Tyrone Jamaal Williams - Texas Death Row

Suspect arrested after mother, daughter slain at Hunt County Home

    By Marc Ramirez
    The Dallas Morning News

A man suspected of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and then killing her and her mother Friday is in custody in Hunt County.

Tyrone Jamaal Williams, 30, is charged with murder in the deaths of Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51, and her daughter Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27.

Officers had responded to a 911 call from a woman screaming for help in the 7300 block of State Highway 50, just outside Commerce city limits.

“It was a woman screaming, ‘I need help! I need help!’” Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks told KXAS-TV (NBC5).

Sheriff’s deputies and Commerce police officers found the two women dead at the scene. Their cause of death has not been released. According to WFAA-TV (Channel 8), two infants inside the home were uninjured and were taken into custody by Child Protective Services.

With the aid of the Texas Rangers, Williams was identified as the main suspect and an unsuccessful search of the area was conducted.

About 11 p.m. Friday, a suspicious citizen called the sheriff’s department to report a barefoot man wearing a hard hat and safety vest walking toward the Commerce Wal-Mart on State Highway 50, WFAA-TV reported.

When approached by officers, Williams at first gave a false name and reason for being in the area barefoot and wearing safety equipment. Upon determining his true identity, officers took him into custody.

Friday’s incident wasn’t the first time the sheriff’s department had been called to the home, Channel 8 said. Earlier this month, a criminal mischief call was reported there after a car’s tires were slashed.

Warrant: Female heard screaming suspect's name in 911 call

    By Marjorie Owens
    WFAA News

COMMERCE, Texas — A warrant revealed the name of a suspect in a violent double homicide was heard several times during a 911 call made from the scene where two women were found violently murdered Friday afternoon at a home located just outside of Commerce in Hunt County.

Tyrone Jamaal Williams, 30, was arrested after a 10-hour manhunt in connection to the murders of his ex-girlfriend, 27-year-old Nicole Elizabeth Gonzales, and her mother, 51-year-old Vickie Ann Gonzales.

The two women were found dead in a bloody scene, where two children were also found alive. The children belong to Williams and the victim Nicole Gonzales.

Authorities say a female called 911 at about 1:17 p.m. Friday and asked for police assistance at a residence in the 7300 block of Highway 50. The arrest warrant revealed that a responding deputy recognized the address as one in which police were called to previously.

The warrant states a later review of the 911 call revealed the sound of a female in the background yell out, "No Tyrone."

"The name Tyrone was heard on the phone call numerous times," the warrant states.

Authorities say a second voice then got on the line and said, "Help me."

Upon arriving at the scene, the deputy found one female victim dead in a pool of blood in the entryway of the home with a 1-year-old child nearby. An infant was also found inside the home in a car seat placed on a couch in the home.

The second female victim was found dead inside a bathroom.

The warrant also disclosed that a filet knife was found on the floor of a bedroom.

The Hunt County Sheriff's Office says they believe Williams broke into the home and waited for the women to arrive before violently attacking them. After a 10-hour search, a citizen tip led to Williams' apprehension.

According to authorities, "numerous" 911 calls were made from the home between the time range of May 6 through June 9.

"The prior calls indicate criminal mischief in which Williams is alleged to have slashed Nicole's tires and scratched the side of the car, a robbery in which Williams stole Nicole's cellphone, and an assault impeding breath in which Williams is alleged to have choked Nicole and an incident in which Williams is supposed to have placed a tracker on Nicole's car," the warrants states.

Authorities also say there's a history of CPS involvement and alleged family violence at the hands of Williams.

Family members say Nicole Gonzales had recently filed a restraining order against Williams after police advised her to do so.

Attorney appointed for suspect in Commerce double homicide

    By Brad Kellar
    The Herald-Banner

An attorney specializing in death penalty capital murder cases has been appointed for a San Marcos man charged in connection with the deaths of a mother and daughter near Commerce.

Meanwhile a benefit account has been established to assist with the funeral arrangements for the victims in the case.

Tyrone Jamaal Williams, 30, remains in the custody of the Hunt County Detention Center, being held in lieu of $1 million bond on a charge of capital murder of multiple persons. Williams had filed a writ of habeas corpus from the jail, seeking the appointment of an attorney.

During a Tuesday morning hearing in the 354th District Court, Judge Richard A. Beacom appointed an attorney from the West Texas Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program to represent Williams on the writ. No additional hearings were immediately scheduled.

Williams is charged in the June 17 murders of Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27, and her mother Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51.

Williams was reportedly the estranged boyfriend of Nichole Gonzales and they were the parents of 2 small children who were also found inside the residence where the murders occurred. The children were unharmed.

