2016 Presidential Candidates on the Death Penalty

    Presidential Candidates on the DP

    Democrats

Hillary Clinton Supports Federal Use of Death Penalty.

Clinton last publicly discussed her view on capital punishment during her 2000 race for the U.S Senate. At that time she stated that the death penalty had her “unenthusiastic support”.

Bernie Sanders Opposes the Death Penalty

BERNIE SANDERS: Let me just give you an answer that I suspect not everybody will agree with. I’m against capital punishment in general. I understand, and certainly for people who are mentally incapacitated, who don’t know what they’re doing or even what’s happening to them. I think people have been executed who really were not even aware of what was going on and that’s not something that a civilized nation should be engaged in. But in general this is what I think. Look, there are people who commit horrendous, horrendous, horrendous crimes. We all know that and we are furious at them and can’t understand their barbarity. But I think with so much violence in this world today, I just don’t think the state itself whether it’s state government or the federal government should be in the business of killing people. So when you have people who have done terrible terrible things they’re going to spend the rest of their lives in jail and that’s a pretty harsh punishment. But I’m against capital punishment.

Ted Cruz Supports the Death Penalty

“I spent a number of years in law enforcement dealing with some of the worst criminals, child rapists and murderers, people who’ve committed unspeakable acts. I believe the death penalty is recognition of the preciousness of human life, that for the most egregious crimes, the ultimate punishment should apply.”

John Kasich Supports the Death Penalty.

12 Executions have been carried out while he has been the Governor of Ohio

JOHN KASICH: No I don’t agree with that Chuck. Look, we’re just looking for the drugs we need to administer it. And in this debate sometimes we forget the victims. Listen, I review all these cases. Some people I have said we will let them stay for a life in prison if I wasn’t certain of who did what but I’ve had these grieving families come to see me Chuck. People who’ve had their mothers who have been gunned down and look it’s about justice. It isn’t about revenge it’s about justice. And I support the death penalty and will continue to do that because a lot of times families want closure when they see justice done. We’re in a tricky situation here because of the lack of drugs. But no I think you administer it sparingly but frankly at the end of the day when it comes to me, everybody’s had a look at these cases and I get the final say and I try to…I don’t try to, I remember the victims when I consider this.

Donald Trump Supports the Death Penalty

Well it’s the death penalty. We have people who are, these two animals shot the cops and these were two wonderful young cops and you know you don’t see rioting when the cops get shot. You don’t see anything. There won’t be protests, there won’t be anything. You won’t even hear about it in two days. It will be old news and that will be it, except for their families and their friends it will be forgotten. The death penalty. It should be brought back and it should be brought back strong.

Now these two people are just gunned down by these two thugs, and I will say thugs, and they should get the death penalty absolutely. And you know what, I don’t know they say it’s not a deterrent well you know what maybe it’s not a deterrent but these two will not do anymore killing that’s for sure.

"There is a point in the history of a society when it becomes so pathologically soft and tender that among other things it sides even with those who harm it, criminals, and does this quite seriously and honestly. Punishing somehow seems unfair to it, and it is certain that imagining ‘punishment’ and ‘being supposed to punish’ hurts it, arouses fear in it." Friedrich Nietzsche

"I realize this may sound harsh, but as a father and former lawman, I really don't care if it's by lethal injection, by the electric chair, firing squad, hanging, the guillotine or being fed to the lions."
    - Oklahoma Rep. Mike Christian

"There are some people who just do not deserve to live,"
    - Rev. Richard Hawke

“There are lots of extremely smug and self-satisfied people in what would be deemed lower down in society, who also deserve to be pulled up. In a proper free society, you should be allowed to make jokes about absolutely anything.”
    - Rowan Atkinson
