1 San Diego officer shot and killed, another in surgery

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities say one of the two police officers who were shot in a San Diego neighborhood has died, and a suspect is in custody.

Police Chief Shelly Zimmerman said the two officers, both members of the department’s gang unit, reported that they were making a stop shortly before 11 p.m. Almost immediately afterward, they called for assistance.

Other officers in the area arrived quickly and found that both officers had been shot, Zimmerman said.

One of the officers suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the the upper body, Zimmerman said. He was placed in a squad car and rushed to the hospital, where he died, she said.

The other officer was undergoing surgery and police are hopeful that he will survive, according to the chief.

The paper says police flooded the area in search of suspects, while residents were urged to stay inside.

Police spokesmen did not immediately return calls for further comment, but the department says in a Twitter posting that one suspect was in custody and other possible suspects were being sought.

The shooting comes with law officers around the country on alert following the killing of officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, this month.

SDPD officer killed and second wounded in Southcrest shooting identified

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Two San Diego police officers were shot — one fatally — after a late-night stop turned into a gunfight, triggering a manhunt that led to the capture of one wounded suspect in a ravine and an hours-long SWAT standoff Friday that ended after officers detained a second man who may have been involved.

The shooting came as departments around the country are on high alert following the killing of officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, this month. San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said it was unknown whether the San Diego attack was premeditated.

The chain of events unfolded over more than 12 hours in a blue-collar area of southeastern San Diego with modest single-story homes and streets lined with palm trees.

It started about 11 p.m. Thursday when two veteran gang unit officers in bulletproof vests stopped a person on a street. Almost immediately a shootout ensued and the officers called for backup.

Authorities initially said the officers made a traffic stop involving a motorist, but clarified later that they were still trying to determine whether it was a traffic stop or a stop to check out a pedestrian.

"It happened extremely quickly," Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said. "From the information that was put out that a stop was being made to that the officers called for emergency cover to when the other officers arrived on scene, we're talking very, very quickly. Seconds to a minute or so."

Jonathan DeGuzman, a 16-year veteran of the force who was married with two children, suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The 43-year-old died at Scripps Mercy Hospital after doctors' efforts to save him failed.
Wade Irwin, 32, underwent surgery after being shot and was expected to survive, Zimmerman said. His wife was at his side during surgery.

Police swarmed the neighborhood where the shootout happened and quickly captured 52-year-old Jesse Gomez in a nearby ravine, Zimmerman said. He was in critical condition Friday with a gunshot wound but was expected to survive. Police gave no further information about Gomez or his role in the shootout except to say he was a suspect.

During the search for a second man described as a "potential" suspect, residents were ordered to stay in their homes throughout the night as San Diego police and officers from other law enforcement agencies scoured yards, streets and alleys. A helicopter hovered over the neighborhood.

About nine hours after the shootout, heavily armed officers surrounded a house about a half-mile (about 1 kilometer) away, one of them using a loudspeaker to urge a man to surrender. Authorities also detonated several devices at the scene to draw him out and used tools to break windows and pound on the roof.

Then, about a dozen heavily armed SWAT officers raced another house about two blocks away, positioning an armored truck and robots outside. The possible suspect wasn't there either.

Zimmerman said late Friday afternoon that officers arrested a man in the area on an unrelated warrant.

She said police were investigating to see whether 41-year-old Marcus Antonio Cassani had any role in the police shootings.

After visiting Irwin at UC San Diego Medical Center early Friday, Zimmerman told reporters that the officer's prospects for recovery were good. The nine-year veteran of the force had just joined the gang unit in June.

"It's a little bit of a long haul until he makes a full recovery, but the good news is that he is going to survive and he is going to recover," she said.

Earlier, Zimmerman told reporters she knew DeGuzman well.

"I can tell you he is a loving, caring husband, father. Talked about his family all the time," Zimmerman said. "I know him, and this is gut-wrenching. He cared. He came to work every single day wanting to just make a positive difference in the lives of our community and that's why he lost his life."

DeGuzman received the purple heart in 2003 after he was stabbed by a man he had stopped for speeding. The man was convicted of attempted murder on a peace officer in 2004.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer denounced the shootings.

"I ask all San Diegans and all people across our nation to join together in support of our officers who courageously protect our communities," he said. "We need them and they need us."

San Diego police view body-camera footage in officer killing

    By Elliot Spagat
    The Associated Press

SAN DIEGO - Investigators viewed body-camera footage to learn how one San Diego police officer was killed and another seriously injured in a gunbattle during a traffic stop. But the city's police chief said that she has yet to determine if the shooting was similar to targeted, premeditated attacks on police in other parts of the country.

