The Trials and Affairs of Terrorists in the non DP World

This thread will deal with high profile attacks.

Nearly 50 dead, more than 100 reported injured in terror attack at Istanbul airport

Close to 50 people were killed and over 100 more were injured when three suicide bombers attacked Istanbul's main international airport Tuesday night, a senior official said.

The Associated Press, quoting an anonymous Turkish official, reported that "nearly" 50 people were dead in the blasts at Istanbul Ataturk Airport. The private NTV broadcaster, citing hospital sources, reported that 106 people had been wounded. A Turkish official told Reuters that the "vast majority" of victims were Turkish, but some foreigners were also affected.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the same senior Turkish official told AP that initial indications suggested the Islamic State terror group (ISIS) were behind the attack. According to Reuters, a police source also told the Dogan News Agency, "ISIS is behind the attack." There was no immediate formal confirmation from the Ankara government.

The attack occurred one day before the two-year anniversary of ISIS declaring a caliphate across large swathes of Iraq and Syria, led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Initial reports indicated that there had been two suicide bombers, at least one of whom attacked the airport's international terminal. Istanbul provincial governor Vasip Sahin said authorities believed there were three attackers because three explosions had been heard.

Charred bodies still being pulled from Baghdad bombing that killed 200

Nearly two days after a suicide truck bomb ripped through Baghdad, families are still hoping that rescuers searching through the rubble can locate the bodies of their loved ones.

The Saturday night attack on a busy shopping district was the deadliest single incident in the Iraq's war-weary capital in years, killing at least 200 people, Mohamed al-Rubaye‎, the deputy head of the security committee of the Baghdad Provincial Council, said on Afaq TV Monday.

Crews are still on the scene in the Karrada neighborhood where the blast occurred, trying to pull bodies from the devastation.

And 81 of the bodies are so charred, DNA testing will need to be conducted in order to identify them, al-Rubaye said.

One couple at the scene was searching for their teenage son who'd gone to a cafe with his friends to celebrate his birthday.

Another man was looking for five of his relatives, including children, who were buying new clothes for Eid-al-Fitr -- the celebration that marks the end of Ramadan on Tuesday.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack. It was the latest in a string of assaults during the holy month for Muslims, a period of fasting and prayer, and also a time when jihadists launch operations against those they regard as their enemies.

A second bomb exploded Sunday at an outdoor market in the Shaab neighborhood of southeastern Baghdad, killing one person and wounding five others, police said.

Both Baghdad strikes are a sign of the Sunni-Shiite tension in the Muslim world. Sunni-dominated ISIS claimed it was targeting Shiite neighborhoods. Karrada and Shaab are predominately Shiite neighborhoods.

As Baghdad Protests Mount, Attack on Shiite Shrine Kills 26

Protests and anger over the security situation in Iraq mounted Thursday at the site of a massive truck bombing by the Islamic State group earlier this week in Baghdad that killed scores as the death toll continued to rise and a separate attack north of Baghdad killed dozens more.

The Baghdad attack last Sunday — the deadliest attack in Iraq since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion — has stoked public unrest and spurred Iraqi officials to announce a number of new security measures. However, smaller scale bombings and attacks have persisted in the days that followed.

Late on Thursday night an attack carried out by multiple suicide bombers and gunmen on a Shiite shrine in Balad north of Baghdad killed 26 and wounded 52, according to Iraqi police and hospital officials.

Earlier on Thursday, Iraqi hospital and police officials said their death toll from Sunday's Baghdad attack now stood at 186, with around 20 people still missing, as more remains were recovered from the rubble.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they are not authorized to talk to the media.

However, Ahmad Roudaini, from the Health Ministry's media office, said the ministry's death toll is 292.

The discrepancies in the numbers could not immediately be reconciled. Many of those killed have had to be identified with DNA-testing because their bodies were burned beyond recognition.

On Thursday evening, a crowd of angry friends and family members of the victims tried to push into one of the buildings hit in the truck bombing but civilian volunteers held them back.

Death toll from Baghdad blast rises to 292: minister

The massive suicide bombing in central Baghdad has now become the deadliest attack in Iraq since the 2003 US-led invasion, with the death toll reaching 250, according to the health ministry, Reuters reported.

The move comes two days after a deadly car-bomb attack - claimed by the Daesh terrorist group - struck a busy shopping district in Baghdad, claiming more than 200 lives.

