Rodney Lee Jones Sentenced to LWOP in 2008 AR Murder of Orzonia Fischer

Rodney Lee Jones was convicted at approximately midnight of capital murder

The State, represented by Twentieth Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Marcus Vaden, presented convincing evidence that Jones killed his ex wife Orzonia Fischer.

The defense had tried to argue the combination of medications and Jones' mental state caused his actions; however, the jury did not accept that argument. The jury concentrated on the fact that Jones traveled three states with the purpose of shooting his former wife.

He completed this act by shooting her in the back with a 30.30 rifle as she cut her husband's hair in their home. Arguments concerning Jones' sentence will begin this morning.

It is anticipated that the jurors may begin deliberations to impose the death penalty at the Van Buren county courthouse in Clinton as early as 11:00 this morning.

Orzonia Fischer's kids live with their grandmother, Edna Rogers

The murder trial for Rodney Lee Jones lasted a week; it ended Saturday with Jones spared from execution. He faces life without parole for the 2008 murder of his ex-wife. The trial took place in Clinton where the victim, 33-year-old Orzonia Fischer lived with their three kids.

Jones and his wife separated in 2007 and the divorce was final on Valentines of 2008. Jones moved to Colorado, Fischer kept the kids in Clinton and remarried. Just when family members thought both had moved on, Jones traveled to Arkansas with the intention to kill his ex-wife.

Edna Rogers made a memorial garden with a mailbox in her front yard so her grandkids can send letters to their mom in heaven.

Rogers says, "The way she use to laugh and cut up, the phone calls, she loved to stay home with her kids. That still hurts. I'm sure it's going to hurt for a while."

Rogers daughter Orzonia Fischer was killed on the night of September 5th 2008, while cutting her husbands hair. They were married for three-months.

Rogers received the call and rushed to the house to find her only child lifeless in the ambulance. She recalls, "They said she was shot in middle of the back and from what understand she died within about 60-seconds."

Her kids, now 5, 9 and 11 were home. One child saw his mom covered in blood. After talking to witnesses on the scene, Rogers says she knew who did it, "It was premeditated, and he decided to drive the mileage."

Thursday, the prosecution rested their case explaining Jones traveled from Colorado to Van Buren County with the rifle he received as a wedding gift eight years earlier. He then approached the house he once shared with Fischer, put a scope on the gun and pulled the trigger.

Rogers adds, "I honestly think he thought he was going to get away with it."

Jurors heard testimony from the defendant's mother who said her son confessed he killed Fischer. The gun was recovered in Kansas and matched Fischer's wounds. Saturday afternoon the jury sentenced Jones to life in prison, Rogers broke the news to her grandkids. She told them, "Daddy is going to be in jail or in prison for the rest of his life and he won't be able to get out to hurt you. That's what they were afraid of."

Rogers believes her daughter was killed because Jones wanted half the money for the house they once shared, but it had not sold. Eleven months after Fischer's death family members were still arguing over the house, but it burned down.

Rogers had to quit her job as a trucker to stay home with her grand kids.