The Commerce Police Department reported Tuesday that a viewing for the Nichole and Vicki Gonzales is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. and a vigil from 7:30-8 p.m. Friday at Jones- Walker & Son, 1209 Live Oak Street in Commerce. The funeral home is also accepting donations for the family between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.

Hunt County has been a part of the West Texas Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program since 2012.Each participating county agrees to pay a yearly fee, based on its population and the number of capital murder cases it has filed within the last 10 years. The cost of the program to Hunt County is on a sliding scale, with the costs rising each year to a maximum of $108,000.

There are some limitations to the program. In the event 2 people are charged with capital murder and are facing the death penalty in the same case, the office could only defend one of them. The office also doesn't handle the appeals of any convictions, nor does it pay for "2nd chair" defense attorneys, both of which would be still be paid for through the county. The office also does not handle capital murder cases where the death penalty is not being sought.

Grand jury to begin term this week

    By Brad Kellar
    The Herald-Banner

The latest edition of the Hunt County grand jury is scheduled to begin its work this week.

The panel was seated earlier this month and will meet Friday to start a six-month term of considering the issuance of indictments for presentation to the 354th District Court.

During its tenure, the panel could be considering issuing indictments in cases involving a double homicide, an injury to a child investigation in which the victim died and two alleged attacks on police officers which lead to the officers firing on the suspects.

The previous grand jury, which served the 196th District Court, concluded its term in June after issuing 285 indictments.

The specifics of the cases which are presented to the grand jury are kept confidential until such time as the panel decides whether or not to issue indictments.

The grand jury can either issue indictments — or “true bills” — or determine its investigation did not find sufficient evidence to issue an indictment, in which case a “no bill” is issued.

The indictments are issued open and made public, or are issued sealed if the subject named in the indictment has yet to be arrested and arraigned on the pending charge.

Among the cases which the grand jury may consider during the next six months:

    — Tyrone Jamaal Williams of San Marcos, is being held in the Hunt County Detention Center on a charge of capital murder in connection with the June 17 slayings of Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27, and her mother, Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51 at a residence in the 7300 block of State Highway 50, just outside of Commerce.

Pending capital murder trial moving to new court

    By Brad Kellar
    The Herald-Banner

A pending capital murder trial in connection with a June double homicide near Commerce has been moved to a new court.

Tyrone Jamaal Williams, 30, of San Marcos, is facing a total of seven counts under the indictment, including two counts of capital murder in connection with the June 17 slayings of Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27, and her mother, Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51 at a residence in the 7300 block of State Highway 50, just outside of Commerce.

Williams was indicted by the Hunt County grand jury in August, although a trial date had not scheduled with the 354th District Court.

Judge Richard A. Beacom this week ordered Williams’ trial moved to the jurisdiction of 196th District Court Judge J. Andrew Bench.

Keli Aiken, the judge-elect of the 354th District Court, assumes the bench on Jan. 1, 2017 but has a conflict with the prosecution of Williams, as she was an Assistant Hunt County District Attorney when Williams allegedly committed the crimes and when he was indicted.

Williams is being held in the Hunt County Detention Center in lieu of a total of $1.18 million bond and is being represented by an attorney with the West Texas Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program.

Williams’ indictment includes two counts of capital murder, alleging Williams killed the two women by stabbing or cutting them with a knife or sharp object; two counts of aggravated kidnapping, alleging Williams held the woman against their will while threatening them with a deadly weapon; two counts of endangering a child concerning Williams’ and Nichole Gonzalez’s two small children who were also found inside the residence where the murders occurred; and one count of tampering with physical evidence, for allegedly destroying or concealing clothing and/or footwear.

The capital murder charges each carry a sentence upon conviction of death by lethal injection or life in prison without the possibility of parole and the aggravated kidnapping counts each carry a maximum sentence upon conviction of up to life in prison.

A 911 call came in at around 1:20 p.m. June 22 from Vicki Gonzales, who was screaming for help and calling out Williams’ name. The call came from a home in the 7300 block of State Highway 50, just outside of Commerce.

The Commerce Police Department was the first agency on the scene and found the women had been slain.

Williams’ vehicle was found about three miles away from the home.

A search began for Williams with the assistance of the Commerce Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice K-9 search team.

At approximately 11 p.m. June 22, the Commerce Police Department received a call of a suspicious person in the 2700 block of State Highway 24/50, at the intersection of Live Oak Street. When contacted by officers, Williams allegedly gave officers his brother’s name, but Williams’ identification was found in his possession.

Williams was taken into custody without incident.

Williams was reported to work as a long haul trucker for a Fort Worth company.

