Colorado Springs, Colo. • At least three police officers have been injured in an ongoing active shooter situation at or near a Colorado Springs branch of Planned Parenthood on Friday afternoon.

Lt. Catherine Buckley, a Colorado Springs police spokeswoman, said she was still trying to confirm other details in the fluid situation.

"We still have a gunman that is out there," she said.

A Colorado Springs police commander told The Gazette that at least three officers have been hurt. It is unclear whether there are more injuries or fatalities.

The city's fire department tweeted about the situation about 11:45 a.m. The branch is located at 3480 Centennial Blvd., just north of West Fillmore Street.

"The area is NOT secure," police said in a tweet.

"We were looking out the window and we had an officer wave us back inside," said Brigitte Wolfe, who works Jun Japanese Restaurant next door. "They have everything blocked off."

Wolfe said there are roughly a dozen police vehicles at the scene. She said officers have guns drawn and are facing the Planned Parenthood branch.

A photo from the scene showed officers in the area hiding behind their vehicles with their weapons drawn. SWAT officers have been called to the scene.

Colorado Springs police have shut down Centennial Boulevard between Garden of the Gods Road and Fillmore Street. Some businesses in the area are being evacuated. Patrons and workers at a nearby shopping center have been told to shelter in place.

An employee who answered the phone at a nearby King Soopers said a few dozen customers were locked inside under police's orders, but she had not seen a shooter or any other first-hand violence across the parking lot from the Planned Parenthood building.

"Everybody here is safe," she said, declining to give her name. "That's all I know, but I'm in the back right now."

This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.

Update: Active shooter reported at Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs

An active shooter situation is in progress at a large shopping center that contains the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic. At least three policemen and an unknown number of civilians have been injured after a gunman opened fire.

The gunman shot multiple people, including a police officer, then barricaded himself inside Planned Parenthood, according to Mike Violette, the executive director for the Colorado Fraternal Order of Police.

At least three officers have been injured, and police are unsure if any civilians have been hit, Commander Kirk Wilson of Colorado Springs PD told reporters. Police do not know if there have been any fatalities.

One person is reported dead in the parking lot, according to the police scanner.

The gunman is firing at passing cars, KRDO reported.

Two of the injured officers have been moved to safety, while police are still trying to move the third out of harm’s way, KXRM’s Kody Fisher reported.

An officer said on his radio that he was trying to “get a look at” the gunman, when the back window of his police cruiser was shot out, the CS Gazette reported.

The injured police officer was shot in the hand, and a second officer has been injured, law enforcement told KKTV.

The gunman is a white male who is about 6 feet tall with a white beard wearing a hunting outfit, boots and a tan hat, a witness told police, according to the scanner traffic.

“We can’t confirm where the shooter is,” Lieutenant Catherine Buckley, the Colorado Springs PD public information officer, told reporters during a briefing. “We do not know whether he is contained or not. We cannot verify.”

Officers and detectives have been deployed into businesses in the area, and there is still the possibility of hostages, Buckley added.

At least three of the victims are being brought to Penrose-St. Francis Hospital, while an unknown number of people will be treated at Memorial Hospital, KKTV reported. The conditions of the transportees have not been announced.

Law enforcement on the scene must also battle the elements with snow starting to accumulate on top of police vehicles. It is currently 17 degrees Fahrenheit (-8 degrees Celsius).

Colorado Springs Police Department has issued a shelter-in-place order for the shopping center.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are on the scene, as the agency has an office in Colorado Springs. The closest FBI office is in Denver.

Sigh...I wonder if the after effects of James Holmes getting LWOP instead of the DP is lingering. Plus we haven't executed Nathan Dunlap at this point despite exhausting all appeals. This only reinforces my support of the DP.

If there are any deaths and if one lawman is killed, those penny pinching folks in El Paso county need to be willing to have a DP case. My sister and I are still amazed no one from El Paso County has received the DP since that's a conservative county.

