said.

Investigators found a .40-caliber bullet casing inside the car. Officers also swabbed for possible DNA.

Cortes is still the only person charged formally in the case. She remains in Dallas County jail, in lieu of $500,000 bail, charged with capital murder.

Suspected shooter arrested in murder of dentist in Uptown

By Josh Davis and David Goins
    WFAA News

DALLAS – Dallas police announced Friday night they have arrested the man suspected of fatally shooting Dr. Kendra Hatcher in the garage of her Uptown apartment complex last month.

They also have issued an arrest warrant for the woman suspected of planning the crime.

Police arrested 31-year-old Kristopher Love on a charge of capital murder, Dallas police spokesman Max Geron said. When Love was arrested, he had the suspected murder weapon in the case in his possession, police said. Love, a former felon, was also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Love admitted his role in the crime to police. He is being held on $2.5 million bond.

A capital murder arrest warrant has also been issued for Brenda Delgado, 33, a woman who used to date the boyfriend of Hatcher. Police said Delgado was involved in the planning and the commission of the murder.

Maj. Geron encouraged Delgado to turn herself into authorities and said she is a fugitive at this time.

Dr. Kendra Hatcher was murdered on Sept. 2 in the parking lot of the Gables Park 17 high-rise at 1700 Cedar Springs Road.

Delgado was questioned by police in early September as authorities investigated the case, but she was released. She was mentioned numerous times in search warrants related to the case obtained by News 8 after the arrest of Crystal Cortes, who police believe drove the alleged shooter to the Gables apartment complex.

Cortes remains in jail at this time, also charged with capital murder.

Suspect in Uptown murder faces additional federal charge

    By Marjorie Owens
    WFAA News

DALLAS — The man who allegedly fired the fatal shot that killed a woman in the garage of her Uptown Dallas apartment complex previously served time at a Tennessee prison on an aggravated robbery conviction.

Kristopher Ledell Love, 31, served time in Shelby County, Tennessee after a jury sentenced him to eight years on the conviction in 2005, read a statement from U.S. Attorney John R. Parker.

In addition to the capital murder charge in the Kendra Hatcher case, Love also faces a federal firearm charge.

Authorities say upon his arrest, police found a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber pistol under the front seat of the vehicle he was driving.

"Love is a person prohibited from possessing a firearm because of his 2005 felony conviction in Shelby County, Tennessee," read Parker's statement.

On Sept. 2, Love was charged with capital murder in the death of Kendra Hatcher, a local dentist.

According to Parker's statement, Love, referenced as "Kris" LNU, hid in the backseat of a Jeep Cherokee driven by Crystal Cortes, who was paid to drive the vehicle as part of a plan to rob Hatcher.

Authorities say Cortes parked the Cherokee near Hatcher's car and Love got out. and fired the fatal shot that killed the dentist.

"The driver heard a gunshot," read the U.S. Attorney's statement. "'Kris' LNU returned to the vehicle a short time later with two purses in his hand."

After the shooting, Love was dropped off at an intersection in Dallas, authorities say.

Investigators say the driver originally referenced Love as "Kris" LNU, who they later identified and located on Oct. 1 in Dallas.

Alleged mastermind behind dentist murder indicted; is in Mexico

    By Rebecca Lopez
    WFAA News

The alleged mastermind behind the murder of Dr. Kendra Hatcher in Dallas has been indicted by a state grand jury.

Brenda Delgado, who used to date the boyfriend of Hatcher, is believed to have hired a hitman and convinced her friend, Crystal Cortes, to participate in the crime.

Dr. Hatcher was murdered on Sept. 2 in the parking lot of the Gables Park 17 high-rise at 1700 Cedar Springs Road.

Delgado is currently in Mexico, where sources close to the investigation told News 8 she is a citizen. Delgado has dual citizenship and was in the U.S. legally. She is a permanent U.S. resident who was born in Mexico.

The first step toward an arrest of Delgado was Thursday’s indictment. Since Delgado is a Mexican citizen, American authorities would need the cooperation of the Mexican government to retrieve her.

Dallas Police have known of Delgado’s whereabouts for weeks and have been working with authorities to extradite her. Extradition to the U.S. could not happen without an indictment.

Hatcher’s alleged shooter, 31-year-old Kristopher Love, has admitted to the crime, according to affidavits. Love was indicted Thursday on a federal charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Cortes, who was also charged with capital murder, remains in jail.

