Update: Orlando nightclub shooting: gunman opens fire in attack on Pulse LGBT club

At least one shooter barricading themselves in building with hostages, according to reports

A number of people have been shot in an attack on a nightclub in Orlando, Florida, police have confirmed, with local reports claiming at least one gunman had barricaded themselves in the building with hostages.

Shots were fired at the Pulse Club, an LGBT nightclub in the city, in the early hours of Sunday. Staff at the venue posted on Facebook: “Everyone get out of pulse and keep running”.

Orlando police said the shooting had resulted in “multiple injuries” and urged people to stay away from the area. Local unconfirmed reports suggested as many as 20 people could have been injured in the attack, and video footage shared on social media showed a high police presence around the club.

One man who claimed he was inside the club said people were “screaming that people are dead”. “They are just pulling people out in stretchers loading them up,” he said. “Please god let everyone make it – tonight was supposed to be a fun night!! One more minute and we would of been shot or worse.”

One witness told Sky News there were more than 100 people inside the venue for the club’s Latin night when the gunman entered the building and began firing into the ceiling and into the crowd.

Anthony Torres said he was outside the club when the shooting began and confirmed that he thought more than one person was involved in the attack. He believed the shooting lasted between 15 and 20 minutes.

“We just heard shots, it was less than a minute, it felt longer,” Ricardo Negroni said. “There was a brief pause and we just ran. Everybody was just faces to the floor. I had someone over me, I really didn’t see [how many gunmen there were]. All I can tell you was the club was packed, there were over 100 people there.”

In a Facebook post, Negroni wrote that the shooter opened fire at about 2am and “people on the dance floor and bar got down on the floor”. He said some people near the bar and back exit managed to escape quickly.

Shooting at Orlando Nightclub Kills About 20, Police Say

    By STEVE KENNY
    The New York Times

About 20 people were killed and at least 42 were wounded when a gunman armed with an assault-style rifle, a handgun and possibly an explosive device opened fire inside a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla., at about 2 a.m., Police Chief John Mina said.

The police classified the attack as a “terror incident.” Local and federal authorities were investigating, and the F.B.I. set up a hotline for tips.

The police and the federal authorities said they were pursuing several angles in the terrorism investigation, both overseas and in the United States.

The gunman was not from the Orlando area and was organized and well-prepared, the police said.

The gunman was found dead inside the Pulse nightclub, one of the largest gay clubs in Orlando, about 5 a.m. after a shootout with officers who were attempting to rescue dozens of people who were being held hostage, said Chief Mina. He confirmed that the gunman had been killed by the police.

The chief said it was difficult to assess the number of clubgoers who had been killed because many of the bodies had not been removed.

The police were searching the club for other explosives that the gunman may have planted during his assault on Pulse.

The shooting began inside the club, the chief said, and continued outside when an officer working at Pulse attempted to confront him. The gunman then ran back into the club, resumed shooting and took hostages.

At 5 a.m., Chief Mina said, the police decided to attempt a rescue, detonating two explosives to distract the gunman and to help clear the club.

“With that advantage,” the chief said, nine officers moved into the club to confront the gunman. In the ensuing shootout, one of the officers was slightly wounded, saved by his Kevlar helmet, the authorities said.

“We rescued about 30 people,” Chief Mina said. During the rescue and shootout, officers with the SWAT team — using an armored vehicle — entered the club and hurried people to safety. Many of them had sought shelter in other sections of the sprawling club.

The survivors escaped under the cover of what the police called the two “discretionary explosions,” the authorities said.

The wounded were taken to three area hospitals. Most were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, the area’s chief trauma center, which is just three blocks from the club.

On its Twitter feed, the Police Department asked other residents to “stay away from area” and said that it was seeking support from local state and federal agencies. Later, employees in the area were asked to stay home if possible.

The club itself posted a message on its Facebook page about 3 a.m.: “Everyone get out of pulse and keep running.”

Customers streamed out of the club into a chaotic situation with little idea of where to go. “Cops were saying, ‘Go, go, clear the area,’ ” Christopher Hansen told an Orlando television station. “You don’t know who’s what and who’s where.”

As the sun came up, helicopter-shot video showed a situation that seemed to be under control, although windows on one side of the club appeared to be shot out.

Phone camera videos shot at the scene show police cars, ambulances and other emergency vehicles outside the club on South Orange Avenue in downtown Orlando. Streets around the the club were shut down for several blocks.

Dozens of officers, paramedics and firefighters from the Orlando police, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the F.B.I. and three area fire departments were called to the scene.

“This will have a lasting effect on our community,” Chief Mina said. “We are a strong community.”

In the hours immediately following the shooting, the local television stations broadcast camera phone videos that captured the chaos at and near Pulse.

