Hearing set in double murder case

    By Brad Kellar
    Herald-Banner

A hearing is set this week for a San Marcos man, who has pleaded not guilty to killing a mother and daughter in Hunt County almost two years ago.

Another individual pleaded guilty last month to her role, which was connected to the same case.

Tyrone Jamaal Williams, 32, is facing two counts of capital murder in connection with the June 17, 2016 slayings of Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27, and her mother, Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51 at a residence just outside of Commerce.

Williams is being represented by an appointed defense counsel specializing in death penalty cases.

A pretrial hearing in the case is scheduled Monday in the 196th District Court. A trial date has not been set.

Williams is being held in the Hunt County Detention Center in lieu of a total of $1.18 million bond and is being represented by an attorney with the West Texas Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program.

Mabel Jean Gonzales, 42, of Austin was indicted in June 2017 on one count of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence with the intent to impair.

During an April 27 hearing in the 196th District Court, Gonzales pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of attempting to tamper with or fabricating evidence. Judge Andrew Bench set a sentencing date for August 15 and agreed to a lower bond in the case.

The attempting to tamper charge carries a maximum punishment upon conviction of from two to 10 years in prison and an optional fine of up to $10,000.

In a criminal complaint filed as part of court records, the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office revealed Gonzales was Williams’ girlfriend. The complaint indicated that after she visited Williams in the jail, Gonzales drove to a location near the murder scene and removed items from the site.

Sentencing this week in Commerce double homicide

    By Brad Kellar
    Herald-Banner

Sentencing is set to take place next week for a Travis County woman who pleaded guilty to a charge in connection with a 2016 double homicide of a mother and daughter near Commerce.

Mabel Jean Gonzales of Austin pleaded guilty in April to attempting to tamper with or fabricate evidence, and 196th District Court Judge Andrew Bench scheduled the punishment hearing for August 15.

The attempting to tamper plea carries a maximum punishment of two to 10 years in prison and a possible fine of up to $10,000.

In a criminal complaint, the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office revealed Gonzales was the girlfriend of Tyrone Jamaal Williams, who has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of capital murder in connection with the June 17, 2016, slayings of Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27, and her mother, Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51.

Williams, of San Marcos, is being held in the Hunt County Detention Center on a $1.18 million bond. The indictment alleges Williams killed the two women by stabbing or cutting them with a knife or sharp object and that he held the woman against their will while threatening them with a deadly weapon. The indictment also includes two counts of endangering a child concerning Williams’ and Nichole Gonzales’ two small children who were also found inside the residence where the murders occurred; and one count of tampering with physical evidence, for allegedly destroying or concealing clothing and/or footwear.

A pretrial hearing in Williams’ case is scheduled Sept. 21. A trial date has not yet been set.

The Commerce Police Department was the first agency on the scene and found the women had been slain. Williams’ vehicle was found about three miles away from the home.

A search began for Williams with the assistance of the Commerce Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice K-9 search team.

Williams was taken into custody without incident.

Williams worked as a long haul trucker for a Fort Worth company.

The criminal complaint against Gonzales alleged that after she visited Williams in the jail, she drove to a location near the murder scene and removed items from the site.

    Herald-Banner

A hearing is set in state district court today for a defendant charged in a reported double homicide near Commerce almost three years ago.

Tyrone Jamaal Williams is facing a potential death sentence if convicted of capital murder during a trial scheduled this summer.

Williams is being held in the Hunt County Detention Center in lieu of a total of $1.18 million bond and is being represented by defense counsel with the West Texas Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program, which recently filed a motion to reduce Williams’ bond and a motion to quash.

The specifics of the filings were not available, as much of the proceedings surrounding the case have been sealed.

Today’s hearing is scheduled at 10 a.m. in the 196th District Court.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin July 15, with trial starting Sept. 9.

Williams, of San Marcos, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of capital murder in connection with the 2016 slayings of Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27, and her mother, Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51 at a residence just outside of Commerce.

Williams’ indictment includes two counts of capital murder, alleging Williams killed the two women by stabbing or cutting them with a knife or sharp object.

A 911 call came in at around 1:20 p.m. June 17, 2016 from Vicki Gonzales, who was screaming for help and calling out Williams’ name. The call came from a home in the 7300 block of State Highway 50.

