2 face capital murder charges in death of MSU student

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Two of the five suspects being held in the shooting death of 21-year-old Mississippi State University student now face capital murder charges.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports (http://bit.ly/2fHncD1 ) officials upgraded the charges Thursday against 18-year-old Syboris Pippins and 20-year-old Jaylen Barker, both of Columbus. They are now being held on bonds of $2 million each. If convicted, both could face the death penalty.

The charges stem from the early Sunday morning robbery and murder of Joseph Tillman.

Starkville Police Chief Frank Nichols said Tillman, a senior marketing major, was seen interacting with a group of men in the Cotton District. After interacting for several minutes, Nichols says Tillman was robbed and shot.

Police have also charged three others, including a 16-year-old, with accessory after the fact to murder.

Two plead not guilty to murder charges

Two Lowndes County men pleaded not guilty to murder charges relating to the shooting death of Mississippi State University student in 2016 in the Cotton District.

Jaylen Barker, 20, and Syboris Pippins, 18, were charged with capital murder and Barker was charged with possession of a stolen firearm Wednesday interim Oktibbeha County Circuit Clerk Angie McGinnis confirmed. Both were denied bond and are being held in the Oktibbeha County Jail.

Barker’s and Pippins’ plea date is set for Jan. 22 and their trial date is set for Jan. 29 in Oktibbeha County Circuit Court.

Attorney Anthony Farese will represent Barker and attorney Brent Brumley will represent Pippins. Circuit Court Judge Jim Kitchens will judge the cases.

Barker and Pippins were indicted on capital murder charges for the shooting of 21-year-old Joseph Tillman, senior MSU student majoring in marketing, on Nov. 6, 2016, in the Cotton District. Five men from Lowndes County were initially arrested in relation to his death: Jaylen Barker, Syboris Pippins, Jamario Pippins, Tyler Harris and Brandon Sherrod.

Syboris Pippins was arrested on Nov. 8, two days after the other four. A press release stated the U.S. Marshall Task Force apprehended Pippins with a felony warrant.

At a press conference on Nov. 7, 2016, Starkville Chief of Police Frank Nichols said Tillman interacted with the suspects before he was shot.

“From evidence we know Mr. Tillman chased one of the suspects toward Stagger In,” Nichols said. “After several yards, Mr. Tillman returned back to the location where the four suspects were still standing. We know based on evidence, that Mr. Tillman interacted for at least four additional minutes before the shot was fired. Based on evidence, at least one shot was fired and the suspect ran toward Stagger In.”

District Attorney Scott Colom said evidence indicated a robbery occurred before the death of Tillman.

Man pleads guilty to student’s murder, sentenced to life

    By Mina Mooney

COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — A northeast Mississippi man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a Mississippi State University student.

Jaylen Barker on Tuesday pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the Nov. 6, 2016 death of Joseph Tillman.

The 21-year-old Tillman was a senior marketing major from Schlater.

Assistant District Attorney Scott Rogillio tells local news outlets that Barker planned the robbery with friends and asked Tillman to give him change for $100. Rogillio says one person snatched Tillman’s wallet and ran, while Barker shot and killed Tillman.

The 22-year-old Barker had faced the death penalty in a trial scheduled for May. The trial had been moved to Union County because of pretrial publicity.

“Somebody stated under oath that they did it knowing they were going to have to spend at least the next 43 years in prison, if not the rest of their lives,” District Attorney Scott Colom said in a news conference. “That’s why we were willing to offer life.”

Colom said Barker will be eligible for early release in 2062.

Barker’s attorney, Sanford Knott, couldn’t be reached for comment.

Syboris Pippins remains charged with capital murder in the case. Brandon Sherrod is charged with accessory after the fact.

Collier Tillman, Joseph’s father, said he was thankful for the work of law enforcement and the district attorney’s office in pursuing the case.

“We lost a lot when we lost Joseph,” he said. “He was full of life and love and had a lot more to give. We and many others will always feel that loss, but can rest in the assurance that justice has been served.”