"This was clearly a devastating attack and a painful reminder of the lethal capabilities of Isil", Cook said, using an acronym for the IS group.

And some expressed anger at the government, blaming it for the attack.

Mahmud, who lost six relatives in the bombing, said the family had brought what he believes are ashes of the victims to the morgue.

The staggering figure, announced on Tuesday, comes as Iraqis mourn ahead of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, under the pall of one the worst bombings in 13 years of war.

Police Major General Talib Khalil Rahi said the bomber's minibus had been loaded with plastic explosives and ammonium nitrate.

At least half a dozen other buildings along the street are black with soot, the result of the original blast and a fire that raged for 12 hours following the explosion.

Ghabban criticised the security system as fundamentally flawed and saying he could no longer accept responsibility for the consequences, calling for a series of changes that would ultimately increase the ministry's power.

Ghabban handed authority to his deputy, until Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi makes a decision on who will replace him.

Analysts say this demonstration of the terror group's capacity to strike in the heart of the capital may force a delay of the long-awaited government push to retake the northern metropolis of Mosul, the largest city under ISIS control.

In response to the battlefield setbacks, including the recent loss of the western city of Falluja, the militants have stepped up their attacks on civilians.

    84 killed in Nice France

'Dozens' dead after truck ploughed into a crowd at a Bastille Day celebration in Nice

The Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi has said that dozens of people have died after a truck reportedly ploughed into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in southern France. The apparent attack took place on the side of a road close to the Promenade des Anglais.

Images from the scene posted on social media show revellers fleeing the scene and some lying on the floor stricken by the vehicle. The country is still under a State of Emergency after the Islamic State (Isis) Paris terror attacks in November 2015

There are also reports of gunshots being heard during the incident – although this cannot be confirmed as many fireworks were also part of the bank holiday celebrations.

Christian Estrosi, the President of the Regional Council of Provence-Alpes-Cote dAzur said on Twitter, translated from French: "Dear Nice, the driver of a truck appears to have killed dozens of people. For the moment, stay at home. More info to come."

Both Daesh (Isis) and al-Qaeda have used vehicles to attack civilians although it is not confirmed that this was indeed a terrorist incident. Bastille Day, celebrated every 14th July marks the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris during the French Revolution of 1789.

Nice terror attack: Truck driver who killed 84 named as 'loner' French-Tunisian criminal who 'became depressed' when wife left him as police question estranged spouse

A terrorist who used a hired lorry to kill at least 84 people in a rampage during Bastille Day celebrations in Nice has been named as a convicted criminal well known to the police for armed attacks.

Tunisian-born Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel - described as a "weird loner" who "became depressed" when his wife left him - was a French passport holder who lived in the Riviera city and was regularly in trouble with the law.

The 31-year-old delivery driver's wife is this afternoon in police custody as officers question her about his alleged Islamist links. Bouhlel was reportedly not on a terrorist watch list and investigators are seeking to establish his motives - and are also looking for possible accomplices.

At least 10 children are among the dead following the "cowardly and barbaric" atrocity that left several British national among the many injured.

Officials feared the death toll will rise, as dramatic footage emerged of the mass killer being shot dead by police in the cab of his truck after unleashing carnage on the 30,000-strong crowd.

As hundreds remained in hospital - including 50 fighting for their lives in intensive care - investigators have been searching the home of Bouhlel in the Abattoirs area of Nice and carried out a controlled explosion on a white box van nearby.

Investigating sources said Bouhlel's last appearance in a criminal court was as recently as March, when he was found guilty of violent contact. Despite this, he had no known links with terrorism and was not under surveillance.

Neighbours described him as a "very weird loner" and father of three who had recently become estranged from his wife and had become depressed following the breakdown of his marriage.

A woman living in the same shabby apartment block as Bouhel today told how he "seemed very weird". She told The Telegraph: "He lived alone. He said very little to anyone and wasn’t very polite. He wouldn’t hold the door open for you."

Bouhel left his French identity card in the hired 19-tonne lorry used to murder dozens of people on Thursday night.

His truck had zigzagged through crowds massing on the Promenade des Anglais, killing anyone he could.

After being stopped by armed police, who fired bullets into the lorry’s windscreen, he exchanged fire with officers using a 7.65 pistol before being shot dead.

