Yust admitted to strangling, hiding bodies of Kara Kopetsky & Jessica Runions per investigators

By Andrew Lynch and Dave D'Marco

CASS COUNTY, Mo. -- The man long-believed to be a killer is now suspected of murder. On Thursday Cass County prosecutors formally charged Kylr Yust with two counts of first degree murder and two counts of abandoning a corpse related to the disappearances and killings of Kara Kopetsky in 2007 and Jessica Runions in 2016.

Runions disappeared after she left a party with him in September 2016. Kopetsky vanished more than 10 years ago after she was last seen walking out of Belton High School.

A decade separated the disappearances, but their remains were found near each other, just a few days apart in April 2017 when a mushroom hunter stumbled upon bones in rural Cass County. Yust has been in jail and charged with burning Runions' car in Jackson County, where he is still in custody.

Court papers show that the prosecutor's case started back on April 28th of 2007 -- days before Kopetsky disappeared. She told police that Yust kidnapped her after they broke up.

A judge granted her request for a restraining order on April 30th, four days before it's believed that she was killed. Kopetsky was just 17 years old when she disappeared, and was last seen leaving Belton High School in May of 2007.

Court records show that over the years investigators tried to crack Yust multiple times.

Between April of 2010 and June of 2012, multiple people who knew him called police saying Yust admitted to choking Kopetsky to death.

Yust was sentenced to federal prison for drug distribution in November of 2013, and put on supervised release on September 2, 2016. That court order reads:

"You shall serve one weekend confined at a facility designated by the Bureau of Prisons. You shall report to the designated facility, as instructed by the probation officer, on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and will be released the following Sunday at 7:00 p.m. You are to pay subsistence as directed."

On September 9, 2016, Runions was reported missing a day after leaving a party with Yust where he was behaving possessive of Runions and acting aggressively towards others according to witnesses. They said Yust was drinking heavily at the party and arguing with Runions.

Police found her burned-out car on September 10. A man who was with Yust that same day told police that he drove Yust to his home in Edwards, Mo., and he was recovering from burns he received setting Runions' SUV on fire. The SUV was found in the area of 95th Street and Blue River Road. That man told police that Yust said he strangled Runions and "she was gone." Yust added that he had dragged her body into the woods.

After he left Yust, that man contacted police and told them everything Yust had said and where he was. Yust was arrested on September 11, investigators noted he had burns to his face, hands and arms, in addition to scratches on his face.

Months later on April 4th, a mushroom hunter contacted police to report that he found the remains of two people in heavy woods near Y Highway and 233rd Street. Investigators used DNA and dental records to identify the remains of Runions and Kopetsky.

Yust is awaiting trial on October 23 in Jackson County for a charge of knowingly burning or exploding related to the torching of Runions' SUV. As court proceedings take place for the murder charges, Yust will be held on a $1 million bond.

Summary of the admissions that Yust made to others about the killings:

    * 4/26/10: A bandmate who was also a roommate of Yust's in 2007 told Belton investigators that Yust said something bad had happened to Kara and he snapped. Yust said he was angry with Kopetsky because she wouldn't love him, and he didn't want her to love someone else.

    * 1/22/11: Someone contacted Belton police and said that Yust told her he choked Kara to death, picked up her body and hid it in the woods.

*2/4/11: The same person reconnects with police and tells a more complete story. She said that Yust described choking Kara, watching her take her last breath. He said he stared at her body before moving it to the woods.

    * 8/19/11: A previous girlfriend of Yust tells Kansas City investigators that he choked her and told her that he had killed his girlfriends before and would not hesitate to kill her too.

    * 6/5/12: Someone told police that in early 2012 Yust told them that he had choked Kara out, looked at her body before taking her to the woods. Yust further described they were having relationship problems and had a physical struggle before he killed her.

