Who Is Markeith Loyd? Pregnant Mother Sade Dixon Killed By Ex-Boyfriend In Florida, Police Allege

A pregnant woman was allegedly killed by her ex-boyfriend outside her home after she answered the door and the man shot her. Sade Dixon, 24, was three months pregnant, according to local media reports.

Dixon, who left behind two young children, was at her Orlando area home Tuesday night when the man banged on the door at about 9:15 p.m., the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said. Her 26-year-old brother, Ronald Steward, was also shot when he tried to save his sister from the attack. He was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries.

The gunman was identified by police as Markeith Loyd, 41, Dixon's ex-boyfriend. He fled after the shooting and was considered armed and dangerous. He has been arrested 20 times since 1994, including for first-degree battery and for open carrying of weapons, according to Orange County, Florida, court records.

Other family members, including the victim's children and parents, were home at the time of the shooting.

“I don't even know where to go. Right now I'm just numb,” said Dixon’s mother, Stephanie Dixon-Daniels. She said her son naturally intervened to protect his sister.

"He's always there for his siblings, always," said Dixon-Daniels, adding of her daughter, “She was a phenomenal woman. She did everything she possibly could for her children.”

The victim's father, Ron Daniels, said he wanted the violence to stop. "We don't want nobody retaliating, keeping it real for the 'hood', because the 'hood' ain't bringing my child back," he said.

He said his daughter recently received her real estate license. She also had a small business selling hair products.

"She had goals," said Daniels. "Once she set her mind to it, she had her way to go get it."Daniels said his daughter was a "fantastic, phenomenal, awesome, one-of-a-kind" mother."She was upbeat, outgoing and fun," he said. "She was just a joyous person."

Markeith Loyd: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Here’s what we know so far about the shooting and the suspect.

    1. Officer Debra Clayton, a 17-Year Police Veteran, Tried to Arrest Loyd at a Walmart

Clayton was shot and killed after 7:15 a.m. Orlando police announced that there was an “OPD officer involved shooting” at 7:51 a.m. on Twitter. Police said in their report that Clayton reported in at 7:17 a.m. that she was going to try to arrest a murder suspect. Police say that suspect was Loyd.

Two minutes after Clayton’s report, other officers who arrived at the scene radioed that an officer was shot. The first responding officer performed CPR and Clayton was rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center. She was pronounced dead at 7:40 a.m.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of the Princeton Street Walmart, police told WESH.

During a press conference, Orlando police announced that Master Sgt. Debra Clayton was the victim. She died at 7:40 a.m.

“(The shooter) was an average looking dude, he walked by me, had a security vest and everything,” witness James Herman told WFTV. “I was walking down the sidewalk, right past the officer, and I heard her tell him to stop, or whatever, and he shot her. He shot her down. He took off running. It’s unreal.”

Police said that Clayton was hit three times.

    2. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office Said Loyd Also Shot at a Deputy & Missed

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office launched the manhunt for Loyd after he shot a deputy, The Orlando Sentinel reports. The Sheriff’s Office tweet, seen below, did not mention the shooting of the Orlando Police officer. The office asked the public not to approach Loyd.

    OCSO FL News @OrangeCoSheriff
BREAKING: OCSO seeking Markeith Loyd. Massive manhunt underway near Cinderlane and Rosemont. DO NOT APPROACH. Call 911. Murder suspect.
    <time class="dt-updated" datetime="2017-01-09T14:25:22+0000" pubdate="" title="Time posted: 09 Jan 2017, 14:25:22 (UTC)">9:25 AM - 9 Jan 2017</time>

The Orlando Police Department said that after shooting Clayton, Loyd fled the scene in a vehicle. While pulling into an apartment complex, a Sheriff’s deputy spotted him. Loyd fired at the deputy’s unmarked SUV twice, but did not hit the deputy.

Loyd then stole a vehicle and fled the scene, police say. He then left the carjacked vehicle near Rosemont and Cinderlane Parkway.

According to WESH, Loyd shot at the Sheriff’s deputy after shooting the police officer.

The Sheriff’s office said that the manhunt is focused near Rosemont and Cinderlane Parkway. “Markeith Loyd is considered armed and dangerous. We are asking the public to assist us with his whereabouts. However, we ask the public not to approach him and call 911 instead,” the Sheriff’s office stated on Facebook.

    3. Clayton Died at a Hospital Minutes After the Shooting & A Deputy Died During the Search for Loyd

Clayton, the police officer Loyd is suspected of shooting, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center. But three hours after the shooting, the police department posted the above video on Twitter, announcing that the officer died. Police confirmed on Twitter that she died at 7:40 a.m., around a half-hour after the shooting.

Orlando City Commissioner Regina Hill posted a message on Facebook that read, “Oh God!!!! Please pray for my OPD Liaison, she’s been shot down in Pinehills.”

Police said on Twitter that Clayton worked the day shift patrol and will be “missed beyond words. She always had a smile” and would high-five every kid she came across.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that Florida Governor Rick Scott was in Orlando for another event, but has cancelled it due to the shooting.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina said that officials spoke to Clayton’s family and was committed to community work.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that police confirmed during a press conference that a second law enforcement officer died during the search for Loyd. The Sheriff’s Deputy was on a motorcycle when the deputy was injured. The deputy was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead there.

The Sheriff’s Office announced on Twitter that the deputy was Deputy First Class Norman Lewis, an 11-year veteran.