Chief Shelley Zimmerman and Mayor Kevin Faulconer visited briefly with the wounded officer, 32-year-old Wade Irwin, at the hospital on Saturday morning, but investigators were still unable to interview him after surgery. Zimmerman reiterated that Irwin was expected to fully recover, and Faulconer said the nine-year veteran of the force "looked good, all things considered."

Zimmerman didn't say what the police body camera footage showed and declined to comment on other aspects of the investigation, saying lots of ballistics, forensics and other evidence had to be processed. She stopped short of tying the shooting to killings of officers this month in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which have put police departments on high alert across the country.

"Until more information becomes available, we're not going to tie it to anything else," Zimmerman said at a news conference at UC San Diego Medical Center, where Irwin is recovering. "I want to be clear. We're not making any correlation. We just don't know yet."

The officers, members of an anti-gang unit, were uniformed, wore bulletproof vests and drove a marked car. Zimmerman said Saturday that it was still unclear if they stopped for pedestrians or motorists in the blue-collar neighborhood of southeastern San Diego.

The mayor and police chief also visited Saturday with the wife and two children of Jonathan DeGuzman, 43, the officer who died in Thursday night's shooting after surviving a stabbing 13 years earlier while on duty. The 16-year veteran of the force had been stabbed in the right arm in 2003 after pulling over a driver for speeding, and he shot the aggressor in the hip after the man tried to stab him again.

Zimmerman, who worked with DeGuzman before she was elevated to chief in 2014, said she informed DeGuzman's wife 13 years ago that he survived the stabbing. DeGuzman received the department's purple heart for valor in that traffic stop.

"I was able to at that time tell his wife that he was going to be OK and, as I was driving over there that night, I knew I was going to have to make the notification that he was not going to be OK, he was not coming home, and nothing prepares you for that," Zimmerman said.

Jesse Gomez, 52, was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after he was found in a ravine almost immediately after the shooting, suffering from a wound to the chest. He is expected to survive.

Police have given no further information about Gomez or a man they describe as a second "potential suspect," Marcus Cassani, who was arrested Friday on an unrelated warrant after a massive search that included SWAT officers swarming around two San Diego houses. Police have yet to definitively link Cassani, 41, to Thursday's shooting, Zimmerman said Saturday.

An Anaheim, California, man who identified himself as Cassani's father on Saturday handed the phone to his daughter, who said it was ongoing investigation and that the family had nothing more to say. She didn't identify herself further and hung up.

San Diego man charged for murder of police officer

SAN DIEGO -- A San Diego man was charged Tuesday with murder and attempted murder in the shootings of two San Diego police officers, and prosecutors revealed he opened fire immediately after being asked if he lived in the area where he was walking.

Jesse Gomez pleaded not guilty in an arraignment held at the hospital as he recovered from wounds sustained in the gun battle with police.

About 11 p.m. Thursday, Gomez and another man had been walking and split up when they saw the officers, Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon said at a news conference. The two officers pulled up to Gomez, and Officer Wade Irwin got out and asked if he lived in the area.

Gomez "answered with gunfire," Runyon said.

He shot Irwin, who survived, then fired in the car where Officer Jonathan DeGuzman sat with his seatbelt still on, Runyon said. DeGuzman was hit four times and killed.

Gomez is eligible for the death penalty, but prosecutors have not decided whether to seek it.

Neither police nor prosecutors would say anything about a motive for the shooting.

Gomez was found in a ravine shortly after the shootings when officers followed a trail of blood, authorities said.

DeGuzman, 43, died after being rushed to a hospital. Irwin, 32, is recovering from his wounds at a hospital.

A second man was arrested Friday on an unrelated search warrant, but he has been released, authorities said.

Investigators have reviewed body camera footage
, though they said at Tuesday's news conference that Irwin's camera was not turned on until after he was shot.

Officials have released little information about Gomez. The construction worker has a criminal record stretching back to 1983, including a conviction for auto theft and drunken driving. Prosecutors said he used a cane to seize a car from another driver in 1983. He was convicted of firearm charges in 1992, and again in 2002, for carrying firearms while under the influence of methamphetamine.

Gomez grew up in a modest house in southeastern San Diego, about a half-mile from where the shooting occurred.

Real estate broker Leonard A. Marquez wrote in a 2002 letter to a judge that Gomez had worked for him for eight years. Marquez described him as "a multi-talented worker who is considered to be a great asset to all construction projects."

Gomez's son, Daniel Gomez, told The San Diego Union-Tribune that he believes his father is innocent. He said he is a good father to his three sons and dedicated grandfather to his 9-year-old granddaughter.

"I know he's been in trouble, like when I was a baby, but after that nothing," Daniel Gomez told the newspaper. "It's like he realized he had his kids in his life and he had to take care of them, so that's what he did. He stayed out of trouble and was about his family."

A memorial service will be held Thursday and a public funeral Mass on Friday for DeGuzman.

