Riot erupts at Atmore Prison, warden stabbed
ATMORE, Ala. (WPMI) - The Holman Prison in Atmore is on lockdown after an apparent riot.
According to Bob Horton with the Alabama Department of Corrections, multiple prisoners assaulted and stabbed a correctional officer and the prison warden overnight.
Horton tells LOCAL 15 that the first assault happened at approximately 9:15 p.m. Friday, when the correctional officer responded to a fight between inmates in one of the prison dorms.
"The officer was stabbed when he tried to detain one of the inmates involved in the fight," stated Horton. The injured officer was transported to an "offsite medical facility" and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Horten says that Warden Carter Davenport accompanied by other officers entered the dorm to access the situation, when he was stabbed. Davenport was treated on-site for his non-life-threatening injuries. No other officers were injured during the incident.
After the initial assault, inmates were able to gain access to a hallway just outside the housing unit and started a fire. Some of the inmates were able to publish photos and video of the riot. A video allegedly shows the rioting inside the Atmore prison.
Horton says corrections officers and the CERT teams are conducting a complete search of the prison for illegal cell phones and other contraband.
"In response to the situation, the Alabama Department of Corrections deployed three Correctional emergency Response Teams to the prison. The CERT teams were able to successfully enter the dorm, detain the inmates, and secure the area," stated Horton.
An estimated 100 inmates were involved in the riot. Those involved have been segregated from the prison's general population.
Criminal charges are pending against the inmates who were involved in the incident.
The prison is secured and will remain on lockdown until ADOC completes its investigation.