One of the videos clearly captured the rescue attempt. Shots could be heard as men and women ran from the nightclub.

Some of the clubgoers told local television reporters that the music was so loud it was difficult, at first, to distinguish the shots from the pulsing beat.

More than 100 people were believed inside the club when the shooting began about 2 a.m.

Orlando Regional Medical Center was placed on lockdown after receiving the first of the victims. “Only essential workers are being allowed access into the building,” the hospital said in a statement.

“Out of an abundance of caution, Arnold Palmer Hospital and Winnie Palmer Hospital have also been placed on lockdown,” the statement added.

On Pulse’s Facebook page, club officials promised to post updates as they came in: “As soon as we have any information, we will update everyone.”

“Please keep everyone in your prayers as we work through this tragic event,” the nightclub post said. “Thank you for your thoughts and love.”

Officials at Orlando Regional Medical Center asked family members of victims and missing people to gather at the north entrance, where they would be escorted inside.

Local television stations broadcast interviews with people outside the club and the hospital, anxiously waiting to hear from people who they said were still inside.

WKMG and WESH broadcast interviews with the crowds milling outside the hospital. One woman said she rushed to the area after she got a call from her daughter, who said, “Please come get us and come get us now.”

One mother told CNN: “A girlfriend of my son called and said he got shot, he got shot and she was crying.”

She said she could not find her son, or even get information on where he had been taken. Some of the victims had been transferred to other hospitals “because this hospital was full,” she said outside Orlando Regional Medical Center.

The club, which calls itself “Orlando’s Latin Hotspot,” hosts an “Upscale Latin Saturdays” party on Saturday night with three D.J.s and a midnight show.

Omar Mateen: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Omar Mir Seddique Mateen has been named as the gunman who killed as many as 20 people and wounded 40 others at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, CBS News reports.

He was later killed by police after taking hostages at the LGBT club.

Mateen, 29, is a U.S. citizen of Afghani descent from Port St. Lucie, Florida, according to CBS News. He has ties to radical Islamic ideology, CBS reports.

Mateen has no known criminal history, according to CBS News.

It is not clear if he was known to federal authorities prior to the attack.

Local FBI Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge Ron Hopper said at the press conference that there are “suggestions” the gunman “may have leanings” toward Jihadist ideology. Hopper had been asked about whether the shooter was connected to radical Islamic terrorism.

Hopper said they can’t say definitively whether the gunmen is connected to that ideology. He said we’re looking into all angles right now.”

    ISIS
supporters and sympathizers on Twitter posted messages after the shooting, but there have been no official claims by the Islamic State terror organization.

It's now being reported by AP that over 50 people have been killed and 53 are injured. If this is true it is the deadliest mass shooting in US history.

Major Muslim Terrorists Makes This Declaration To All Americans: We Are Coming After You, We Will Attack Florida And Slaughter Americans There

    By Theodore Shoebat
    shoebat.com

ISIS Muslim terrorists released a statement on their plan to attack Florida, and even put out a list with the names of people in Florida that they plan on killing. According to one report:

A pro-Isis group has released a hit list with the names of more than 8,000 peoplemostly Americans.

More than 600-people live in Florida, and one security expert believes that many of those targeted live in Palm Beach County and on the Treasure Coast.

The “United Cyber Caliphate” that hacked U.S. Central Command, 54,000 Twitter accounts and threatened President Barack Obama is the same pro-Isis group that’s reportedly created a “kill list” with the names, addresses and emails of thousands of civilian Americans.

Reports of the list came to light online when Vocativ reported the list was shared via the encrypted app, Telegram, and called on supporters to kill.

Former FBI agent-turned lawyer Stuart Kaplan says the threat is especially alarming, because the people on this list are civilians who don’t have the security necessary to protect themselves.

“It’s going to create some hysteria,” he said.

Kaplan believes civilians from our community are on the list.

“I would suspect a head of a hospital or, perhaps, a local community leader. Those are the individuals that may appear on the list–or just a local banker or local school teacher–someone who, for some reason, was in the public eye.”

Kaplan is concerned the list will inspire “lone wolf” style attacks.

“If in fact a sympathizer gets ahold of this list and is readily able to identify you as being his neighbor and, then, decides (because they’re a sympathizer) to go out and do something horrific to you, there is no way to calculate the potential or to prevent that.”

The list has not yet been made public.

We reached out to the FBI, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and Martin County Sheriff’s Office to see how credible they view the threat and what action they might be taking.

    We are awaiting their response.

According to the Martin County Sheriffs office, the FBI is aware of this and the agency will work closely with the Joint-Terrorism Task Force to keep citizens safe.