Update: An University of Colorado-Colorado Springs officer was killed and now seeing that one civilian is dead as well. Looks like death row will have some new additions down the road.

At least two dead after gunman opens fire at Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs; five police officers shot, 11 people hospitalized

By David Goroff and Sasha Goldstein
New York Daily News

Two people were killed and a gunman is in custody after he opened fire and shot at least five police officers and several other civilians at a Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs, authorities say.

Among the dead was a University of Colorado police officer, KUSA-TV reported.

There is a "huge crime scene that has to be processed," the city's mayor, John Suthers, told reporters. The Friday incident began around noon and didn't end with the suspect in cuffs into approximately 5 p.m. local time.

Officers had not spoken to the suspect, but he had been shooting at officers with a long gun during an hours-long standoff at the facility, Lt. Catherine Buckley, a Colorado Springs spokeswoman, said.

As 5 p.m. rolled around, officers were able to breach the building and end the threat.

“We got officers inside building and they were able to shout to the suspect and make contact with him and at that point, they were able to get him to surrender and take him into custody," Buckley said shortly after the arrest was made.

The unidentified man also brought packages with him to the building which police said will have to be "checked out" in the event they are explosives of some sort. A sweep of the facility is underway.

At least 11 people have been taken to local hospitals, among them five police officers. The exact extent of the victim's injuries has not be released and there may be more people inside the clinic, cops said.

The original shooting call from a Planned Parenthood location around noon local time on Friday. A witness said she heard approximately 20 shots in less than five minutes and saw an officer fall. Some of the victims were shot at the clinic before escaping to a nearby bank, Buckley told reporters.

One man said his sister called him from the facility, fearing she'd be gunned down as the madman opened fire.

"She was telling me to take care of her babies because she could get killed," Joan Motolinia said of the frantic phone call, during which he said he heard several gunshots. "People were shooting for sure. I heard someone shooting. There was a lot of gunfire. She was calm, she was trying to hide from those people."

The gunman shot out the back window of a police car as an officer attempted to "get a look at him," according to the Colorado Springs Gazette.

The suspect is using a "long gun," authorities said.

He wore a long coat with a "hunting-type" hat, according to a dispatcher, the paper reported. The suspect is a bearded white man, authorities said.

One local Fox reporter tweeted pictures of armed officers surrounding a King Soopers supermarket, less than a half-mile away, which was locked down. Approximately 20 customers were standing inside the store. Other stores and businesses in the area were locked down as police swarmed the area.

"It's not usually a busy day for us, and no one is panicking or anything," said Mike Pelosi, who works at Soopers. "But they haven't told us anything except that we're not allowed to go outside."

Officers warned patients and staff at a Veterans Affairs clinic across the road to stay away from windows, the Gazette reported.

"The area is NOT secure," Colorado Springs Police said.

People in a nearby shopping center were also told to stay put, cops said.

"At this time, our concern is for the safety of our patients, staff and law enforcement," Vicki Cowart, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, said in a statement.

The Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains office is next to a building that houses medical offices.

President Obama has been briefed about the shooting and Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton wrote a tweet supportive of Planned Parenthood, saying "Today and every day, we #StandWithPP."

Colorado Springs is about 70 miles south of Denver, Colo.

The NYPD said in a statement that the department has sent Critical Response Vehicles to Planned Parenthood locations throughout the city.

"There are currently NO specific threats to any New York City locations at this time," police said.

Planned Parenthood has been politically targeted during the last year after a series of controversial videos from an anti-abortion group depicted Planned Parenthood officials talking callously about the policy of taking money to cover the costs of donating aborted fetuses for medical uses.

The Republican-run Congress has considered slashing Planned Parenthood's federal funds over GOP outrage about the group's practice of giving tissue from aborted fetuses for scientific research.

It’s unclear if the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood was specifically targeted, the group said in a statement.

