Judge rules man accused of 4 murders unfit to stand trial

    By 41 Action News Staff

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man charged with killing his grandparents, sister and and his 3-month-old nephew was found mentally unfit for trial.

A Platte County, Missouri, judge ruled in March that Grayden Denham, 28, of Edgerton, Missouri, would be sent to the Missouri Department of Mental Health for further mental evaluation, according to court documents

In February 2016, at the home of Denham's grandparents – Russell and Shirley Denham – the couple, their granddaughter, Heather Ager, 32 and Heather's 3-month-old son were found dead.

Fire destroyed a home and the victim's bodies were burned, according to a 2016 news release from the Platte County Prosecutor's Office.

Denham stole his grandparents car and ended up in Arizona. He was found walking naked along a road in Seligman, Arizona, hours after the killings, arson and car theft.

The stolen car was found at a nearby motel, its license plates replaced with ones stolen in Oklahoma, according to information released in 2016.

Jail records show Denham was in the Platte County Jail on Tuesday night.

Trial set for KC-area man charged with murdering 4, including 3-month-old nephew

    By Heidi Schmidt
    Fox 4 News

PLATTE CITY, Mo. — The trial is scheduled to begin Dec. 7 for a northwest Missouri man charged with killing four members of his family.

Grayden Denham is charged with four counts of first-degree murder, fatally shooting his grandparents, his sister and her 3-month-old son in February 2017. Their bodies were found outside a burning home near Edgerton.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges. Platte County prosecutors have said they plan to seek the death penalty if Denham is convicted of the murders.

Denham has had two competency evaluations this year as his defense team prepares for trial.

Investigators said Denham stole the family car from his grandparents, 82-year-old Russell and 81-year-old Shirley Denham, following their deaths in 2017.

A manhunt spanning several states began when other family members couldn’t locate Denham. Police eventually found Denham wandering naked in Arizona.

They then located Russell and Shirley Denham’s brown Nissan parked at a motel parking lot. Clothes were found outside the car, and Denham’s wallet was inside the pants.

Officers arrested Denham and he was extradited back to Missouri to stand trial.

Jury selection begins for Edgerton man charged with murdering 4 family members

    By Heidi Schmidt
    Fox 4 News

PLATTE CITY, Mo. — Jury selection is underway for the trial of an Edgerton, Missouri man charged with murdering four members of his family.

Grayden Denham, 29, is charged with four counts of first-degree murder, arson, animal abuse and a number of other crimes.

Prosecutors say Denham shot and killed his grandparents, sister, and 3-month-old nephew in an Edgerton home in 2016. He is accused of setting each victim, including the family dog, on fire. Investigators said Denham then stole his grandparents’ car.

When other family members couldn’t reach Denham, investigators initiated a multi-state manhunt. Denham was later arrested after officers found him wandering naked in Arizona. The car he is accused of stealing was parked at a nearby hotel.

In 2020, a judge ruled that Denham was not mentally fit to stand trial and was instead committed to the Missouri Department of Health.

Denham has had two competency evaluations this year to determine whether he can aid in his own defense before proceeding to trial.

Platte County man found guilty of murdering four family members in 2016

    By MaKenzie Koch
    Fox 4 Kansas City News

PLATTE CITY, Mo. — A Platte County man has been found guilty in the 2016 murders of four family members.

A Platte County jury found Grayden Denham guilty on Tuesday of four counts of first-degree murder for the shooting deaths of his grandparents, sister and 3-month-old nephew.

The bodies of 82-year-old Russell and 81-year-old Shirley Denham, along with 31-year-old Heather and her son Mason, were found outside a burning home near Edgerton.

Denham was also found guilty of second-degree arson, animal abuse, stealing a motor vehicle and four counts of armed criminal action.

It took the jury just over two hours to return their verdict Tuesday afternoon.

Prosecutors said Denham shot and then set each victim, including the family dog, on fire.

Sentencing is set for 9 a.m. on Feb. 25 in Platte County Court.

Missouri man sentenced in deaths of 4 family members

    AP

PLATTE CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri man who killed four family members and burned their bodies was sentenced Friday to four life sentences without parole plus 115 years, Platte County authorities said.

Grayden Denham, 30, was convicted in December of shooting and killing his grandfather, his grandmother, his sister and her 3-month-old son at their home near Edgerton on Feb. 19, 2016.

He was arrested two days later when he was found walking naked near Seligman, Arizona, police said.

Firefighters found the bodies of Russell Denham, 82; Shirley Denham, 81; Heather Ager, 31; and her son, Mason Schiavoni, all of whom had been shot and set on fire, Platte County prosecutors said. A family dog was also killed and burned, authorities said.

Denham stole his grandparents’ car and drove to Arizona.

Witnesses testified during the trial about increased tension between Denham and his family before the murders. He was seen arguing with his grandfather the day before the killings and evidence also showed he was using methamphetamine, the Platte County Prosecutor’s office said in a news release.

The jury convicted Denham of four counts of first degree murder, four counts of armed criminal action, animal abuse, second degree arson, and stealing.
