Iran executes 17 prisoners for heinous crimes

Tehran, May 26 : As many as 17 prisoners were executed in Iran in the past two days for crimes including murder, rape and drugs trafficking, the Iran Human Rights (IHR) website reported on Wednesday.

The prisoners were put to death in two different prisons in Karaj, bringing to almost 60 the number of people put to death in different Iranian prisons this month, IHR said.

Iran: 17 Prisoners Executed in Alborz Province

In addition to the previous posting:

Iran Human Rights (MAY 25 2016): According to Iran Human Rights (IHR) sources, 17 prisoners were executed in two different prisons in the city of Karaj (west of Tehran) on May 24 and 25.

IHR had previously reported about the scheduled execution of two groups of prisoners in Karaj. Six prisoners were transferred on Sunday May 22 from Karaj Central Prison and at least eight were transferred from Rajai Shahr on Tuesday May 24 in preparation for their execution.

According to close sources, the six prisoners from Karaj Central Prison were hanged in Gehzelhesar Prison (also in Karaj) on the morning of Tuesday May 24. All the prisoners were charged with drug offenses.

Sources have also reported about the execution of 11 prisoners in Karaj's Rajai Shahr Prison early morning May 25. Ten of the prisoners were charged with murder and one was sentenced to death for rape. One of the prisoners, identified as "Mehdi Rajaei", was reportedly under the age of 18 at the time of the alleged offense. IHR is currently investigating to find more details regarding whether Mehdi Rajai was a minor offender.

IHR strongly condemns the new wave of executions in Iranian prisons. About 60 people have been executed in Iranian prisons since the beginning of May 2016. Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the spokesperson for IHR, said: "Despite the alarming rate of executions, the international community has not shown any reaction yet. We urge the UN, EU and all countries with diplomatic relations with Iran to condemn these executions and call for an immediate moratorium on the death penalty in Iran".

    Iran Hangs Serial Rapists

Iran hanged a 21-year-old man on Sunday after convicting him of the rape of dozens of women in the historic southern city of Shiraz, the judiciary said.

The convict, identified only as Amin D., earned notoriety as the “Vaseline Man” in Iranian media for his greasing of his body in the pre-dawn attacks on women in their homes that sowed terror in the city of some 1.5 million people.

“The man was arrested in August 2015 with CCTV footage provided by one of the victims, DNA and blood type match and other evidence left on the scene,” Shiraz prosecutor Ali Salehi told the Mizan Online website. “He was sentenced to death for corruption on earth and creating widespread insecurity in Shiraz through breaking into the houses of a large number of citizens at night and sexually assaulting and raping women.”

Fars province police chief Ahmad Goudarzai said last year that the suspect was only identified after he left his trousers at the scene of one attack with a dry cleaning tag. The police then narrowed their search to 15,000 people with the same family name. Eventually they used DNA samples to identify and arrest the suspect.

Police said the man was arrested once two years before for stealing a mobile phone, but the female victim had felt too embarrassed to report the sexual assault and he was released shortly afterwards.

Amin D. was hanged together with a second man who had been convicted of raping and murdering a woman, Mizan Online said.

Two Afghan Citizens Hanged In Iran- Lawyer Conducted The Executions

Iran Human Rights (JUN 6 2016): A lawyer reportedly has carried out executions in one of Tehran's prisons. According to the state-run Iranian news agency Fars, two Afghan citizens were hanged in a prison in Tehran. The prisoners were reportedly convicted of several cases of rape and robbery. The names of the prisoners, the date of their executions, or the exact location of the executions were not revealed in the report, which was published on Sunday June 5.

A lawyer for one of the complainants reportedly carried out the executions. The lawyer, who was not identified by name, told Fars News Agency: "On the request of one of the complainants, I personally caried out the punishments." This is despite that the prisoners were reportedly charged with rape and not murder.

According to Iranian laws, families of murder victims may carry out the execution of the murderer. Iran may be the only country where the execution of rape victims could be carried out by the lawyer of a complainant.

Iran Human Rights (IHR) condemns the executions. "It is outrageous that lawyers are carrying out executions. Iran's leaders are responsible for promoting a culture of death penalty in Iran," says Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the spokesperson for IHR.

Go Iran. At least the nation has the strength to carry out its sentences. The minute Amnesty International gets involved you know you're on the right track.