"We don't yet know the full circumstances and motives behind this criminal action, and we don't yet know if Planned Parenthood was in fact the target of this attack," the statement said. "We share the concerns of many Americans that extremists are creating a poisonous environment that feeds domestic terrorism in this country. We will never back away from providing care in a safe, supportive environment that millions of people rely on and trust."

Other locations around the country have been targeted by arsonists. In late September, someone lit a fire at a clinic in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Another facility in Pullman, Wash., was lit on fire early Sept. 4.

FBI warned of Planned Parenthood attacks months ago

Late Friday, the New York City Police Department announced it was sending critical response vehicles to Planned Parenthood clinics throughout the city as a precaution after the Colorado Springs attack.

The FBI warned of attacks on clinics two months ago, as CBS News' Jeff Pegues reports.

For several months now, law enforcement has been concerned about people targeting reproductive health facilities -- specifically Planned Parenthood locations across the country.

As CBS News first reported in September, an FBI intelligence bulletin went out to law enforcement agencies nationwide with that warning. It came as Congress was debating Planned Parenthood funding and on the heels of the release of a series of videos by Center for Medical Progress that purported to show Planned Parenthood doctors discussing the harvesting of fetal tissue from abortions.

The intelligence bulletin warned of "lone offenders using tactics of arsons and threats all of which are typical of the pro-life extremist movement."

At that time there had already been nine criminal or suspicious incidents in seven states and the District of Columbia.

In one incident in August, someone poured gasoline on a New Orleans Planned Parenthood security guard's car and set the vehicle on fire. According to the FBI, there was another incident in July in Aurora, Colorado in which someone poured gasoline around the entrance of a Planned Parenthood facility, also causing a fire.

Robert Lewis Dear: Facts You Need to Know

Robert Lewis Dear, 57, has been identified as the suspect in the shooting at a Planned Parenthood medical center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, police have confirmed.

Three people, including a police officer were killed in the shooting and nine others, including five police officers, were injured. It began just before noon on Friday, while the clinic was open and in operation. The suspect was taken into custody five hours later, just before 5 p.m.

University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Police Officer Garrett Swasey, 44, has been identified as one of the victims killed in the shooting.

Not much is known about the accused shooter so far. Police said it is too early to speculate about a motive.

Here’s what you need to know about Dear and the shooting:

He Is Originally From South Carolina & Was Charged With Animal Cruelty in 2002

Robert Lewis Dear, the suspected gunman, is from Hartsel, Colorado. According to KDVR-TV, he was previously a resident of North Carolina and is originally from South Carolina.

Dear’s age has been reported to as both 57 and 59, but public records indicate that he is 57. His family is from South Carolina, according to public records and his father’s obituary.

According to court records, Dear has an arrest record in both North and South Carolina. He has been convicted of several traffic offenses, but has been arrested several times on more serious charges.

His convictions include seat belt violations, driver’s license violations, operating a vehicle in an unsafe mechanical condition and driving a non-registered vehicle.

Dear was charged in Colleton, South Carolina, with two counts of cruelty to animals in 2002, but was found not guilty in a bench trial.

He was also charged in 2002 in Colleton with charges of “peeping Tom” and eavesdropping. Those charges were dismissed.

The Suspect Brought ‘Devices’ to the Scene, Police Say

Police said the suspect brought possible devices, including propane tanks, to the scene.

Investigators had to wait several hours for the scene to be secure, but said Saturday morning that the items are “no longer a threat.”

He Was Reported to Have a ‘Long Gun’

Dispatchers said the gunman was wearing a long coat and a hunting-type hat, the Colorado Springs Gazette reports.

Police said the gunman is believed to have used a long gun.

The gunman walked into the Planned Parenthood and began shooting, KKTV reports.

According to the Colorado Springs Gazette,
a witness saw the gunman shoot someone near the front door of the Planned Parenthood and then followed him through the parking lot and inside. The witness told the newspaper the gunman “unleashed a barrage of gunfire,” after shattering the glass front doors of the building.

