Jereme Lee Nelson Sentenced to 39 Years for 2016 KS Triple Homicide

Angela Graevs, Travis Street and Richard Prouty

Suspects in Harvey County triple-homicide could face death penalty

HESSTON – Two suspects arrested in connection with three homicides near Hesston in October await extradition, and could face a death sentence.

“That is on the table,” said David Yoder, Harvey County prosecutor. “The alternative is a possibility of life without parole.”

Both 35-year-old Jereme Lee Nelson and 31-year-old Myrta Rangel were arrested Jan. 12 near Rosarito, Mexico, by Mexican authorities on warrants connected to the murders. Both have signed a waiver of extradition and are currently detained San Diego, California.

Yoder said during a Friday press conference that each suspect could face not only a death penalty but three sentences of at least 50 years in prison with a maximum of a life sentence. The press conference, which included newly elected Sheriff Chad Gay, Deputy County Attorney Jason Lane and Kansas Bureau of Investigation Senior Special Agent Greg Skelton, lasted about five minutes. No questions were accepted, as the case is still under investigation.

“It is still an active investigation,” Yoder said. “We are still interviewing witnesses and persons of interest who may have information in the case. We are still reviewing evidence. We have issued numerous search warrants in the case and search warrants are still being issued in the matter. It is an active investigation. Further information will be divulged when we get it.”

Nelson and Rangel each face one count of capital murder and three counts of first-degree murder charges, filed by the Harvey County prosecutor in November. No hearings in the case have been scheduled as of yet.

“The defendants are back here at this time,” Yoder said. “We anticipate that they will be here in the very near future. Transportation arrangements are being made at this time.”

According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Travis Street, 33, of Moundridge, Angela May Graevs, 37, of Moundridge, and Richard Prouty, 52, of Newton were found dead in a driveway in the 8600 block of Spring Lake Road near Alta Mills – between Hesston and Moundridge – Oct. 30.

At 5:30 p.m. Oct. 30, a motorist called 911 and said she had been waved down by a maroon vehicle. She told dispatchers she had been told there were two bodies in the driveway of a home in the 8600 block of N. Spring Lake Road.

According to the sheriff’s department, investigators found three bodies in the driveway and an 18-month-old-baby in the house. Then-sheriff T. Walton said that the deaths had happened “earlier in the day,” estimating a time of death of about 11 a.m.

He said he believed the shootings took place outside of the house. The child’s parents were among the victims of the shooting. The child was taken to other family for care.

Nelson and Rangel have been convicted of drug offenses in the past – Rangel was convicted of a possession of opiates charge in Sedgwick County in 2006. While in the Topeka Correctional Facility, she was reported for disruptive behavior. According to a report from the Kansas Department of Corrections, Nelson has prior convictions for meth, firearms, burglary and theft. He is also listed as an absconder.

Kansas prosecutor to seek death penalty in triple homicide

A Kansas prosecutor plans to seek the death penalty against one of two people accused of killing three people before fleeing to Mexico.

Harvey County Attorney David Yoder announced the plans to seek the death penalty against 35-year-old Jereme (JEHR'-uh-mee) Nelson in a news release Friday. Yoder said he is still considering whether to seek the death penalty against 31-year-old Myrta Rangel.

Nelson and Rangel are charged with one count of capital murder and three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of 33-year-old Travis Street, 37-year-old Angela May Graevs and 52-year-old Richard Prouty. The victims' bodies were found in October outside a rural home near Moundridge. An 18-month-old child was found unharmed.

Nelson and Rangel were extradited Thursday to Kansas, and Yoder said they don't yet have attorneys.

Murder defense seeks continuance, media controls

Jereme Nelson and Myrta Rangle will each stand trial in connection with three murders in Harvey County late last year - and both are set for a first appearance Feb. 6.

Nelson is facing a possible death penalty, which led district court judge Joe Dickenson to appoint the Death Penalty Defense Unit to Nelson's defense team. The unit has assigned three team members to Nelson's case.