Delgado was questioned by police in early September as authorities investigated the case, but she was released. She was mentioned numerous times in search warrants related to the case obtained by News 8 after the arrest of Cortes.

Grand jury indicts alleged shooter in dentist murder

The man who allegedly fired the shot that killed a Dallas dentist in the parking garage of an Uptown apartment building has been indicted by a Dallas County grand jury.

Kristopher Ledell Love, 31, was indicted on a capital murder charge Friday. Love is accused of killing Dr. Kendra Hatcher on Sept. 2 at the Gables Park 17 apartment complex garage.

Love hid in the back seat of a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Crystal Cortes, who was paid to drive the SUV as part of a plan to rob Hatcher, according to U.S. Attorney John R. Parker. He allegedly got out of the car and shot Hatcher in the head.

The plot was allegedly devised by Brenda Delgado, who is still in Mexico while authorities work to extradite her to the United States. Delgado, who used to date the boyfriend of Hatcher, was indicted by a state grand jury in October.

In addition to the capital murder charge in the Hatcher case, Love also faces a federal firearm charge.

Authorities said upon his arrest, police found a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber pistol under the front seat of the vehicle he was driving.

He was prohibited from carrying a gun after a 2005 conviction of felony aggravated robbery in Tennessee.

FBI to add Brenda Delgado to Most Wanted Fugitives list

    By Rebecca Lopez
    WFAA News

DALLAS -- The FBI will announce it's adding Brenda Delgado to its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list.

Officials will hold a news conference Wednesday to make the announcement. Delgado is wanted for the murder of Dr. Kendra Hatcher, who was murdered on September 2 in the parking garage of her Uptown apartment building.

Police have arrested two other people in the case. Crystal Cortes, who police say drove the get away car, is already in jail. The alleged gunman, Kristopher Love, was also arrested.

Dallas police say Delgado was the mastermind behind the plot to kill Dr. Hatcher; the motive supposedly involved Hatcher's boyfriend at the time of her murder, who was Delgado's ex-boyfriend.

Dr. Hatcher was dating Delgado's ex-boyfriend, and police say she was jealous, so she hired a hit man and convinced Cortes to help her.

In Dallas last November, we asked the Mexican Consul General Sergio Hayakawa why Delgado had not been arrested.

"I don't know why she hasn't been arrested. I don't know if they know exactly where she is at," he said.

Dallas police questioned Delgado within days of the shooting, and even arrested her on outstanding traffic warrants.

The get-away car driver, Cortes, implicated her, but Dallas police let Delgado go, saying they didn't have enough evidence to charge her in the case. They also did not keep her under surveillance.

Multiple sources tell WFAA they believe Delgado fled to Mexico, where she has family.

Cortes' brother met with Dallas police homicide detectives and recorded part of the conversation. The detective is heard on the recording telling the Cortes family they can easily pick up Delgado.

"We know where she is," the detective says. "We can arrest her when it's time."

But weeks later, Delgado is still on the run.

The FBI is now in charge of the case and working with Mexican authorities to bring her in.

"Between Mexico and U.S. we have a lot of international cooperation in these cases," Consul General Hayakawa said.

The Mexican Consulate tells WFAA there is an Interpol warrant for Delgado, so it's up to U.S. federal authorities working with Mexican police to arrest her. But returning her to Dallas may not be easy.

It's complicated by the fact that Delgado was born in Mexico and is a naturalized U.S. citizen, which means Mexico considers her a citizen and won't extradite her unless there is an agreement in place saying prosecutors won't seek the death penalty.

Hayakawa says,"Because our constitution doesn't have the capital murder or death penalty, our government asks for the U.S. government put in writing that they are not looking for the death penalty," Hayakawa said.

Alleged Uptown Dentist Murder Mastermind In Custody

MEXICO CITY (CBSDFW.COM) – The alleged mastermind behind Uptown dentist Kendra Hatcher’s murder — Brenda Delgado — was captured in Mexico.

Mexican authorities searched areas where Delgado has friends and family in the states of San Luis Potosí, Nuevo León and Mexico City. The Attorney General’s Office said Friday she was detained in a house in the city of Torreón, in northern Coahuila state.

Delgado was then taken to the Santa Marta Acatitla prison in Mexico City pending extradition proceedings. Part of that extradition agreement between the United States and Mexico will take the death penalty off the table for Delgado. Dallas County District Attorney Susan Hawk has said Delgado will however, face life in prison.

