Police identify suspect charged with killing a mother and her 1-year-old child

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Darrell Gerard Taylor, 34, has been charged with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of attempted first degree murder, and one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Police have charged him for reportedly killing a mother and her one-year-old and seriously wounding her three-year-old.

Taylor is also charged with attempting to murder another woman. Her relation to the victims is unknown at this time.

Wilmington Police believe the violent attack happened before 6:30 a.m. Sunday in the Greentree apartment complex.

Officers were first called to the scene in the 4700 block of Greentree Road because of a reported assault.

When they got to the scene, officers said they saw a man outside one of the apartment units. He reportedly had his hands behind his back. Officers ordered him to show his hands and that is when they say he tossed a gun down.

Officers were able to take the suspect into custody.

The mother, a 30-year-old woman, and her one-year-old child were found dead in a car. Her three-year-old was also found inside the vehicle with serious injuries.

Another woman, who was also seriously injured, was outside the car.

The three-year-old and the injured woman were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Wilmington Police were on the scene Sunday gathering information.

Taylor is scheduled to be in court on Monday.

Man used machete during assault when girlfriend, 20-month-old daughter killed

    Star News Online

WILMINGTON -- Prosecutors said a Wilmington man killed his girlfriend and her 20-month-old daughter and used a machete to injure the woman's 3-year-old son and a bystander Sunday morning.

Darrell Gerard Taylor, 34, of Wilmington made his first appearance Monday in New Hanover County Superior Court, where he was appointed an attorney from the capital defender's office. Taylor is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and a charge of robbery with a dangerous weapon in the 6:30 a.m. attacks on Greentree Road in north Wilmington

Yawanda Felicia Doe, 35, was killed, and Michelle Dukes, 46, was injured. Doe's 20-month-old daughter, whose name was not released, also died at the scene. Doe's 3-year-old son was injured and taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. New Hanover County vital records show Doe and Taylor have a 20-month-old daughter and a 3-year-old son. Officials did not release the children's names.

Taylor was arrested Sunday morning after Wilmington Police Department officers responded to an assault call in the 4700 block of Greentree Road.

When officers arrived, Taylor was found armed with a gun in the parking lot, according to WPD spokeswoman Linda Rawley. After Taylor was detained, officers located the injured and deceased in, and nearby, a vehicle.

During the brief hearing Monday, New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David said Taylor used a machete to attack Dukes, steal her car keys and attack the 3-year-old, "causing serious bodily injury that was serious enough to cause death.”

Taylor, who showed no emotion during the hearing, is being held without bail.

Afterward, David and his staff met with Doe family members who sat in on the court proceeding.

"It’s a large loving family and I know they are hurting right now and they’re relying on each other," he said. "They came today seeking justice and we’re going to do everything to make sure that they get it."

He said he anticipates more charges forthcoming, "based on the facts of the case." Autopsies were being performed Monday on the victims, he said, to determine exactly what weapon was used in their deaths.

"Whether or not a machete was used in the other two murders cases, and whether or not a gun was involved in those murders, that's the subject of the examination right now," he said.

“This is a case I know a number of people in the community have grave concerns about and are very saddened by, and as parents ourselves our hearts go out to them. The best thing we can do is our job right now,” he said.

Across social media sites many were mourning the death of Doe and her daughter. Doe's employer, Kids & Company, a child-care center on College Road, posted a lengthy message Sunday on its Facebookpage informing clients of her death. The post was shared more than 200 times with dozens of people commenting.

"She was a loving mother, dedicated teacher and mentor and a wonderful friend to many. We are heartbroken by this tragedy and she and her daughter will be greatly missed," the Kids & Company post reads.

Kids & Company did not respond to a request for comment.

David said that in the coming weeks he'll assemble a panel to review if the case should proceed capitally.

"Given the nature of the case and that there are multiple victims it is death penalty eligible as a matter of law,” he said.