    * 9/2015: An investigator confronts Yust at a correctional facility in Oklahoma about lying regarding Kopetsky's disappearance. Yust refuses to talk. He had been serving a federal sentence for distributing a controlled substance, he was sentenced to 45 months in November of 2013, and put on supervised release on September 2, 2016.

    * 3/28/16: Cell inmate of Yust in Oklahoma says that Yust asked him for an alibi after the police interview in September of 2015. The inmate said Yust admitted that he had killed Kopetsky by choking her and then disposed of her body.

    * 9/10/2016: Man contacts Belton police and said he was with Yust admitted that he strangled and killed Runions. Yust also told that witness he had dragged her body into and undisclosed wooded area, but couldn't drag her very far.

*10/5/2016: Belton police interview a former roommate, who said about 3-and-a-half years earlier Yust told him that he killed Kopetsky and no one would ever find the body unless he told them where it was.

Families focused on justice as accused killer Kylr Yust appears in court

    By Shannon O'Brien
    fox4kc.com

HARRISONVILLE, Mo. -- An accused killer charged in the deaths of two metro women faced a judge for the first time on Tuesday. Families of the two victims filled the Cass County court room.

It was a day the families of Kara Kopetsky and Jessica Runions said they've waited a long time to see.

The second floor court room was standing room only, but there were no friends or family there to support Kylr Yust.

The victim's families and friends, however, packed the court room. Jessica Runions' dad, John Runions, had this to say after the hearing:

"Just, I am just ready to get this thing over with."

Yust finally walking in to a court room charged with the murders of Kara Kopetsky and Jessica Runions -- a moment these families have been waiting for since their daughters disappeared: Kopetsky in 2007, and Runions in 2016.

Some family members were crying as they sat in court facing the man they believe killed their children.

Yust answered simple questions from the judge, indicating he understands what he is being charged with and did not flinch when the judge told him the first degree murder charges carry either life in prison without parole, or death.

After the hearing was over, both Kopetsky's parents and Runions' mom, Jamie, left without comment, but Thursday after Yust was charged, they made a clear statement about what is to come.

"Focus is just justice for our girls," Jamie said.

District defender Jeff Martin represented Yust in this hearing, but notified the judge he was giving up the case.

The Public Defender's Office also represents Yust's brother Jessup Carter on charges out of Henry County. Since Carter is listed as a witness in the Yust case, it is a conflict for the Public Defender's Office to also represent Yust.

Martin said due to the nature of this case and the probability that it will become a death penalty case, his office has contacted the Capital Defender's Office in St. Louis to provide an attorney to represent Yust in the future.

Prosecutor Ben Butler would not say whether or not he would be pursuing the death penalty against Yust, but he has some time to make that decision and notify the court.

Trial for man accused of killing Jessica Runions, Kara Kopetsky to stay in Cass County

    By 41 Action News Staff

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The trial for a man accused of killing two women whose remains were found in 2017 will take place in Cass County, but the jury will come from another jurisdiction.

Defense attorneys for Kylr Yust, who is accused in the deaths of Jessica Runions and Kara Kopetsky, who had argued that the trial should be moved due to the publicity surrounding his case. Late last week, attorneys for both sides agreed that the trial will take place in Cass County but the jury will come from St. Charles County.

The remains of Kopetsky, 17, and Runions, 21, were found in spring 2017 in a field in rural Cass County.

Yust is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of abandoning a corpse. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in June.

A pre-trial conference for Yust is set for Oct. 1, where a trial date could be set.

Kylr Yust, accused of killing two women, has trial date in Cass County murder case

    By Glenn E. Rice
    kansascity.com

The murder trial for Kylr Yust, who is accused of killing two women whose remains were found last year, has been set for the fall of 2019, according to court records.

Yust is charged in Cass County with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of abandonment of a corpse in the deaths of Kara Kopetsky and Jessica Runions. Kopetsky had been missing since 2007 and Runions disappeared in 2016.