“We don’t have any information on this individual’s mentality, or his ideas or ideology,” Colorado Springs Police Lt. Catherine Buckley said.

Dear reportedly told the cops "no more baby killers". I guess fed charges are coming and possible the fed death penalty. I hope his case(s) does not get tied up in the courts for years.

Source: Colorado suspect spoke of 'baby parts'

Motive still unclear, official says

By Ben Bloomfield and Pamela Brown
CNN News

(CNN) - What moved a man to kill three people and wound nine others at a Planned Parenthood in Colorado has not been disclosed. But the suspect accused of carrying out the shooting spree, Robert Lewis Dear, made remarks about "baby parts" to investigators after his surrender, a law enforcement official told CNN.

Dear, 57, told them he has anti-abortion and anti-government views, but that doesn't mean those opinions were his motive for allegedly shooting up the Colorado Springs clinic on Friday, the official said. It's too early to tell, as investigators are still processing evidence.

After a nearly six-hour bloody standoff that left one police officer dead and five others wounded, the accused shooter dropped his gun after a SWAT team drove up an armored police vehicle, a BearCat, and cornered him, the official said.

Law enforcement officers found propane tanks in the area of Dear's car in the parking lot and believe he was trying to shoot them to cause an explosion, the official said.

'Crime against women'

In the absence of an announced motive, public officials in Colorado and beyond are drawing their own conclusions about the attack.

It was a "crime against women receiving health care services," said Attorney General Loretta Lynch. She pledged the full resources of her office to investigate.

"Inferences (could be made) from where it took place," Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers told the Denver Post.

Vicki Cowart, president of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, went beyond an inference, saying the shooter "was motivated by opposition to safe and legal abortion."

A hermit's shanty

Dear is being held without bail in a Colorado Springs jail, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. He is due to appear in court Monday afternoon.

Shown in police photos with dark hair and a fluffy white beard, the suspect appears to have lived a long time in rural solitude in the Carolinas, then more recently in Colorado. Over a decade ago, he had some run-ins with the law while living in South Carolina, but was never convicted.

In 1997, Dear's wife accused him of domestic assault, although no charges were pressed, according to records from the Colleton County Sheriff's Office in South Carolina.

In 2002, Dear was charged with being a peeping tom; those counts were dismissed.

In 2003, he was arrested and charged with two counts of animal cruelty, but he was found not guilty in a bench trial.

He later made his home in a hermit shanty in the mountains of North Carolina, CNN affiliate WLOS reported. It published a photo of a small, basic cabin in the woods of Buncombe County.

The sheriff's office there knew Dear from a single a civil citation issued in 2014 for allowing his dogs to run wild.

Anti-Obama brochures

About a year ago, Dear chose the crossroads community of Hartsel, Colorado, as his home, according to public records. It is nestled in grassy plains and rolling foothills framed by Rocky Mountain ranges and is about an hour and 20 minutes' drive from Colorado Springs.

Dear bought a spread -- 65 miles west of the Planned Parenthood clinic -- for $6,000.

Zigmond Post, a neighbor, said Dear brought him some anti-Obama pamphlets once. "That's about all I've run into him," he said.

It's safe to say that few people knew who Dear was until he walked out of the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood after allegedly shooting 12 people and terrorizing many others.

Scanners relay police plans

Conversations captured over the police scanner gave glimpses into the drama inside the clinic as well as the strategic debate about how to stop the suspect and get his hostages to safety at the same time.

Joan Motolinia's sister was among those inside. She called him Friday afternoon, and he could hear the shooting in the background, he said.

"She couldn't say much because she was afraid," Motolinia said, shedding tears as he recounted the call.

Beloved officer killed

Officer Garrett Swasey died along with two civilian victims in the hail of bullets. He was an elder in his church and a former figure skating artist.

Swasey was a University of Colorado Colorado Springs officer who rushed to the clinic to offer his assistance. "There was no way any of us could have kept him here," said UCCS Police Chief Brian McPike. "He was always willing to go...he had an enthusiasm that was hard to quell."