Those three lawyers have filed several motions in district court since becoming members of Nelson's defense

Among them is a motion to continue a preliminary hearing. Everyone charged with a felony in Kansas is entitled to a preliminary hearing. The preliminary hearing is used for the judge to determine if sufficient probable cause is present to move the case to trial.

That filing stipulates that the legal team for Nelson was not appointed until Jan. 30, with the hearing scheduled for Feb. 6. The filing, dated Jan. 31, states that the defense council does not have sufficient time to prepare for the hearing.

The motion reads: "the process for preparation of a capital murder case is different than any other case and will require additional time for counsel to be ready to undertake a preliminary hearing in this matter."

As of Tuesday, the hearing date had not been changed.

Nelson's council has also filed motions seeking to have him appear in court free of handcuffs or restraints and in civilian clothing. Other motions also include a motion prohibiting trial participants from speaking to media, aside from informing media of court dates connected with the trial. The final motion filed Jan. 31 is a request to bar cameras from the courtroom during proceedings in the case.

According to a complaint filed in November, Nelson faces a capital murder charge as the result of the murder of three people: Travis Street, 33, of Moundridge; Angela May Graevs, 37, of Moundridge; and Richard Prouty, 52, of Newton who were found dead in a driveway in the 8600 block of Spring Lake Road near Alta Mills - between Hesston and Moundridge - Oct. 30, 2016. In addition to capital murder, Nelson faces three counts of first degree murder. The court system shows identical charges for Rangel, though the death penalty is not sought in her case.

In the days following the murders, Nelson, 35, and Rangel, 31, fled to Mexico. According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigations, shortly after 7: p.m. Jan. 12, Mexican authorities arrested the couple. They were extradited to San Diego, before being extradited to Harvey County.

At 5:30 p.m. Oct. 30, 2016, a motorist called 911 and said she had been waved down by a maroon vehicle. She told dispatchers she had been told there were two bodies in the driveway of a home in the 8600 Block of N. Spring Lake Road - west of Hesston and south of Moundridge.

According to then Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton, investigators found three bodies in the driveway and an 18-month-old-baby in the house. He said that the deaths had happened "earlier in the day," estimating a time of death of about 11 a.m.

He said he believed the shootings took place outside of the house. The child's parents were among the victims of the shooting. The child was taken to other family for care.

    Nelson to make court appearance

    By Chad Frey
    The Newton Kansan

The capital murder case of Jereme Nelson, a man accused of a triple homicide that occurred Oct. 30 of 2016, continues to move through the court system.

Nelson is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. Sept. 6.

According to a release by prosecutor David Yoder, Nelson is expected to waive his right to an evidentiary hearing, and no testimony is expected during the preliminary hearing. Judge Joe Dickenson will preside over the hearing.

The purpose of a preliminary hearing is to determine whether the prosecutor has enough evidence to justify further criminal proceedings. A preliminary hearing is held in open court. One video and one photographic camera will be allowed in the courtroom for use by news media.

Nelson is facing a possible death penalty, which led district court judge Joe Dickenson to appoint the Death Penalty Defense Unit to Nelson’s defense team. The unit has assigned three team members to Nelson’s case. Charges against Nelson include capital murder and three first-degree murder charges.

Both 35-year-old Nelson and 31-year-old Myrta Rangel were arrested Jan. 12 near Rosarito, Mexico, by Mexican authorities on warrants connected to the murders. Murder charges against Rangel were dropped. She is facing several weapons charges in federal court.

According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, three people were found dead in a driveway in the 8600 block of Spring Lake Road near Alta Mills - between Hesston and Moundridge - Oct. 30. Investigators also found an 18-month-old child in the house, who was unharmed.

According to a report from the Kansas Department of Corrections, Nelson has prior convictions for meth, firearms, burglary and theft. He was also listed as an absconder.