At approximately 11 p.m. the Commerce Police Department received a call of a suspicious person in the 2700 block of State Highway 24/50, at the intersection of Live Oak Street. When contacted by officers, Williams allegedly gave officers his brother’s name, but Williams’ identification was found in his possession.

Williams was taken into custody without incident.

Trial nearing in Commerce double-murder case, three years later

    By Brad Kellar
    Herald-Banner

As the three-year anniversary of a double homicide near Commerce approaches, the accused killer’s murder trial has been scheduled for September.

Tyrone Jamaal Williams of San Marcos has pleaded not guilty to two counts of capital murder, indicted for the June 17, 2016 deaths of Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27, and her mother, Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51.

Williams faces a potential death sentence if convicted. In a related case, Mabel Jean Gonzales of Austin pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence related to the murder investigation and is now awaiting sentencing.

Williams remains in the Hunt County Detention Center on a $1.18 million bond; he is being represented by an attorney with the West Texas Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program. A review hearing and a deadline for plea agreements is scheduled for June 24 in the 196th District Court.

Most of the proceedings surrounding the case have been sealed. But records revealed this week that jury selection is scheduled to begin July 15, with the start of testimony set for Sept. 9.

Williams previously pleaded not guilty to two counts of capital murder in connection with the fatal stabbings of the two women at a residence just outside of Commerce.

The indictment alleges that Williams killed the two women by stabbing or cutting them with a knife or sharp object.

A 911 call came in at 1:20 p.m. on June 17, 2016, from Vicki Gonzales, who was screaming for help and calling out Williams’ name, police reports showed. The call came from a home in the 7300 block of State Highway 50.

The Commerce Police Department was first on the scene and found the women had been slain. Williams’ vehicle was found about three miles away from the home, authorities said.

A search began for Williams with the assistance of the Commerce Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice K-9 search team.

At approximately 11 p.m., Commerce police received a call of a suspicious person in the 2700 block of State Highway 24/50, at the intersection of Live Oak Street.

When officers arrived and found Williams, he allegedly identified himself as someone else, but police found Williams’ identification in his possession. He was then arrested without incident, police said.

In the related tampering case, Gonzales pleaded guilty in April 2018 to attempting to tamper with or fabricate evidence, which carries a maximum punishment of two to 10 years in prison and an optional fine of up to $10,000.

Gonzales – Williams’ girlfriend, police said – visited him in jail shortly after his arrest and then drove to the area of the murders and removed items from the site, authorities said in court documents. She has has yet to be formally sentenced.

Attorneys seek dismissal of charge in 2016 double murder

    By Brad Keller
    Commerce Journal

Attorneys for a defendant charged in a reported double homicide near Commerce more than three years ago are seeking to have the pending capital murder indictment dismissed.

The West Texas Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program is representing Tyrone Jamaal Williams and claims the case should be thrown out after the Hunt County District Attorney’s Office may have acted on confidential information regarding Williams’ defense strategy.

Williams is facing a potential death sentence if convicted of capital murder. Trial is currently scheduled next April.

Susan E. Anderson and Mark Hendrickson with the public defender’s office filed an amended motion to dismiss the indictment due to prosecutorial misconduct with 196th District Court Judge Andrew Bench on Oct. 21.

The motion notes how ex parte defense witnesses met with Williams and the defense team at the Hunt County Detention Center and that the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office was instructed in writing to keep the visits confidential and the disclosure of any of the visits was prohibited.

“On multiple occasions, personnel with the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office logged into their Odyssey program, the name of the expert in addition to the dates and times they visited the accused,” the motion said, adding that the DA’s office has access to the system and learned of the identities of the witnesses.

Based on the information obtained, the motion said, Assistant District Attorney Steve Lilley filed a “Lagrone Motion” which sought to have Williams evaluated by mental health personnel retained by the prosecution.

The defense team claims the sheriff made an improper disclosure, which was used improperly by the prosecution which prejudiced Willliams’ chance for a fair trial.

“While the dismissal of the charging instrument is an extreme remedy, in some cases it is the only remedy that remove the taint of the improper use of privileged information,” the motion said.