In April 2017, a mushroom hunter found human bones in a wooded area south of Belton. Authorities then scoured the area near a quarry and found more remains, including a second skull.

Prosecutors say that at least four people over the years told investigators that Yust confessed to them that he choked Kopetsky — who was last seen leaving Belton High School in May 2007 — until she stopped breathing. Yust allegedly told one friend he discarded his estranged girlfriend’s body in a wooded area.

Yust said to another friend that authorities would never find the body.

On Sept. 8, 2016, Runions was last seen leaving a gathering with Yust, who was a close friend of Runions’ boyfriend.

According to court records, witnesses at the gathering said Yust was “drinking heavily at the party and (he) was acting very possessive towards (Runions) and aggressive towards others at the party.”

Witnesses also told police that Yust and Runions were arguing at the party, according to court records.

Yust’s trial is scheduled for Nov. 4, 2019, in Cass County Circuit Court.

Lawyers for Kylr Yust claim he's not competent to stand trial on charges he murdered two women

    By 41 Action News Staff

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Lawyers for accused double murderer Kylr Yust say he "suffers from a mental disease or defect" and needs treatment before he faces a jury.

Yust's attorneys filed paperwork Aug. 23 in Cass County Circuit Court that say a doctor who examined him found that he "lacks capacity to understand the proceedings against him or to assist in his own defense" and declared Yust "mentally unfit at this time to proceed," according to court records.

Due to that incompetence, Yust's attorneys argue that court proceedings, including his prosecution for the murders of Kara Kopetsky and Jessica Runions, must be suspended.

According to the filing, his attorneys have asked that Yust be "committed to the custody of ... the (Missouri) Department of Mental Health for as long as the mental unfitness endures" or until his case is resolved.

Yust is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of abandoning a corpse in the deaths of Runions and Kopetsky. He is scheduled to go to trial in November.

Family, friends and police spent years searching for Kopetsky after she disappeared in 2007.

Her remains eventually were found in rural Cass County near where Runions' body also was found.

A hearing in the case is set for Sept. 3.

Motion denied: Kylr Yust to stand trial for murder of Kara Kopetsky, Jessica Runions

    By Matt Flener
    KMBC News

HARRISONVILLE, Mo. — The push by Kylr Yust’s attorneys to get two murder charges against him dropped failed Friday in a Cass County courtroom.

Yust’s attorneys argued police did not do enough to investigate other suspects in the disappearance of Kara Kopetsky and Jessica Runions, but Judge William Collins swiftly denied the motion after hearing the motion.

Yust is charged with murdering both girls.

A mushroom hunter found both of their bodies in a Cass County farm field in 2017. Kopetsky went missing in 2007, Runions in 2016. Yust had ties to both women.

In separate documents, Yust's attorneys asked for a dismissal of the case, alleging police failed to investigate several key items of evidence.

They accused a Kansas City, Missouri police officer of tainting evidence and witnesses in the case since he investigated Yust on his off time and away from direct supervision.

Jury selection in St. Charles County, Missouri, is scheduled to begin at the end of March.

As the case stands, jurors will travel from St. Charles to hear arguments in Cass County. A court calendar lists the trial's start date as April 5.

On Thursday, prosecutors agreed to drop two lesser charges – felony counts of abandonment of a corpse – against Yust.

Also, a judge could rule next week on whether to withhold an FBI audio recording from Yust's upcoming trial containing his "recorded confession" for the death of Kara Kopetsky.

Witness testimony in Kylr Yust murder trial focuses on relationship, investigation

Day 2 looks at 2007 death of Kara Kopetsky

    By Hailey Godburn
    KSHB

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jurors heard from 15 witnesses in the double murder trial of Kylr Yust Tuesday, the first of whom was an alleged victim's mother.

Yust is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the 2007 death of Kara Kopetsky and the 2016 death of Jessica Runions.

Tuesday's witnesses were largely involved in the Kopetsky case. Her mother, Rhonda Beckford, was first to take the witness stand.