Hundreds attend funeral for slain SDPD Officer Jonathan De Guzman

    By Debbi Baker
    The San Diego Union-Tribune

Flowers lined the entrance Thursday to Corpus Christi Catholic Church where friends, family, fellow law enforcement officers and members of the public gathered in Bonita for the first of two memorial services to honor slain San Diego police officer Jonathan De Guzman.

The church, which holds 1,200 people, was filled to capacity for the 90 minute service which began at 11 a.m. after De Guzman's casket was escorted into the church carried by pallbearers including the officer's 17-year-old son.

Church pastor Father Efrain Bautista said the service was a time to comfort and console the officer's grieving family he described as very spiritual and grounded in their Catholic faith.

"This is an opportunity for us as a church to come together and to pray, to support the family, to be together with the widow of Officer De Guzman, but also to be able to come together as a community of faith to pray for peace and for those who have given their lives in service for their country and community," Bautista said.

Chief Shelley Zimmerman spoke at the service where she went through De Guzman's career, said Aida Bustos, spokeswoman for the Diocese of San Diego.

The chief talked about how she had to call his family several years ago after De Guzman had been stabbed in a traffic stop. She told the crowd that the first thing she said to his wife that day was that "JD was going to be just fine."

Zimmerman then recounted how this time, it was so very different. She said that when she was driving to see De Guzman's family she so wished could say those same words again.

The chief then stopped and wiped away a tear.

She also had a message for De Guzman's children. "JD worked really hard for you so you could live out your dreams," she said directly to De Guzman's son Jed.

She then turned to his 11-year-old daughter Amira. "Sweet Amira, how he loved you," Zimmerman said.

The veteran officer, who had been on the force for 16 years, was gunned down Thursday night in Southcrest in a shooting that also wounded his partner Officer Wade Irwin.

De Guzman, who was a member of the department’s gang suppression unit, was shot point blank and Irwin was wounded when they stopped to talk to two pedestrians.

Irwin got out of the car and asked one of the men a question and was met with immediate gunfire, prosecutors said. A bullet hit him in the throat.

The shooter then walked to the open passenger side door of the car and opened fire on De Guzman, hitting him several times.

De Guzman died at a hospital a short time later.

Irwin returned fire and struck the shooter, who ran away and was later found unconscious in a ravine and arrested, according to prosecutors.

Jesse Michael Gomez, 53, a construction worker with a long criminal history, has since been charged with murder and attempted murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He pleaded not guilty Tuesday from his hospital bed at UCSD Medical Center.

The priest who officiated the service told the mourners that he "had it on good authority" that De Guzman was thinking about retiring "sooner than later." He wanted to return to his home country of the Philippines where he hoped to get a government position so that he could serve his people.

The officer emigrated to the United States when he was 20 years old, Bustos said.

Outside the church one woman was seen hugging police officers. "You guys are so great," she said to one.

Another man, a former L.A. County sheriff's deputy, stood across the street holding a sign that said "Police lives matter. Gangsters not so much." Fred Faul of Oceanside, 81, said he just wanted to show his support for the family. "So many officers have been killed. I'm sick of it," he said. "Somebody has to stand and support the police."

The memorial service for De Guzman will take place Friday at 11 a.m. at the Shadow Mountain Community Church in El Cajon. It is expected to draw hundreds of law enforcement officers from around the country and Governor Jerry Brown is scheduled to attend.

It will be preceded by a procession of police officers beginning at Qualcomm Stadium at 9 a.m. The motorcade will travel east on Friars Road to Interstate 15 south to Interstate 8 east to Greenfield Drive.

De Guzman will be buried at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita in a private ceremony.

Accused killer of San Diego police officer to appear in court June 2

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) — A status conference has been scheduled June 2 for Jesse Michael Gomez, who is accused of fatally shooting San Diego police Officer Jonathan "J.D.'' De Guzman and wounding Officer Wade Irwin during a stop last year.

De Guzman was shot five times during a late-night pedestrian stop in southeast San Diego on July 28. The 16-year veteran of the force later died at Scripps Mercy Hospital.

De Guzman's gang-unit partner, Officer Irwin, was also wounded but returned fire, critically wounding their alleged assailant.

Gomez, 56, recovered and has remained in jailed on $5 million bail while awaiting trial in the case. A special-circumstance allegation of murder of a police officer makes Gomez eligible for the death penalty if convicted.

A South Bay post office was recently renamed in honor of the fallen officer; the Jonathan "J.D." De Guzman Post Office Building was dedicated during a March 6 ceremony attended by De Guzman's family members, Officer Irwin and many community members.

Prosecutors will seek death penalty against man charged in police shooting

A man accused of fatally shooting San Diego police Officer Jonathan “J.D.” DeGuzman and wounding his partner last year in Southcrest will face the death penalty if convicted, a prosecutor said Friday.