Colorado Springs Police Chief Peter Carey said that the identities of the other two victims probably won't be released until Monday, after autopsies have been performed.

Obama: 'Enough is enough'

In a statement on Saturday, President Barack Obama offered praise for Swasey, condolences to the families of the victims and condemnation of the attack as another example of gun violence.

"This is not normal. We can't let it become normal," Obama said. "If we truly care about this -- if we're going to offer up our thoughts and prayers again, for God knows how many times, with a truly clean conscience -- then we have to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them.

"Period. Enough is enough."

Planned Parenthood videos

Planned Parenthood has recently endured intense political and social opposition.

Eight undercover videos released over the summer by anti-abortion activists have stirred caustic criticism against the reproductive health clinic. It has even filled the halls of Capitol Hill, where conservative politicians have demanded its defunding.

Planned Parenthood has said the videos, which alleged illegal fetal organ sales, were heavily edited and inaccurate.

At least three of the organization's buildings have been vandalized since September, not long after the last video appeared.

Colorado Planned Parenthood shooting victims named by family members

The two civilian victims of the Colorado Planned Parenthood shooting were named by family members, local media reported on Sunday.

Authorities in Colorado Springs have said they will not formally identify the man and woman until Monday, when autopsies are complete.

The woman who died was identified as Jennifer Markovsky, a Hawaii-born resident of Colorado Springs. The man who was killed was named as Ke’Arre Stewart.

The third person killed was University of Colorado–Colorado Springs police officer Garrett Swasey, a 44-year-old father of two who responded to the scene after shooting began at 11.38am on Friday. Nine people were wounded in the attack; all are expected to recover.

A suspect, Robert Lewis Dear, is in police custody. Reports – unconfirmed by official sources – have said the 57-year-old told officers interviewing him “no more baby parts”, a presumed reference to recent uproar over the alleged discussion of the sale of fetal tissue by Planned Parenthood staff.

Though no motive was officially confirmed, on Sunday Planned Parenthood used Twitter to say: “We now know the man responsible for the tragic shooting at PP’s health center in CO was motivated by opposition to safe and legal abortion.”

Police said Dear would appear in court on Monday, at 1.30pm local time. A statement issued on Sunday said: “The warrants with regard to this investigation have been sealed.

“Information regarding the timeline of events, motive of suspect and type of weapon used are part of the active investigation and are unable to be released at this time.”

The Denver Post reported
that Markovsky was 36 and a mother of two children. Stewart, the newspaper said, was 29 and a father of two. An army veteran, he had served one tour in Iraq.

Hawaii News Now reported
that Markovsky’s family said she had been at the clinic supporting a friend, who was shot in the hand.

“The family is grieving. We’re all shocked,” the website quoted one of Markovsky’s relatives as saying.

Markovsky’s father, John Ah-King, wrote on Facebook: “To my daughter Jennifer I’m going to miss so much, I lost you in a senseless shooting in Colorado Springs, Planned Parenthood.

“Life was too short my beloved daughter, I was waiting to see you soon, I’m going to miss you, my memories of you will live on in my heart and mind! Missing you!!!”

In Colorado, kktv.com reported the identification of Stewart.

“Stewart’s wife said he leaves behind his children, whose lives will now never be the same,” the report said.

Also on Sunday, Officer Swasey’s family released a statement in which they said: “Our loss cannot be expressed in words.

“While the nation now knows Garrett as a hero who gave his life for others,” the statement continued, “he was also a devoted husband of 17 years and a wonderful father to his two children. His greatest joys were his family, his church, and his profession.”

Swasey moved to Colorado in the 1980s, to pursue competitive figure skating. On Sunday the Olympic silver medallist Nancy Kerrigan said he had been “one of my best friends” while they were growing up together in Melrose, Massachusetts.

"There are some people who just do not deserve to live,"

- Rowan Atkinson
