Florida seeks death penalty for mom charged with killing 3-year-old son

PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against a Florida woman accused of killing her 3-year-old son and stuffing him into a suitcase.

State Attorney spokesman David Angier says Bay County prosecutors filed a notice to seek the death penalty Thursday against 27-year-old Egypt Moneeck Robinson. A grand jury indicted her Wednesday on a first-degree murder charge.

The sheriff’s office reports that Robinson’s boyfriend initially went to the first department last month to report the child’s death. Firefighters contacted deputies, who went to Robinson’s home near Panama City. Deputies found the suitcase containing the child’s body floating in water behind the home.

Sheriff Frank McKeithen has said investigators are looking at “ritualistic sacrifice” as a possible motive.

Lawyer for Callaway mom accused of murdering her son claims death penalty is unconstitutional

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A Callaway mom accused of murdering her toddler late last year made another appearance in court Tuesday, where her attorney claimed a court filing the death penalty is now unconstitutional in Florida.

Egypt Robinson, 27 is charged with first degree murder and aggravated child abuse in the death of her three-year-old son, Aries Juan Acevedo.

Bay County Sheriff’s Office investigators found Acevedo's body wrapped in a sheet stuffed in a suitcase behind a Callaway home in late December.

Investigators say Robinson confessed to her roommate that she killed her son.

Prosecutors have announced their intention to seek the death penalty for Robinson, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Robinson's attorney, Kimberly Jewell, has asked the court to strike the state's notice of intent to seek the death penalty. Jewell says a recent United States Supreme Court ruling makes the death penalty unconstitutional in Florida.

In its recent ruling, the Supreme Court said the way Florida sentences offenders to death is unconstitutional because it gives too much power to judges, and not enough consideration to a jury’s wishes. The ruling didn't strike down the death penalty, just the way it's imposed.

Circuit Judge Michael Overstreet did not issue an immediate ruling to Jewell’s motion.

Robinson’s next court date is set for March 7th.

'Ritualistic Sacrifice' Investigated in Child's Death

A Florida sheriff says investigators are considering "ritualistic sacrifice'' among the possible reasons a 3-year-old son was killed and stuffed into a suitcase.

Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen says the child's 27-year-old mother, Egypt Moneeck Robinson, is suspected in the death. She faces a murder charge but hasn't been booked into jail because she's being treated for "self-inflicted'' knife wounds. The boy's body was found Tuesday night in the water behind their house near Panama City.

The News Herald of Panama City reports that the woman made statements while being taken to the hospital about needing to save the child from the end of the world.

McKeithen says investigators haven't determined when the child died. He says Dec. 26 was the last time anyone other than Robinson saw the child.

After law change prosecutors again seek death penalty against mom accused of murder

Now that Florida again has the death penalty a local mom accused of killing her son could once again be facing death.

Egypt Robinson's attorney previously asked the trial judge to take the death penalty off the table after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the method the state used to impose the penalty was unconstitutional.

State Lawmakers changed the rules this session and Gov. Rick Scott signed those changes into law. On Thursday Prosecutors filed a response saying that they could once again seek the death penalty for Robinson thanks to the change in the law.

Circuit Judge Michael Overstreet has not yet ruled on the motions.

Investigators say Robinson confessed to stabbing her three-year-old son, Aries Acevedo in the abdomen, stuffing his body in a suitcase and then placing the suitcase in a pond behind her home in December.

Robinson is scheduled to appear in court on April 4. A trial date for her case has not been set.

Jailhouse interview on table in child's slaying

Prosecutors will try to use a recently recorded jailhouse video to support their case for capital punishment of a mother accused of fatally stabbing her 3-year-old son, according to court records

PANAMA CITY — Prosecutors will try to use a recently recorded jailhouse video to support their case for capital punishment of a mother accused of fatally stabbing her 3-year-old son, according to court records.

Egypt Moneeck Robinson, 27, appeared in court Monday for a routine hearing in her case. She is charged with first-degree murder aggravated child abuse in connection with the death of her 3-year-old son, Aries Juan Acevedo.

Authorities said shortly after her arrest, Robinson admitted to stabbing the child and stuffing his body in a suitcase. She said she threw the suitcase into the swamp behind her Callaway home to protect him from a “Noah’s Ark”-type flood, officials reported.

The State Attorney’s Office now has filed a motion to admit a video of Robinson, taken in March at the Bay County Jail, as evidence in the case. The contents of the video have not been released.

Meanwhile, investigators have yet to rule out “ritual sacrifice” as a motive for Acevedo’s killing. The boy’s body was discovered Dec. 29 in a suitcase in a swamp behind a home at 7023 Benton Drive in Callaway, where Robinson was living. Aries had been stabbed in the chest, and investigators found a 3- to 4-inch piece of concrete in the child’s throat allegedly placed there by Robinson, according to BCSO reports.

Officers reported the child had been dead since Dec. 26, and in the interim Robinson had been arranging to get a bus ticket out of town.

As a sheriff’s deputy approached Robinson to arrest her, she allegedly told him she had killed her son to save him from a biblical flood and asked to be taken to jail, BCSO reported.

“Just put me in handcuffs,” officers quoted Robinson as saying. “I did it. … I killed my baby and put him inside the suitcase … He is floating on top of the water.”

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Robinson, who is being held without bond. Her next court date is scheduled for May 6.

Cellmate: Murder suspect calls toddler son 'soul of Hitler'

    By Zack McDonald
    Panama City News Herald

PANAMA CITY - The cellmate of a mother jailed on charges she stabbed her son has told authorities she had no remorse for his death because "he was the soul of Hitler," according to court documents.

