Paris police attacker a radicalised Islamist, says French prosecutor

Police now believe stabbings were terrorist attack reveals Jean-François Ricard

    The Guardian

A police administrator who stabbed and killed four people at Paris's police headquarters on Thursday was a radicalised Islamist who slit the throat of at least one of his victims, the French anti-terrorist prosecutor revealed on Saturday.

Mickael H acted with premeditation, buying two knives shortly before the attack on Thursday lunchtime in the centre of the city, and exchanging more than 30 religious text messages with his wife.

France’s national anti-terrorist prosecutor, Jean-François Ricard, said several elements led police to believe it was a terrorist attack and said they had been able to retrace the actions of the attacker “with precision” thanks to CCTV and his electronic pass giving access to the police building.

Three police officers and a police administrator were killed in the attack. A fifth person, also part of the administration team, was gravely injured. The investigation into the “murder and attempted murder of public agents” in connections with a “terrorist organisation” has been handed over to the anti-terrorist brigade.

Ricard said the attacker had arrived for work at the police headquarters at 8.58am on Thursday after taking the suburban train near his home in the north-west suburb of Gonesse. At 12.18pm he left the police complex on the Île de la Cité.

“He went to a shop in the Rue Saint Jacques and bought two knives. One was a metal kitchen knife 33cm long with a 20cm blade, the other was an oyster knife. Leaving the shop he took a detour and hid the knives he had bought on him,” Ricard told a press conference. He said the attacker’s behaviour during this time “displayed no nervousness”.

After Mickael H returned to his office, Ricard described how “in circumstances to be established … he mortally wounded with his knife, two victims who were getting ready to go to lunch”. He said that the first victim, a 50-year-old, suffered a large wound to the neck, a second, aged 38, was fatally stabbed several times around the thorax and abdomen.

“The autopsies carried out after these deaths show that it was a scene of extreme violence,” he added. “The attacker then went to another office on the same floor and stabbed a 37-year-old agent several times, two of them fatal. He then tried to go into another office, luckily closed, in which three police staff were having their lunch.”

The attacker then took the stairs and stabbed a 39-year-old police officer, who died of their wounds. At the ground level he attacked a member of the administrative staff leaving them with serious but non-fatal wounds to the neck.

In the prefecture courtyard, he was challenged by a trainee police officer who tried to reason with him telling him to drop his knife. He told police that the man ignored his appeals and ran at him with the knife, so he shot him twice. “The total length of this killing spree is estimated at seven minutes,” Ricard said.

Describing Mikhaël H, 45 and born on the French island of Martinique, Ricard said he had been left deaf after suffering with meningitis. He had converted to Islam several years ago, according to witnesses.

He joined the police in 2003, and worked as a computer expert with the surveillance department. He had no criminal record but appeared in court on charges of domestic violence in 2009. “We are now looking into motives and accomplices to this attack,” Richard said.

He said Mikhaël H and his wife, 38, who is being questioned by police as a suspected accomplice, exchanged 33 SMS messages between 11.21am and 11.50am on Thursday. He said the subject matter of these messages were “exclusively religious” and ended with the words: “Allahu Akbar” and “Follow our beloved prophet Mohamed and reflect on the Qu’ran”.

“These SMS, if not explicit about any possible attack, nevertheless were sent only 30 minutes before the knives were bought,” Ricard said. He added the attacker was believed to have been in contact with others thought to belong to “a Salafist movement”.

Witnesses have told police the attacker showed signs of radicalisation, notably expressing support for Islamist actions, his reluctance to have contact with women, justification of the 2015 attack on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and changing his dress several months ago from “western clothing to that suitable for the mosque”.

Ricard said the investigation had become one for anti-terrorist investigators because of “a combination of elements … the premeditated character of the attack, his professed desire to die during the attack, the nature of the attacks and the injuries inflicted on at least one of the victims, the context of latent radicalisation and the exclusively religious message sent before the attack”.

US-born Alabama woman who joined ISIS is not an American citizen, judge rules

    By Louis Casiano
    Fox News

A federal judge ruled Thursday that an American-born woman who traveled to Syria to join the Islamic State (ISIS) group and now wants to return to her family in Alabama is not a U.S. citizen.