    4. Loyd Is Also the Suspect in the Murder of a Pregnant Woman in December

Loyd is the suspect for the murder of Sade Nixon, who was killed in December, reports WESH. She was Loyd’s ex-girlfriend and about three months pregnant at the time of the murder. She was 24 years old.

Police said that her brother, Ronald Steward, 26, came to help her, but was also shot at the scene. He was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition after the shooting.

Police said that Dixon was killed in a home on Long Peak Drive, with her 5-year-old and 7-year-old children in the home. Her parents were also home at the time.

    5. Loyd Posted ‘Time to Power Back Up’ on Facebook After Dixon’s Death

Loyd is a graduate of Maynard Evans High School, according to his Facebook page. He hasn’t used his Facebook page since December 13, when he posted “Time to power back up.” That was the day after Dixon was killed. He also posted a live video from a club just moments before that shooting.

Another post on Loyd’s page reads, “Orlando Fla.. ,when you talk about street legends mention ME!!!!! Me!!!! Y’all know what is ,real n***a turned into a man with time.. Love y’all.”

Loyd also has a criminal record, The Orlando Sentinel notes. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and five years of probation for conspiracy with intent to distribute cocaine, federal court records show. His probation ended in 2014.

Day 3: 2 arrested, accused of helping Markeith Loyd

    By News 13 Team Coverage
    mynews13.com

ORLANDO -- A niece and an associate of Markeith Loyd have been arrested and charged with helping the man who has prompted a massive law enforcement manhunt after the slaying of an Orlando Police officer.

Lakensha Smith-Loyd, Markeith Loyd’s niece, was arrested Wednesday on charges she helped the accused cop-killer by picking up money for him Saturday, Jan. 7, at the restaurant at which he worked, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.

Zarghee Mayan, 33, meanwhile, is accused of giving "inconsistent statements" to authorities about the 41-year-old Loyd, according to his Orange County arrest affidavit released Wednesday.

Markeith Loyd is accused in the slaying of Clayton, who was shot at an Orlando Wal-Mart as she confronted him about the December shooting death of Loyd's pregnant ex-girlfriend.

According to the affidavit, deputies reached out to Mayan on Dec. 14, 2016, less than a day after 24-year-old Sade Dixon was shot to death in her Orlando home. Her brother, Ronald Allen Stewart, was also shot and critically hurt. Dixon was Loyd's ex-girlfriend, with whom he had previously lived.

Mayan at first denied having contact with Loyd. Later, he told deputies that Loyd went to his workplace, Texas Fried Chicken at 400 South Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando, threatened him with a gun and told him to drive to various locations. While Mayan drove Loyd around, Loyd said he shot his girlfriend "and he would (shoot) any cops if they tried to stop him," the affidavit said.

However, when authorities reached out to Mayan on Monday, he told them a different story. This time, Mayan said Loyd climbed into his vehicle and asked Mayan to drive him to a location. Mayan told authorities that Loyd did not threaten him but took him to the place Loyd asked him to go.

The affidavit said Mayan gave $200 to a Loyd family member, who was supposed to give the money to Loyd later. It also said Mayan gave Loyd food at his workplace and noticed that Loyd was wearing a bulletproof vest.

Mayan was charged Tuesday night with accessory after the fact to first degree murder with a firearm. No bond has been set.

Currently, the reward for information leading to the capture of Markeith Loyd has been raised to $100,000, authorities announced Tuesday — more than 24 hours after an Orlando Police officer was shot and killed outside of a Wal-Mart.

Anyone with information on Loyd's location is asked to call Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477). The reward for information is $100,000.

Markeith Loyd's ex-girlfriend arrested as manhunt continues

Loyd has been evading arrest since December, police say

    By Adrienne Cutway
    clickorlando.com

ORLANDO, Fla. - One of Markeith Loyd's ex-girlfriends has been arrested for helping collect money for him after he fatally shot his pregnant ex-girlfriend in Pine Hills in December, according to an arrest affidavit.

Jameis Slaughter, 25, was being questioned around 7 p.m. Wednesday and deputies announced around 9 p.m. that she was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.

Deputies said Slaughter originally gave them the name of her twin sister, Jamesia Slaughter, when they apprehended her. She told them her real name as she was being taken to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, the affidavit said.

In the hours after Loyd fatally shot Orlando police Master Sgt. Debra Clayton outside a Walmart on John Young Parkway, Slaughter's vehicle was seen circling the grocery store and the area where Loyd was believed to have escaped.

Deputies said Slaughter also attempted to collect rent money from a woman on Loyd's behalf on Dec. 17, days after police said Loyd fatally shot his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon.

Jamesia Slaughter was also named in the affidavit, but she has not been arrested.

Slaughter's arrest marks the third in about 24 hours in connection with the search for Loyd. Zarghee Mayan, 33, was arrested Tuesday night and Loyd’s niece, Lakensha Smith-Loyd, 27, was arrested Wednesday afternoon.

Slaughter, Mayan and Smith-Loyd are all charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.

Deputies said Mayan has seen Loyd multiple times since Dixon's murder on Dec. 13. In one of those encounters, the two hugged and Mayan realized Loyd was wearing a bulletproof vest.

Mayan gave Loyd money and food in the days after Dixon's murder, according to an arrest affidavit. He also gave Smith-Loyd $200 to give to her uncle.

Orlando police Chief John Mina said Tuesday that arrest warrants were being prepared for people who aided and abetted Loyd after Sade's murder.

Loyd is also wanted in the shooting death of Clayton, 42, who was slain Monday after confronting Loyd outside a Walmart, according to authorities.
