    China Executions - 2017

Colombia protests China's execution of 72-year-old drug mule

Colombia's government is protesting China's execution of a retired journalist who was sentenced to death for smuggling cocaine into the Asian country.

Chinese authorities said Tuesday that Ismael Arciniegas was killed by lethal injection after a last-ditch diplomatic effort by Colombia to save his life failed.

The 72-year-old is the first Colombian to be executed in China but at least 15 more are on death row for drug offenses.

Arciengas' son said his father entered the criminal underworld in the 1980s while researching an unpublished book on Colombia's drug cartels.

He was arrested in 2010 trying to smuggle four kilograms of cocaine into China in exchange for $5,000.

Since November, China has repatriated two convicted Colombian drug traffickers for humanitarian reasons so they could complete their sentences at home.

"There is a point in the history of a society when it becomes so pathologically soft and tender that among other things it sides even with those who harm it, criminals, and does this quite seriously and honestly. Punishing somehow seems unfair to it, and it is certain that imagining ‘punishment’ and ‘being supposed to punish’ hurts it, arouses fear in it." Friedrich Nietzsche

    Daily Mail

The trio yesterday received death penalty in a public square of Jieyang in Guangdong Province. They were sent to the execution ground and shot right after the public trial, reported media.

A Chinese court yesterday sentenced three drug dealers to death in front of more than 1,000 people, including young students.

The trio received death penalty at a public square of Jieyang in Guangdong Province, a coastal area in southern China that's seen an increase of drug dealers.

They were sent to the execution ground and shot right after the public trial, according to Chinese media.

The open trial was organized by an intermediate court in Jieyang in a public square yesterday

More than 1,000 people, including students and local residents, witness the sentencing in People's Square in Jieyang's Huilai County, reported Sina.com, citing Guangzhou Daily.

The open trial was organized by the Jieyang Intermediate People's Court and the legal authorities of Huilai County on November 28.

The three drug dealers have been named Tang Zhuorong, Tang Shaokun and Huang Haohua.

Tang Zhuorong and Tang Shaokun were convicted of selling, transporting and producing drugs. Huang Haohua was convicted of selling and producing drugs.

They were among a total of eight drug suspects who were sentenced yesterday during the trial. The sentences for the five other suspects were not revealed.

In Huilai County along, 92 drug-related cases have been busted in 2017 and 133 suspects have been arrested, according to Guangzhou Daily.

So far this year, Huilai police have reportedly cracked seven drug-smuggling rings, seizing 86.25kg (190 pounds) of crystal methamphetamine, 80.96kg (178 pounds) of liquid meth and 448.7kg (989 pounds) of ephedrine. Officers have also caught 581 drug users and put 432 of them into rehab.

In Guangdong Province as a whole, police have busted more than 13,000 drug-related cases in 2017, arrested more than 16,000 suspects, caught more than 104,000 drug users and seized 10.4 tonnes of drugs, reported Xinhua News Agency.

In Shanwei, a city next to Jieyang, a court sentenced 13 people to death for selling drugs during a public trial watched by some 10,000 people in June. Eight of those sentenced were executed immediately after the trial.

Ten drug dealers, murderers executed following open-air stadium trial

    Global Times

Ten criminals were tried at a local sports stadium, sentenced to death and immediately taken away and executed in South China's Guangdong Province on Saturday.

Twelve people stood trial in the open-air court in front of thousands of spectators by two courts - the Shanwei Intermediate People's Court and Lufeng People's Court in Guangdong Province, The Beijing News reported on Saturday.

The 12 suspects who were charged with drug dealing and murder had their trials heard at a local sports stadium in the city of Lufeng, which has a reputation of being China's major drug workshop.

Video clips posted by The Beijing News on its official Weibo account showed each accused being paraded into the stadium in Donghai Township in Lufeng in the back of a modified police pickup truck, surrounded by four armed police officers.

The stadium was filled with thousands of local residents who came to watch the open trial. One by one the suspects stood handcuffed on a prisoner's dais on the running track. The ten who were sentenced to death were taken away and immediately executed, according to The Beijing News.

Guangdong is China's largest producer of methamphetamine. Xinhua News Agency reported that more than a third of the methamphetamine consumed in China was made in villages around Lufeng.

Several such open trials have been held in Lufeng in recent years. In June 2015, 13 suspects were sentenced to death for drug trafficking in a public trial that was watched by more 10,000 local residents in Lufeng. Xinhua reported that local authorities hope the public sentencing will showcase the government's hard line on drugs.