Jesse Michael Gomez, 56, is charged with murder, attempted murder and a special-circumstance allegation of murder of a police officer.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Michael Smyth granted a prosecution request to change the defendant's bail status from $5 million to no bail.

A preliminary hearing is tentatively set for Feb. 5.

Gomez is accused of shooting DeGuzman and Officer Wade Irwin — two gang suppression unit officers — about 11 p.m. on July 28, 2016, when they tried to detain him on Acadia Grove Way.

Patrol personnel responding to the officers' call for backup found them suffering from gunshot wounds to their upper bodies.

DeGuzman, a 16-year veteran with the San Diego Police Department, was pronounced dead after being rushed to a hospital.

Gomez was taken into custody in a ravine off South 38th Street, a short distance from the scene of the shooting. He was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his upper body.

District Attorney wants death for cop killer

    By Neal Putnam
    Star-News

The death penalty is being sought by the District Attorney’s office against a man charged with killing a San Diego Police officer who lived in Chula Vista and for whom the Eastlake post office is named.

Officer Jonathan “J.D.” De Guzman, 43, was shot to death on July 28, 2016, and his partner Wade Irwin was wounded in the Southcrest area of San Diego following an 11 p.m. traffic stop.

De Guzman’s name was engraved in Oct., 2016 on a police officers’ memorial in Chula Vista. He lived in Chula Vista with his wife and two children. A dedication ceremony took place in March, 2017 at the Eastlake post office at 830 Kuhn Drive. His funeral mass was at a Bonita church.

Murder and a special circumstances charges were filed against Jesse Michael Gomez, 57, which could lead to his execution if he is convicted of first-degree murder and killing an officer during the performance of his duties. He is also charged with attempted murder of Irwin, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Gomez appeared Feb. 5 before San Diego Superior Court Judge Michael Smyth and his preliminary hearing was again delayed until June 18. Deputy DA Michael Runyon confirmed his office is seeking the death penalty and Gomez’s attorneys were informed of the decision in Dec., 2017.

De Guzman was a 16-year veteran with San Diego Police and he and his partner were shot allegedly after they tried to detain Gomez. Irwin shot Gomez and he was hospitalized with a wound to his upper body.

De Guzman has a memorial with photos on findagrave.com.

Gomez has repeatedly waived the right to have a speedy preliminary hearing. It is estimated the hearing will take a week and a judge is expected to order a murder trial. Gomez has pleaded not guilty and remains in jail. without bail.

Hearing held for man accused of killing San Diego police Officer Jonathan De Guzman

A San Diego police officer who survived a shooting that took the life of his partner testified today that the assailant shot him in the throat without provocation before turning the gun on his colleague, prompting him to return fire.

Officer Wade Irwin took the stand as preliminary hearing testimony got underway to determine whether there is enough evidence to warrant a trial for Jesse Michael Gomez, who is charged with murder and attempted murder, with a special circumstance allegation of murder of a police officer.

The 58-year-old defendant, who is being held without bail, could face the death penalty if convicted. Gomez is accused of shooting Irwin and fellow gang-unit Officer Jonathan "J.D.'' DeGuzman about 11 p.m. on July 28, 2016, when they tried to detain him in the 3700 block of Acacia Grove Way.

DeGuzman, a 16-year SDPD veteran, was pronounced dead after being rushed to a hospital. Gomez was taken into custody in a ravine off South 38th Street, a short distance from the scene, and was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Irwin testified that as he and DeGuzman were patrolling the area, they saw 2 men split up and start walking along the north and south sidewalks of Acacia Grove Way. Irwin said he believed the man on the south side -- who he later learned was Gomez -- was someone else he had previously arrested. DeGuzman stopped the car and Irwin got out of the passenger side, leaving the door open, he said.

Irwin then asked Gomez, "Hey, do you live in the area?'' and Gomez "almost immediately'' shot him, the witness testified. The officer said Gomez then approached the open passenger door of the patrol car and fired into the vehicle, where DeGuzman was sitting.

After being shot, Irwin said he fell into the side of the patrol car and was sitting up near the rear tire. He said he had "a lot of blood'' in his throat and it was hard to breathe.

"I believed (Gomez) was going to execute me if he saw I was still alive,'' Irwin testified. He said that after Gomez shot his partner, he drew his gun and fired 3 to 4 times on the shooter, who was running eastbound.

Irwin testified that he was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment of a collapsed lung, paralysis to his right diaphragm and vocal cords, facial numbness and nerve damage.

Irwin said he remained in the hospital for 23 days and still suffers from the lingering effects of the injuries.

While in the hospital, he was shown photographic lineups that included Gomez and the man he originally believed Gomez to be. He testified that he identified Gomez as the shooter and that the other man was not at the scene or involved in the shooting.