October trial scheduled for man charged in Harvey County triple murder

    KWCH

NEWTON, Kan. - There was a hearing held Wednesday for a man charged in a October 2016 triple murder in Harvey County.

Thirty-six-year-old Jereme Nelson is charged with capital murder and three counts of first-degree murder. Nelson is accused of killing 33-year-old Travis Street. 37-year-old Angela Graevs, and 52-year-old Richard Prouty in rural Harvey County.

In July, Nelson's girlfriend, Myrta Rangel, pleaded guilty to federal firearms charges in connection with the triple murder case.

Harvey County Attorney David Yoder says Nelson's hearing Wednesday was for a motion for a pretrial deposition from one of two eyewitnesses to the case.

Yoder says the judge agreed to the recorded pretrial deposition scheduled for March 8, 2019. The deposition's purpose is to protect the only remaining eyewitness as the other eyewitness died in a motorcycle wreck and thus, cannot testify.

The jury trial for Nelson is set to start on Oct. 1, 2019 and is expected to last about four weeks, Yoder says.

As this is a capital murder case, the death penalty is on the table as possible sentence for Nelson.

Man pleads guilty to triple slaying in central Kansas

    By AP

NEWTON, Kan. (AP) -- A man originally charged with capital murder for the deaths of three people in central Kansas in 2016 has avoided the death penalty by agreeing to plead guilty to four felonies.

Jereme Nelson, 39, pleaded guilty Jan. 10 to intentional second-degree murder, reckless second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter and aggravated battery, Harvey County Attorney David Yoder said Thursday.

The plea deal calls for 39 years in prison.

Prosecutors met with the families of Nelson's three victims before finalizing the deal or announcing it to the media, the Newton Kansan reported.

Nelson's girlfriend, Myrta Rangel, pleaded guilty in July 2018 for federal firearms charges. She admitted that she gave a gun to Nelson knowing he was going to the victims' home to collect a drug debt.

"This was a case that if we could get a substantial prison sentence, whereby Nelson would be serving most of the rest of his life behind bars, this was something we should look at," Yoder said. "Nothing can bring back the three victims... Both decided that rather than take their chances at trial, this was a resolution everyone can live with."

Prosecutors said Nelson shot and killed Travis Street, 33; Angela Graevs, 37, and Richard Prouty, 52, at a home in rural Moundridge where Street and Graevs lived. They were found dead in a driveway on Oct. 30, 2016. An 18-month-old inside the home was unharmed.

According to Rangel's plea agreement, Nelson drove to Street's home, where he shot all three victims in the head. Prouty was at the home to buy meth, according to the plea.

One of the witnesses to the crime died last year and another witness did not see everything that happened, Yoder said.

"The only other person alive that was at the scene was Nelson, and he did not make any statements," Yoder said. "It came down to proof of premeditation. I don't think there is any doubt to the killings, there is just how it all occurred at the scene and being able to reconstruct it."

Nelson and Rangel were arrested Jan. 12, 2017, near Rosarito, Mexico.

Nelson faces sentencing on Feb. 3.

WICHITA WOMAN SENTENCED FOR ROLE IN HARVEY COUNTY KILLINGS

    By Jacob Weston
    KFDI News

35-year-old Myrta Rangel, of Wichita, was sentenced to six years in federal prison for her role in three deaths in Harvey County.

Rangel was convicted of giving a gun to someone she knew was a felon, while knowing the gun would be used in a drug trafficking crime. She admitted to giving a handgun to Jereme Nelson, who pled guilty to killing Travis Street, Angela Graevs and Richard Prouty. Prosecutors said this involved a drug deal in rural Harvey County, in October of 2016.

Rangel and Nelson fled to Mexico after the killings. They were eventually caught and returned to the U.S. in January of 2017.

Nelson agreed to 39 years in prison as part of plea deal that kept him from facing the death penalty. He is still awaiting formal sentencing.
