Two known MS-13 gang members, formerly of El Salvador, appeared in Houston court Wednesday to hear charges against them in the kidnapping and torture of one victim and the "satanic" killing of a second.

Diego Hernandez-Rivera, 18, and leader of the group Miguel Alvarez-Flores, 22, also known as "Diabolico," were arrested Monday on charges of aggravated kidnapping in one case and murder in a second in the shooting death of an unidentified woman's body earlier this month on a Houston road.

Hernandez-River and Alvarez-Flores laughed, smiled and waved for the media cameras during Thursday morning's hearing. Both are immigrants in the country illegally, according to court records.

The men remained Thursday in the Harris County jail under $300,000 bond that was set at a later court hearing before state District Judge Maria Jackson.

In the kidnapping case, the female victim allegedly ran away from school around Feb. 2, to an apartment on Glenmont. There she tried to leave and was held against her will for four days and sexually assaulted by one of the gang members.

The victim was then held for around 14 days at a different location on Gessner.

According to the charges being read in a court hearing Wednesday morning, this victim told detectives that there were six gang members living at the apartment who forced her to ingest drugs and alcohol to keep her in an intoxicated state during most of her time there.

She was also held down while Alvarez-Flores tattooed the image of a grim reaper from her knee to her foot.

On Feb. 16, the body of another young woman was found in west Houston, lying along the curb at the 9900 block of Sharpcrest Street. The victim in the aggravated kidnapping was able to identify her only as "Genesis," another girl also at the apartment on Gessner.

According to the court hearing, Genesis allegedly made an outburst against the gang members' satanic rituals and shrine, which wound up leading Flores to declare the "Beast" required a soul sacrifice.

When the kidnapping victim woke up the day after the incident, Genesis was gone.

When police found her, she had been shot once in the head and chest. Investigators believe she was shot by Hernandez-Rivera and Alvarez-Flores at another location and dumped on Sharpcrest.

Prosecutor Lisa Collins told the judge Thursday that Hernandez-Rivera told police that he led the woman to a remote area and shot her twice.

Both suspects are identified in court records as MS-13 gang members from El Salvador. Both men would be held by federal immigration authorities if they are able to make bail, Collins said.

Both men have requested a court-appointed lawyer, and their cases have been assigned to the 339th district court with Judge Maria Jackson.

Family, friends ID girl killed in 'satanic' murder

HOUSTON - Family members and friends say the girl murdered by MS-13 gang members was 15-year-old Genesis Cornejo from Jersey Village.

Genesis disappeared on January 19 and police thought she ran away to New York with an unidentified man.

Instead, she ended up with the gang members who allegedly killed her as part of a satanic ritual.

Rosmeri Cornejo posted on Facebook that she is devastated by her daughter's death and that "some damned gang' took her life.

Melissa Tagarelli worked with Rosmeri Cornejo back when they lived in New York and she's known Genesis since she was a little girl."

"When I saw her last time, she was really affectionate with her little brother," Tagarelli said. "She was reading to him in the waiting room and just seemed like a normal, young teen."

Tagarelli says the family moved to the Houston area a couple of months ago.

Houston police have not confirmed the girl they found shot to death in southwest Houston on February 16 was Genesis Cornejo.

Police also said Friday that a third underage girl is now a part of the investigation but did not release any more information on her.

"These are juveniles. These are very impressionable young women. You're talking about 14, 15 years old," said HPD Sgt. Chris Sturdivant. "They're with guys who are adults, who are hardened gang members.

MS-13 gang members sentenced 40 years after murdering Houston girl for dating rival gang member

    By Rebecca Hennes
    Houston Chronicle

Two MS-13 gang members have been sentenced to 40 years in prison in the slaying of a 15-year-old Houston girl killed for dating a rival gang member.

Diego Alexander Hernandez-Rivera, 22, on Monday pleaded guilty to murder in the death of Cornejo-Alvarado, according to the Harris County District Attorney's Office. Hernandez-Rivera, whose MS-13 nickname was "Scary," also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in exchange for 12 years. His plea deal comes just before jury selection was set to begin in his trial.

Miguel Angel Alvarez-Flores, known as “Diabolico,” was also sentenced to 40 years after pleading guilty in February to the girl's murder.

Genesis Cornejo-Alvarado was found shot to death in the head and the chest in 2017 on the side of a road in Houston's Chinatown after her family reported her missing. At the time, officials said her death was linked to a Satanic ritual.

A third MS-13 gang member, Jose Salvador Gonzalez-Campos, known as “Danger,” directed Alvarez-Flores and Hernandez-Rivera to execute the girl because she had been dating a rival 18th Street gang member. Gonzalez-Campos was sentenced to more than 39 years in federal prison for directing the girl's death and for two other murders in the Columbus, Ohio area.

Hernandez-Rivera and Alvarez-Flores told the girl they were going to buy marijuana when they ultimately lured her to her death.

Police believed the girl was killed as a sacrifice in a Satanic ritual after finding an altar to Santa Muerte, the Mexican folk saint of death, in Alvarez-Flores and Hernandez-Rivera's apartment, according to federal court records.