U.S. District Court Judge Reggie Walton dismissed a lawsuit brought by the family of Hoda Muthana to force the federal government to let her in the country.

Muthana, 25, currently lives with her 2-year-old son in a refugee camp in Syria and has since repudiated the terrorist group. A court motion said she and child, identified only as John Doe, were moved from the Roj refugee camp after receiving death threats from ISIS supporters and that their lives are in danger, The New York Times reported.

“The citizenship status of minor John Doe depends upon the status of Ms. Muthana; accordingly, regardless of the choices made by his mother, the health and survival of a young U.S. citizen depends upon the expeditious resolution of Ms. Muthana’s civil case,” the claim said.

In addition to dismissing a lawsuit, Walton also ruled that Muthana's father, Ahmed Ali Muthana, could not provide financial support to his daughter or grandson without being subject to charges of providing material support of terrorism.

Walton ruled that Ali Muthana, who formerly represented Yemen in the United Nations, is still a diplomat. Children born to diplomats are not granted automatic citizenship in the U.S.

Ali Muthana left his post before his daughter was born in 1994 in Hackensack, N.J., according to The Times. However, the federal government said it wasn't notified of the change until 1995 and stopped recognizing his diplomatic status only then.

Muthana's lawyer, Christina Jump, said that there was a "likely basis" to appeal Walton's ruling.

“While we are disappointed with and disagree with the court’s ruling today, this is not the end of our client’s legal options,” Jump said.

In 2014, Muthana withdrew from college and left her home in Alabama to travel to Syria after being radicalized by ISIS online. She promoted the group's ideology on social media and called on Muslims to commit attacks in America, such as drive-by shootings and attempts to assassinate former President Barack Obama.

While in Syria, she had a child with an ISIS fighter who was later killed.

She has since apologized for her actions and said she wishes to return to the U.S. In February, Muthana said she wanted to come home even if it meant facing charges. Her passport was canceled in 2016 under the Obama administration.

"I was really young and ignorant," Muthana said in an interview with the Guardian. "I believe that America gives second chances. I want to return, and I’ll never come back to the Middle East. America can take my passport and I wouldn’t mind.”

The case became politically-charged as it gained widespread notoriety.

The State Department had said she wasn't a citizen, and President Trump ordered Secretary of State Mike Pompeo not to let her in the country.

The judge said he received thousands of messages mostly "spewed with hate" and threats against him if he ruled in Muthana's favor. He described them as failed attempts to "intimidate the court."

Convicted terrorist Usman Khan who carried out the knife attack on London Bridge was released from prison in December 2018 on license. Metropolitan Police have a shoot-to-kill policy in London as to any terror-related incident. The story is developing further into Khan's background.

Naval Air Station shooter wrote manifesto condemning US as 'nation of evil:' report

    By Paulina Dedaj
    FOX News

The Saudi national who opened fire in a classroom at a naval air station in Florida Friday morning, killing three before being shot dead by officers, condemned the United States as a “nation of evil” in a post online, reports say.

Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani, who was said to be a second lieutenant in a flight training program for foreign military personnel at Naval Air Station Pensacola, posted a short manifesto to Twitter where he claimed to be “against evil,” AFP reported, citing the SITE Intelligence Group.

“America as a whole has turned into a nation of evil,” the post reportedly continued.

According to SITE, a group that monitors jihadist media, Alshamrani allegedly wrote in this manifesto that he “hates” Americans for their supposed crimes against Muslims and “humanity.”

"I'm not against you for just being American, I don't hate you because your freedoms, I hate you because every day you supporting, funding and committing crimes not only against Muslims but also humanity," he wrote, according to the report.

A spokesperson for Twitter told Fox News in an email statement Saturday that the account was suspended but they declined to comment further as to when the manifesto was tweeted out.

Alshamrani entered a classroom early Friday morning and opened fired, killing three people and injuring several others, including two Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies, who were the first to respond.

Sources told Fox News that the scene of the shooting -- the classroom, where students usually spend three months at the beginning of the program -- indicated that the shooter was a student who was “early” in his training.

The majority of the hundreds of foreign aviation students who have participated in the program are from Saudi Arabia, the Navy said. The Naval training program has about 1,500 pilots in total.

Six Saudi nationals were detained for questioning following Friday’s shooting, although their ties to the shooter were not immediately known.