Beckford provided background information about Kopetsky and Yust's relationship, and read a poem her daughter wrote about him.

"I want to go back but we have seen too much bad... Pressing charges on the one I love, scared of the person I used to love... I'm through," Beckford read.

Several of Kopetsky's friends were called to the stand Tuesday and also talked about the relationship. Many said they noticed tension, possessiveness and instances of abuse between Kopetsky and Yust.

Some described seeing bruises on Kopetsky's arms and other signs and accounts of abuse.

Multiple friends said they told Kopetsky to leave Yust and report the abuse.

Jurors heard from Amy Clark, who was among the first to report Kopetsky missing.

After an incident involving Yust in the days before Kopetsky's disappearance, Clark said she felt something bad had happened to Kopetsky when none of their friends were able to contact her, prompting Clark to go to the police.

Testimony also focused aspects of the early investigation. Several former and retired members of the Belton Police Department, who were involved in the search for Kopetsky in the days immediately following her disappearance, were called to the stand.

The defense spent quite a bit of time cross examining these witnesses, working to establish holes in the investigation.

They alleged there were leads that were not adequately investigated in 2007, including a tip that Kopetsky had been seen at a local QuikTrip.

The defense also alleged a Belton detective didn't do enough to verify Yust's whereabouts on the day of Kopetsky's disappearance, which would provide him an alibi.

Judge William Collins ended Tuesday's session just after 4:30 p.m. Court will reconvene at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Kylr Yust found guilty in deaths of Kara Kopetsky, Jessica Runions

    Sentencing phase will begin Friday

    By Matt Flener
    KMBC Kansas City

HARRISONVILLE, Mo. — The families of Kara Kopetsky and Jessica Runions received news they have waited years to hear: Kylr Yust is a convicted murderer.

A St. Charles County jury found Yust guilty on count one of voluntary manslaughter in the death of Kara Kopetsky and guilty on count two of murder in the second degree in the death of Jessica Runions.

The women were killed nearly a decade apart.

Jurors deliberated for about 15 hours to reach the verdict.

Yust showed no emotion while he stood as the verdict was read.

On Friday, jurors will get right back to work for the sentencing phase of the trial.

The sentencing for voluntary manslaughter is five to 15 years, and the sentencing for second-degree murder is 10 to 30 years or life in prison. The sentencing will happen from the jury itself, but Judge William Collins can decide if the sentences run concurrently.

Each side will get 20 minutes to make a statement, then witnesses will be called to testify -- likely family members from Kopetsky and Runions and possibly from Yust as well.

The jury will then deliberate and make a sentence recommendation to the judge for each of the guilty verdicts.

Family members of the women did not say anything about the verdict as they left the courthouse escorted by deputies. KMBC's Brian Johnson reported that Runions' mother appeared as if she wanted to talk to the media but she said, "I can't talk."

Cass County prosecutors Ben Butler and Julie Tolle spent a week proving Yust had romantic and abusive relationships with both women.

They also elicited strong testimony from several witnesses about Yust’s alleged confessions to killing Kopetsky, along with his burn injuries after investigators found Runions torched SUV along the side of a road in south Kansas City in 2016.

Kopetsky went missing on May 4, 2007, from Belton High School just days after a restraining order against Yust. Runions was last seen leaving a house party with a drunken Yust on the night of Sept. 8, 2016.

The defense’s case stalled early this week when Judge William Collins would not allow the testimony of several witnesses.

Defense attorneys Sharon Turlington, Matt Vigil and Molly Hastings often struggled to craft a narrative before the jury about alternate suspects since Collins would not allow witness testimony due to relevance or credibility issues.

Even Yust's surprise testimony Wednesday – where he introduced the idea that his half-brother Jessup Carter was the real killer in both cases – wasn’t enough to keep him from being convicted.