"He was known to the police for violence, and using weapons, but had no direct links with terrorism," said an investigating source. "His identity car was found in the lorry. He had French and Tunisian nationality."

A search of the vehicle uncovered a pistol, a larger gun, and a number of fake weapons and grenades.

The fact that the killer was known to the authorities will be of grave concern to those trying to prevent terrorist attacks in France.

A recent Paris parliamentary investigation into last year’s attacks identified multiple failings by France’s intelligence agencies.

New Prime Minister Theresa May said Britain must redouble its efforts to defeat "brutal" terrorist "murderers" after the "horrifying" attack, as she called a meeting of senior officials in the Government's emergency Cobra committee.

As the United Nations issued a statement calling the latest "cowardly and barbaric", French Prime Minister Manuel Valls tweeted: "The city of Nice has been hit by terrorism on the day of our national holiday. Immense pain, the country is in mourning. The French will face it."

President Francois Hollande meanwhile spoke of a "monstrosity", and said soldiers would be deployed to support gendarmes and police, particularly at the country’s borders.

A State of Emergency imposed last year after almost 150 people were killed during attacks on Paris will be extended to July 26, Mr Hollande added.

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said: "We are at war with terrorists who want to strike us at any cost and who are extremely violent."

Tony Molina, an American witness to the attack, said: "There was still a crowd of people and then you just see this big white panel truck, I couldn’t see the driver, but it just kept going at different angles from left to right at 25 to 30 miles and hour.

"People were screaming and running. I work in homicide and I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s unbelievable."

The Promenade Anglais was packed on what is traditionally the biggest public holiday in France, when the man struck soon after 10.30pm local time (21:30 BST)

The white lorry mounted the pavement repeatedly at approximately 40mph and steered directly towards men, women, and children, some of whom were still dressed for the beach.

"People went down like ninepins," a man who runs Le Queenie restaurant on the seafront told France Info radio.

British holidaymaker Esther Serwah, 59, was staying in a hotel a short walk from the scene. She said she had been on her way to the Promenade des Anglais for dinner with her daughters when people started screaming at her.

Mrs Serwah, from Surrey, said: "I was just walking to the Promenade and then I saw everybody running and I just didn’t know what was going on. People were screaming at me in French but I didn’t understand.

"Some people were lying on the streets dead and people were running over the bodies. Everybody was saying it’s a terrorist attack. It’s just horrible, horrible, horrible. I’m in shock. I’m still shaking."

I am not in favor of truck control, but nobody needs an "assault truck" to get coffee at 7/11.

No where in the Constitution does it say the right to keep and drive trucks. I am so sick of hearing truck fanatics say: "Trucks don't kill people, people kill people."

If that freak didn't have a truck, he would've knocked over a few people and that would've been it.

5 killed, 7 injured in Almaty, Kazakhstan terrorist attack on police station

At least five people were killed and seven injured in a suspected Islamist attack on a police station in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city. President Nursultan Nazarbaev has announced that it was a terror act.

The figure was announced by the city’s counterterrorism headquarters. Authorities had reported earlier that three policemen and one civilian had been killed in the attack. The three murdered police officers, who were 24, 28 and 42-year old, were all reportedly married with children.

A source at Almaty hospital told Reuters that six people had been killed in the shootout, while eight people were hospitalized, most of them in serious or critical condition.

It was initially reported that a group of people had attacked a police station in Almaty, triggering a manhunt in the city.

Two suspects have been detained. A weapon stolen from a killed police officer was reportedly found on one of them.

The suspected gunman, 26-year-old Ruslan Kulikbayev, was close to Salafis, an ultra-conservative school of Islam that he joined while in prison, the country’s National Security Committee chief said at a Security Council meeting on Monday. Kulikbayev had served two prison sentences, one for robbery in 2010 and another for illegal arms possession in 2012.

“He became affiliated with Salafis in prison, we are now seeing into the matter,” Zhumakanov said.

The second suspect detained by police turned out to be a taxi driver who drove Kulikbayev around the city, the defense minister said at the same meeting. The driver was forced to help the gunman and ran away at the earliest opportunity, he added.

“We detained him later,” the minister said.

As the events began to develop, witnesses reported on social networks that “an unknown person wearing black was shooting with assault rifle at police, trying to stop [their] car, and then ran in the eastern direction.”