Taylor, who also was born in Wilmington, has several felony and misdemeanor convictions dating to 1997 for possession of controlled substance, resisting arrest, assault on a female, burglary and fighting, N.C. Department of Correction records show.

Most recently, police records show, he was arrested in March on a charge of possession of marijuana and resisting arrest.

'It's a crazy man,' 911 caller says after machete attack

WILMINGTON -- Emergency calls released Monday, a day after a mother and her 20-month-old daughter were slain and two others -- including her 3-year-old son -- were critically injured, reveal the horrors the victims and law enforcement were confronted with on that rainy Sunday morning.

Darrell Gerard Taylor, 34, of Wilmington, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon. The mother of his children, YaWanda Felicia Doe, 35, and her infant daughter were pronounced dead at the scene, the Greentree Apartment Complex off North Kerr Avenue. Doe's 3-year-old son and bystander Michelle Dukes, 47, were injured.

Taylor is being held in the New Hanover County jail without bail.

    'It's a crazy man'

Wilmington police learned something was amiss when Dukes' frantic daughter called 911 at 6:32 a.m. as she drove her mother to the hospital.

"It's a crazy man in Greentree," she says in the 911 recording. "I was on the way to taking my mom to work and he just sliced her neck with a knife."

The caller said her mother was checking the oil in the car when a man appeared and demanded the car keys. As soon as her mother threw the man the keys, he came up to her and cut her with a "big old saw,” the daughter reported. Prosecutors said Monday the weapon used in the attack on Dukes and the boy was a machete.

"The man just came out of nowhere and he walked up to me on my side of the car and said, 'Give me the keys' and (my mom) seen him before I did and she threw her keys ... and he ran up to her and just sliced her and she fell," the daughter said.

The man ran and the women rushed into the car and headed for the hospital, the caller said.

"Her neck is sliced open. Her whole neck is sliced open," the daughter said as she arrived at NHRMC Orthopedic Hospital, formerly Cape Fear Memorial Hospital, with her injured mother.

Police radio traffic reveals that as officers arrived in the apartment complex parking lot at 6:46 a.m. they spotted a man matching the caller's description standing in the parking lot.

Within three minutes, the man, later identified as Taylor, was detained and police were in custody of a gun he had, the dispatch logs state.

At 6:50 a.m., an officer radioed for paramedics after discovering "kids stabbed in the back seat” of a car. Police towed a Silver Acura from the scene.

By 6:57 a.m., the third person -- believed to be Doe -- was found, though the logs aren't clear on where Doe's body was discovered.

Doe's son was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. A hospital official said Dukes was in good condition Monday afternoon. The official said the hospital had no record of the boy.

New Hanover County vital records show Doe and Taylor have a 20-month-old daughter and a 3-year-old son. Officials did not release the children's names.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David announced Wednesday his office would be seeking the death penalty for a man accused of using a machete to kill a mother and her 1-year-old child and seriously injuring two others.

“A group of combined prosecutors have looked at the facts of this case met with investigators and of course looked at applicable law to include The Constitution and state law. In review of all the facts of all the facts in this case, it is the state’s intention to seek the death penalty against Darrell Taylor,” David said.

David said capital murder cases are considered very carefully, after the investigation is near completion.

“This is something we look into with great deliberation, fully involving some of the best legal minds in my office certainly and we only do this after carefully reviewing all the facts, looking at aggravating and mitigating circumstances and meeting with the investigators, family and letting them know about the road ahead,” David added.

Police were called to the Greentree apartment complex in reference to a reported assault. The attack was believed to have happened before 6:30 a.m.

Taylor is accused of killing Yawanda Felecia Doe and her child, who was a 1-year-old at the time. Taylor is also accused of seriously injuring Doe’s other child, who was a 3-year-old at the time, and another woman during the assault.

Doe and her 1-year-old child were found dead in a car and her 3-year-old was found with serious injuries.

Another woman, who was also seriously injured in the attack, was discovered outside the car.