Suspect in double homicide appointed second attorney

    By Brad Kellar
    Herald-Banner

A second attorney has been appointed for a San Marcos man, who has pleaded not guilty to killing a mother and daughter near Commerce.

Tyrone Jamaal Williams, 30, is facing a total of seven counts under a capital murder indictment returned by the Hunt County grand jury in connection with the June 17, 2015 slayings of Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27, and her mother, Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51 at a residence just outside of Commerce.

The new attorney will be assisting with Williams’ defense on all charges except the two counts of capital murder, for which he already had an appointed defense counsel specializing in death penalty cases.

An interim hearing in the case is set for March 9.

Williams is being held in the Hunt County Detention Center in lieu of a total of $1.18 million bond and is being represented by an attorney with the West Texas Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program.

Hunt County is a member of the West Texas Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program, which provides defense attorneys in death penalty capital murder cases on a sliding scale, with the costs rising each year to a maximum of $108,000.

There are some limitations to the program, one of which includes the attorney appointed in the capital murder cases is not able to represent Williams on the remaining five felony counts included under the indictment.

The capital murder charges each carry a sentence upon conviction of death by lethal injection or life in prison without the possibility of parole and the aggravated kidnapping counts each carry a maximum sentence upon conviction of up to life in prison.

During a hearing Wednesday, 196th District Court Judge J. Andrew Bench agreed to sever the cases and appointed local attorney to represent Williams on the five non-capital murder counts.

A 911 call came in at around 1:20 p.m. June 17 from Vicki Gonzales, who was screaming for help and calling out Williams’ name. The call came from a home in the 7300 block of State Highway 50.

    New charge in 2016 murders

    By Brad Keller
    Herald-Banner

A Travis County woman has been charged in connection with a 2016 double homicide of a mother and daughter near Commerce.

Mabel Jean Gonzalez, 42, of Austin was indicted by the Hunt County grand jury in June on one count of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. Gonzalez was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to the charge during a hearing Tuesday in the 196th District Court. An interim hearing concerning discovery evidence was scheduled in the court for Sept. 6.

In a criminal complaint filed as part of court records, the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office revealed Gonzalez was the girlfriend of Tyrone Jamaal Williams who has pleaded not guilty to seven counts under a capital murder indictment in connection with the June 17, 2016 slayings of Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27, and her mother, Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51.

Williams, 31, of San Marcos, is being held in the Hunt County Detention Center in lieu of a total of $1.18 million bond and is being represented by an attorney with the West Texas Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program.

Williams was taken into custody without incident.

Williams was reported to work as a long haul trucker for a Fort Worth company.

The criminal complaint against Gonzalez alleged that after she visited Williams in the jail, she drove to a location near the murder scene and removed items from the site.

A trial date has not yet been set in Williams’ case.

During a hearing Friday in the 196th District Court, Gonzales pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of attempting to tamper with or fabricating evidence. Judge Andrew Bench set a sentencing date for August 15 and agreed to a lower bond in the case.

The attempting to tamper charge carries a maximum punishment upon conviction of from two to 10 years in prison and an optional fine of up to $10,000.

In a criminal complaint filed as part of court records, the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office revealed Gonzales was the girlfriend of Tyrone Jamaal Williams who has pleaded not guilty to seven counts under a capital murder indictment in connection with the June 17, 2016 slayings of Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27, and her mother, Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51.

Williams, 32, of San Marcos, is being held in the Hunt County Detention Center in lieu of a total of $1.18 million bond on an indictment which includes two counts of capital murder, alleging Williams killed the two women by stabbing or cutting them with a knife or sharp object; two counts of aggravated kidnapping, alleging Williams held the woman against their will while threatening them with a deadly weapon; two counts of endangering a child concerning Williams’ and Nichole Gonzales’ two small children who were also found inside the residence where the murders occurred; and one count of tampering with physical evidence, for allegedly destroying or concealing clothing and/or footwear.

A pretrial hearing in Williams’ case is scheduled May 14. A trial date has not yet been set.

A 911 call came in at around 1:20 p.m. June 17, 2016 from Vicki Gonzales, who was screaming for help and calling out Williams’ name. The call came from a home in the 7300 block of State Highway 50.

June 17, 2016 the Commerce Police Department received a call of a suspicious person in the 2700 block of State Highway 24/50, at the intersection of Live Oak Street. When contacted by officers, Williams allegedly gave officers his brother’s name, but Williams’ identification was found in his possession.

Williams was taken into custody without incident.

Williams was reported to work as a long haul trucker for a Fort Worth company.

The criminal complaint against Gonzales alleged that after she visited Williams in the jail, she drove to a location near the murder scene and removed items from the site.
