Travon Harmon Ruled Incompetent for Trial in 2016 AL Double Murder

Suspect arrested for Fort Mitchell shooting

The Russell County Coroner tells News Leader 9 that two people are dead and one person injured following a shooting Tuesday morning.

Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor said that 19-year-old Travon Harmon has been arrested in this crime. During a press conference on Tuesday, Taylor said arrested at the home and has confessed to being the shooter.

The shooting happened on Bradley Rd. near Horseshoe Rd. in Fort Mitchell around 4 a.m.

The victims are 76-year-old Leroy Harmon and 26-year-old Bionka Harmon; the deceased are Travon's grandfather and sister. A third person, Devonte Howard was shot, and is in critical condition after being shot in the head. The gun used was a .38-caliber handgun.

"We are dealing with a person who killed his sister and his grandfather, it's certainly a case where you say ‘what was the guy thinking, what was he on, what is going on in his mind,’" Taylor said.

Investigators say Harmon's gruesome shooting spree began when he got into a fight with his childhood friend Howard. Taylor says Harmon grabbed Howard's gun and shot him in the head.

"He was confronted by his grandfather, which is Mr. Leroy Harmon and at that time, we believe the evidence will show he shot Mr. Harmon in the head, and at that point his sister came at him who is Ms. Bianca Harmon and at that time he shot her in the head," stated Taylor.

Investigators believe the Harmon called 911 after the shootings. A deputy arrived in four minutes and stopped the teen as he was walking out the door.

"We believe he was probably going to leave the scene, but we got there fast enough,” Taylor said. “He stayed and did not give us any trouble."

Taylor says Harmon's grandmother was at home, but not injured in the shooting. He says in a split second, she witnessed the murder of her husband and granddaughter allegedly at the hands of her own grandson.

"We were with her all night and she has returned home to be with her family, she is doing as well as can be expected," Taylor said.

Harmon remains behind bars at the Russell County Sheriff's Office on no bond. He will have his first court appearance sometime this week, and the case could be presented to a grand jury in February.

Taylor said Harmon is not in school and does not have a job; however he does have an extensive criminal history. He also says Harmon is a person of interest in another homicide from last year in Phenix City.

Taylor says Travon Harmon has an extensive criminal background, and has been a suspect in a previous murder investigation. Sheriff Taylor says Harmon will be charged with capital murder, and Russell County District Attorney Kenneth Davis clarified the death penalty is an option, but will make the ultimate decision later.

The investigation is ongoing at this time, and Taylor did not give many more details.

Defense: AL teen accused of killing grandfather, sister not competent to stand trial

There are new details in the case of a Fort Mitchell teen accused of killing his grandfather and sister and injuring a friend earlier this year.

The defense lawyer for Travon Harmon is requesting the 19-year-old be declared mentally incompetent to stand trial.

Harmon's lawyer said a psychiatrist who examined him says the teen suffers from schizophrenia and reportedly believed the victims wanted him to shoot them.

Harmon is charged with two counts of capital murder in the deaths of 76-year-old Leroy Harmon and 26-year-old Bionka Harmon.