The shooting is the second at a U.S. naval base this week. A sailor whose submarine was docked at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, opened fire on three civilian employees Wednesday, killing two before taking his own life.

London Bridge ‘hero’ convicted of murder gets slew of death threats

    By Lee Brown
    The New York Post

A convicted murderer who rushed in to tackle the killer London Bridge terrorist has been moved to a secure jail after getting death threats, according to a report Sunday.

James Ford, 42, was initially seen as a hero, rushing in to tackle knifeman Usman Khan and also giving CPR to 23-year-old Saskia Jones, one of two who died in the Nov. 29 UK terror attack.

But it later emerged that he was on day release serving a life sentence for murdering Amanda Champion, a 21-year-old woman with learning disabilities who was found strangled and with her neck slit, with her family insisting Ford is “not a hero.”

The revelations sparked online death threats, according to The Sun, leading prison bosses to move him from his easy-going open prison to the higher-security Elmley Prison for his own protection.

“Management decided it was best to move him because of the threats,” a prison source told the paper.

“Some were saying he should have died because of what he did. It was thought best for his own protection he should switch prisons.”

Ford is getting counseling over Jones’ death, and is expected to be back in cushy Standford Hill by the New Year, the paper said.

“He is not a hero. He’s a murderer,” Champion’s aunt, Angela Cox, has said.

Ford was one of several inmates attending a conference on offender rehab alongside Khan when he went on his murderous rampage. The two dead — Jones and Jack Merritt, 25 — were both workers helping the convicts.

Waukesha parade suspect Darrell Brooks rages in court, attacks witnesses in cross-examination

    By Michael Ruiz
    Fox News

Darrell Brooks Jr., the 40-year-old Milwaukee man accused of killing six people and mowing down dozens more at a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, last year, raged in court and called into question the credibility of witnesses while cross-examining them in court Thursday.

Brooks, who is representing himself, has repeatedly interrupted the court since the very beginning of his trial. On multiple occasions, Judge Jennifer Dorow has ordered him out the courtroom.

During the proceedings Thursday, she allowed him to speak at length but ultimately dismissed most of what he said as irrelevant, according to a transcript provided by FOX 6 Milwaukee.

Brooks also repeatedly interrupted Dorow, finally beginning a 50-minute rant and asserting that the court had a conflict of interest, and he had not been able to "face his accuser." At one point, he told the court he moves "for this case to be dismissed" on the grounds that he did not receive "certified copies" of court documents and claimed that "there are many other victims that are not talked about."

Finally, Dorow cut him off, and Waukesha District Attorney Sue Opper called Brooks' "sovereign citizen" arguments "ridiculous."

"The only argument I could discern in those 50 minutes is that this case be dismissed," Dorow said, adding that Brooks had failed to file a "proper motion."

The haranguing followed Brooks' cross-examination of Laura Thein, a member of the "Dancing Grannies" group which had participated in the parade.

Thein said she saw Brooks' red SUV streak through the parade, striking multiple people.

"I looked around and there were so many bodies on the ground," she said. "I thought I was in a war."

However, Brooks asked her if she got a look at the driver.

"No, I don't have eyes in the back of my head," the survivor replied.

Thein's friend and fellow Dancing Granny, 79-year-old Virginia Sorenson, was killed in the attack, along with Jackson Sparks, 8, LeAnna Owen, 71, Tamara Durand, 52, Jane Kulich, 52 and Wilhelm Hospel, 81.

Brooks initially pleaded not guilty by reason of mental defect, but reversed course before trial, fired his public defenders and sought to represent himself.

From a jail visitation room after his arrest, Brooks told Fox News Digital that he felt "dehumanized" and "demonized."

Prior to this offense, Brooks had a 50-page rap sheet that included charges stemming from multiple attacks on women and other family members. He was released on $1,000 bail just days before the parade after allegedly beating up an ex-girlfriend, breaking her phone and running her over with the same SUV used in the attack. His first conviction came after a 1999 aggravated battery with intent to cause great bodily harm.

The court recessed at noon CT for lunch.

Again, with Brooks today he was pounding the desk causing the judge to again adjourn the case.

Trial in absentia should totally be a thing for creatures such as this.