Yust’s defense attorneys said several times during the trial they are leaving the door open for an appeal.

Yust appeared to listen intently during the trial, often dressed in a suit and tie while wearing a mask. The families of Kara Kopetsky and Jessica Runions sat directly behind him in court every day.

Jury Recommends Life In Prison For Kylr Yust, Convicted Of Killing Two Kansas City-Area Women

Jurors have recommended the maximum sentences for his convictions in the deaths of Jessica Runions and Kara Kopetsky.

    By Jodi Fortino
    KCUR

Jurors have recommended that Kylr Yust receive the maximum sentences for his convictions in the deaths of Jessica Runions and Kara Kopetsky.

The jurors said Yust should serve life in prison for second-degree murder in connection with the death of Runions and 15 years for voluntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Kopetsky.

The jury convicted Yust, 32, of the charges Thursday night following an eight-day-long trial after it had deliberated for 16 hours.

Kopetsky, 17, went missing in May 2007 and Runions, 21, went missing in September 2016. Yust was charged with their killings after their remains were found in a wooded area in Cass County.

Jurors were selected from across the state in St. Charles County because of local publicity about the case.

Their sentencing recommendations came after a morning of emotional testimony at the Cass County Courthouse by the two women’s families.

“We’re just grateful to be where we are today, because there were days we didn’t know if our girls were ever going to be found. We’re just so grateful that they were found, and we have them back now,” Rhonda Beckford, Kopetsky’s mother, said.

Beckford described her daughter as a “carefree, loving, loyal person.” She said she never lost hope that Kopetsky would be found and that when her remains were discovered in a Cass County field in 2017, it was “an answer to a 10-year-long prayer.”

Kopetsky’s father, Mike Kopetsky, talked about the closeness he shared with his daughter during her teenage years. He said she would often call him at night and wake him up just to talk.

“She was very open, very brutally open, but that’s what made her great,” he said.

Both parents testified that Kopetsky was quick to forgive others and that it was her very forgiving nature that led to her death.

Kopetsky’s mother asked for the maximum sentence after the jury found him guilty of a lesser charge than the original first-degree murder charge.

“I don’t really feel like justice was served where Kara’s concerned,” she said.

Through tears, Beckford said she believed Yust “will do it again, given the chance.”

Jessica Runions’ mother said she hoped jurors would consider both families when making their recommendations.

"If a person does stuff, they're gonna do it again," Jamie Runions said.

She told the jury that when she was told Yust was the last one seen with her daughter in 2016, she “was scared to death."

Jessica Runions was a loving sister, her mother told the jury. She tearfully shared several pictures of her daughter, including a picture of her at Thanksgiving before she went missing.

“She was a beautiful soul, and she was my best friend,” said Runions’ sister Megan Runions, sobbing on the witness stand.

John Runions, Jessica Runions’ father, told jurors he’ll never get the chance to walk his daughter down the aisle

“She was in the prime of her life. She was 21 years old. She had her whole life ahead of her,” he said.

Defense lawyers called several witnesses to plead for leniency. Several said they did not believe he was the type of person who could have committed the crimes of which he was convicted.

Yust’s childhood neighbors testified that his mother was absent and his father lacked any responsibilities while Yust was growing up.

A childhood friend, identified only as L.W., said Yust told him when he was 8 years old that his father was abusing him.

Ciara West, who has known Yust since she was 15, said she was shocked when she heard he was charged.

“I didn’t ever for a second believe that at all. I’ve never seen him raise his voice,” said West.

“He has a chance to be on the other side of the sentence,” defense lawyer Molly Hastings told the jury. “Despite popular opinion, Kylr Yust is worth something.”

But Cass County Prosecutor Ben Butler told jurors that Yust should receive the maximum sentences for his convictions.

Formal sentencing is set for June 7, 2021. Judge William Collins will decide whether to adopt the jury’s recommendations and if the sentences should run concurrently or consecutively.