Kendra Hatcher’s brother, Neil Hatcher said he was notified of Delgado’s arrest and was “tickled pink” by the news.

The FBI added Brenda Delgado to its “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” this week on April 6, 2016. The 33-year-old is the person investigators believe orchestrated the 2015 murder-for-hire of Hatcher.

“The FBI is extremely appreciative of our law enforcement partners in Mexico, as well as our local, state, and federal partners, for their tremendous cooperation and collaboration in the capture of Top Ten Fugitive Brenda Delgado,” said Thomas M. Class, Sr., Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Dallas Field Office.

Hatcher was shot and killed after getting out of her vehicle in the parking garage at the Gables Park 17 high-rise apartment building. FBI officials say it was Dallas Police Department investigators who soon suspected Delgado of hiring two co-conspirators to carry out her plan. The man accused of actually gunning down Hatcher, Kristopher Love, is in custody and faces federal charges. The woman accused of driving Love to the parking garage to murder Hatcher, Crystal Cortes, is also in custody.

Thomas M. Class, Sr., Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Dallas Field Office said, “Brenda Delgado was able to effectively manipulate everyone she involved in her calculated scheme. Although she didn’t pull the trigger herself, she is still responsible for the murder.”

Officials say Delgado plotted the murder because she was jealous Hatcher, 35, was dating her ex-boyfriend and had recently been introduced to his parents. The now Most Wanted fugitive initially spoke with investigators about the murder, but officials say she fled the country when it became clear she was a person of interest in the murder case.

A grand jury indicted Delgado for Capital Murder back in October. A federal arrest warrant for Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution was issued soon after. The indictment said Delgado promised to give Kristopher Love drugs and money, from herself and a drug cartel, to kill the dentist.

Delgado lived in North Texas but is a Mexican citizen. She was born Brenda Berenice Delgado Reynaga, on June 18, 1982. She is the 506th person and the ninth woman to be placed on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list.

Alleged mastermind of dentist murder returns to DFW

DALLAS -- The woman suspected to be behind a murder-for-hire plot that killed a local dentist was extradited back to Texas on Thursday.

Brenda Delgado, who has been on the run since last September, arrived at the Dallas County Jail late Thursday evening, where she will stay until her trial.

Her bond was listed at $1 million Thursday night.

Photos released by Mexican authorities show her in the custody of law enforcement there before being flown to North Texas.

Delgado is accused of hiring a gunman to murder her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend, Dr. Kendra Hatcher, in an Uptown apartment parking garage last year.

Afterwards, police say she fled to Mexico. Delgado is a citizen of Mexico and a naturalized U.S. citizen.

"The truth is, she realized she is facing a potential death sentence in a country that is not her home country, and she did not have a lawyer and didn't have means to defend herself, so she went to her home country,” said Delgado’s attorney, George Milner.

Dallas police say she’s been hiding to avoid prosecution for her role in the murder.

On Sept. 2, 2015, Hatcher, a pediatric dentist, was shot dead. Police say Kristopher Love was hired by Delgado to murder Hatcher and they say Delgado got her friend, Chrystal Cortes, to drive the getaway car.

Police say Delgado was jealous the victim was dating her former boyfriend.

“That is certainly a fact that is not in my favor — that there is a connection between her and Dr. Hatcher — but that doesn't mean my client conspired with anyone to kill her,” Milner said.

Delgado was charged with murder and a world-wide warrant was issued for her arrest. The FBI put her on the 10 Most Wanted list, which has included terrorists like Osama Bin Laden in the past.

Sources say authorities knew where Delgado was when she was added to that most wanted list, and Delgado’s attorney says he had already negotiated her surrender at that point.

"If everyone had done it the way I wanted to do it — which was to have her voluntarily walk across the bridge in Laredo, Texas, in March — she would have been back six months ago at much less government expense,” Milner said.

Delgado was arrested in April 2016 in Mexico. The country does not have a death penalty, so her extradition agreement includes language that says she will not face execution, if convicted.

Delgado's attorney, George Milner, says his client is expected to be on a flight to Dallas Thursday, but didn't say what time.

The suspected gunman, Kristopher Love, and the alleged getaway driver, Chrystal Cortes, have both been charged for their alleged roles in the murder.
