Police inform man that he has already been executed

A Guangzhou man discovered that he had already been executed when he asked police for a document, according to a report from the Guangdong Radio and Television network.

On July 29, the man surnamed Chen was told he could not get a certificate of non-criminal record from the Fuhua police station in Panyu district because he had committed a kidnapping offence in 2001, according to the report.

A document Chen got from the police shows that another man with the same name and ID number had been sentenced to death by a Guangzhou court in 2003, and executed in 2006.

Chen said he had lived a normal life over the past 10 years despite his “execution”, even getting a travel permit to and from Hong Kong and Macau in 2008.

The police rectified the mistakes in Chen’s personal information in their system and in an official notice, and gave him a certificate of non-criminal record last Friday.