Egypt Moneeck Robinson, 28, remains in custody on charges of aggravated child abuse and first-degree murder. She was arrested after authorities discovered the body of her 3-year-old son, Aries Juan Acevedo, on Dec. 29, 2015, in a suitcase in a swamp behind a Callaway home. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Robinson, who is being held without bond, and could have the testimony of another murder defendant, 28-year-old Tiffany Powell, as a piece of their arsenal at trial, court records stated.

According to a transcript from a December interview, Powell, who at one time was Robinson's cellmate, told investigators Robinson told her she did not believe what she did was wrong. Robinson allegedly said her son was evil and had the soul of Hitler, Powell told investigators.

"She still thinks to this day that he is supposed to be dead," Powell told investigators, according to a police report. "She did it because she said he was the soul of Hitler. His birthday is 4-20 and um he was an evil child, she said. And she said if she didn't kill him um ...; he was going to keep, grow up and kill all of use (sic). She basically she like saved us by sacrificing him."

Authorities said shortly after her arrest, Robinson admitted to stabbing the child and stuffing his body in a suitcase. She said she threw the suitcase into the swamp behind her Callaway home to protect him from a "Noah's Ark"-type flood, officials reported.

Investigators worked the case as a "ritual sacrifice" for a motive in Acevedo's killing. The boy's body was discovered in a suitcase in a swamp behind a home at 7023 Benton Drive in Callaway, where Robinson was living. Aries had been stabbed in the chest, and investigators found a 3- to 4-inch piece of concrete in his throat allegedly placed there by Robinson, officers reported.

Police said he had been dead since Dec. 26, and in the interim Robinson had been arranging to get a bus ticket out of town.

As a sheriff's deputy approached Robinson to arrest her, she allegedly told him she had killed her son to save him from a biblical flood and asked to be taken to jail, BCSO reported.

"Just put me in handcuffs," officers quoted Robinson as saying. "I did it. ...; I killed my baby and put him inside the suitcase. ...; He is floating on top of the water."

Robinson's case has been one of many in Bay County bogged down by changes in Florida's death penalty procedure, although prosecutors still intend to pursue the death penalty. She is scheduled to return to court in February.

After telling investigators about her and Robinson's conversation, Powell requested she no longer be required to share a cell with Robinson, according to court records.

Powell has been in jail since February when she and her husband, 31-year-old Christopher David Powell, were discovered by authorities walking with their children along an Alabama highway. For most of the previous day, law enforcement had been seeking the couple and two of their friends in connection with the death of 59-year-old Carla Maria Hight at her home and the near fatal beating of 43-year-old Marie Rachel Foxworthy.

Tiffany Powell faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder. She has a hearing scheduled today.

Mom deemed incompetent to stand trial in child ‘ritual sacrifice’ case

Prosecutors plan to pursue the death penalty against Egypt Robinson, who is accused of stabbing her toddler to death in a ritual sacrifice.

PANAMA CITY — A mother accused of fatally stabbing her toddler son in 2015 in what authorities described as a “ritual sacrifice” has been committed to a state mental hospital for treatment, according to court records.

Egypt Moneeck Robinson, 30, was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday for a competency hearing in the case. Prosecutors have been seeking the death penalty against her since Dec. 29, 2015, when authorities discovered her 3-year-old son, Aries Juan Acevedo, stabbed to death and stuffed in a suitcase in a swamp behind a Callaway home. Robinson had been tentatively scheduled for trial on charges of aggravated child abuse and felony first-degree murder at the end of October, but the future of her case is uncertain with Robinson being sent to a mental hospital for treatment, court records state.

Documents filed in the case do not reveal the grounds for the decision as psychological and health records are not public. However, Circuit Judge Michael Overstreet deemed Robinson incompetent to proceed Wednesday and is expected to sign an order for her to be committed to a mental hospital.

In recent months, Robinson’s defense attorney, Kim Jewell, filed a notice that she would be presenting testimony of two psychologists during the penalty phase of her trial. Their findings likewise are unclear. But the psychological testimony would be aimed at convincing jurors to not sentence Robinson to death for the killing of her child.

Authorities discovered the boy’s body on Dec. 29, 2015. Aries had been stabbed in the chest, and investigators found a 3- to 4-inch piece of concrete in his throat allegedly placed there by Robinson. However, officers said he had been dead since Dec.

“I did it. ... I killed my baby and put him inside the suitcase. ... He is floating on top of the water.”

According to court records, Robinson also admitted under oath to stabbing Aries. She allegedly told authorities she threw the suitcase into the swamp behind her Callaway home to protect him from a “Noah’s Ark”-type flood, officials reported.

A cellmate of Robinson’s later came forward to tell investigators that Robinson said she did not believe what she did was wrong. Robinson allegedly said her son was evil and had the “soul of Hitler,” the cellmate told investigators.

“She still thinks to this day that he is supposed to be dead,” court records quote the cellmate as saying. “She did it because she said he was the soul of Hitler. His birthday is 4-20 and um he was an evil child, she said. And she said if she didn’t kill him um ... he was going to keep, grow up and kill all of use (sic). She basically she like saved us by sacrificing him.”

Robinson’s case has been one of many in Bay County slowed down as officials waited on changes to Florida’s death penalty procedure, although prosecutors still intend to pursue the death penalty. Her case is scheduled to come back before Overstreet on Oct. 1 for a routine hearing.

Egypt Robinson back in court Thursday

    WJHG/WECP

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The woman accused of stabbing her three-year-old son to death, putting him in a suitcase before placing him in a swamp was back in court Thursday.

Egypt Robinson was subject to a competency hearing to see if she is mentally fit and legally competent to stand trial.

Judge Christopher Peterson heard from two psychologists on Robinson’s mental status but ruled he needed to see more evidence before making a final decision on Robinson’s competency.

There will be a status hearing on June 6 at 9 a.m. that will determine whether Robinson is competent to stand trial or not.