Bench did not immediately take action, but advised the defense team to submit a formal brief to his court by Oct. 25 and instructed the district attorney’s office to file a response by Oct. 29. A hearing on the motion to dismiss has been scheduled for Nov. 15.

Williams, of San Marcos, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of capital murder in connection with the 2016 slayings of Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27, and her mother, Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51 at a residence just outside of Commerce.

Williams, 33, is being held in the Hunt County Detention Center in lieu of a total of $1.18 million bond.

When contacted by officers, Williams allegedly gave officers his brother’s name, but Williams’ identification was found in his possession.

Defendant, attorneys in capital murder case at odds

    By Brad Kellar
    Herald-Banner

The suspect charged with capital murder in a 2016 double homicide near Commerce is wanting a new attorney to represent him and his existing defense counsel is also wanting to leave the case.

A hearing is scheduled this week concerning the motion filed by Tyrone Jamaal Williams, seeking to dismiss the team from the West Texas Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program. The program, in turn, is asking the judge for permission to withdraw from representing Williams.

The hearing is scheduled Thursday in the 196th District Court.

In a motion filed with the court Feb. 14, the attorneys indicated that Williams has filed several complaints against his defense team, the most recent of which on Feb. 11 alleged Williams was the victim of criminal acts on the part of Mark Hendrickson, who is a member of the defense team.

“The filing of this criminal complaint has created an irreconcilable conflict between Mr. Williams and Mr. Hendrickson,” attorney Edward Ray Keith Jr. said in the motion to withdraw.

The allegations are the latest in a series of incidents involving the potential death penalty case, with jury selection currently scheduled in June and with the start of testimony planned pm Aug.10.

Williams, of San Marcos, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of capital murder in connection with the 2016 slayings of Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27, and her mother, Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51, at a residence just outside of Commerce.

Williams, 33, is being held in the Hunt County Detention Center in lieu of a total of $1.18 million bond. He has pleaded not guilty.

Williams’ indictment includes two counts of capital murder, alleging Williams killed the two women by stabbing or cutting them with a knife or sharp object.

Attorneys for suspect in capital murder case allowed to withdraw

    By Brad Kellar
    Herald-Banner

The attorneys for a suspect charged with capital murder in a double homicide near Commerce have been dismissed from the case, a move which is likely to again postpone the trial of Tyrone Jamaal Williams, a prosecution which has already taken almost four years.

In an order issued Thursday, 196th District Court Judge Andrew Bench agreed with the attorneys who were seeking to withdraw from the proceedings.

Bench did not immediately schedule any additional hearings or appoint any other attorneys to represent Williams. Trial in the case, in which prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, is scheduled this summer.

Williams filed a motion to dismiss the team from the West Texas Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program. The program, in turn, was asking the judge for permission to withdraw from representing Williams.

Hunt County has been a part of the program. which helps pay for defense attorneys in death penalty capital murder cases, since first enrolling in August 2012. The cost of the program to Hunt County is on a sliding scale, with the costs rising each year.

In a motion filed with the court Feb. 14, the attorneys indicated Williams had filed several complaints against his defense team, the most recent of which on Feb. 11 alleged Williams was the victim of criminal acts on the part of Mark Hendrickson, who is a member of the defense team.

Trial in Commerce double homicide to be delayed

    By Brad Kellar
    Herald-Banner

The trial of a Travis County man, indicted with capital murder in connection with a double homicide of a mother and daughter near Commerce four years ago, is expected to be postponed because of ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The initial stages of jury selection in the trial of Tyrone Jamaal Williams were scheduled to begin Monday in the 196th District Court.

But the Hunt County Courthouse remains closed to the public because of the pandemic. Under an executive order issued by Gov. Greg Abbott, trials are not expected to begin in the state until at least Aug. 1.

Opening arguments and the start of testimony in Williams’s potential death penalty case had previously been scheduled to get underway on Aug. 10.

During a hearing conducted via Zoom teleconferencing Tuesday, Judge Andrew Bench indicated that a new scheduling order and dates would be set and mailed to both the prosecution and defense attorneys. The new dates had not been announced as of press time Wednesday.

Williams, 34, of San Marcos, has pleaded not guilty to an indictment with two counts of capital murder in connection with the 2016 slayings of Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27, and her mother, Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51 at a residence just outside of Commerce.
