Timothy Teasley Sentenced to LWOP in 2017 LA Slaying of Thaer Ziden

Rapides DA to seek the death penalty for Timothy Teasley case

    KALB News

RAPIDES PARISH, La. (KALB) - The Rapides Parish District Attorney's Office has filed a notice that it plans to seek the death penalty against Timothy Teasley for the February murder of Thaer Ziden, an employee at Chi-Town Gas & Grocery, and the attempted murder of another employee.

On April 26, Teasley was indicted for first degree murder and attempted first degree murder.

According to a document filed by the State, prosecutors plan to show that Teasley "knowingly created a risk of death or great bodily harm to more than one person." And, "the offense was committed in an especially heinous, atrocious or cruel manner."

Teasley's attorneys are asking that he be mentally evaluated.

The case is being prosecuted by Monica Doss. Teasley is being represented by several attorneys with the Capital Defense Project of Southeast Louisiana.

Pre-trial continued until September for Rapides man facing death row trial

    By Brooke Buford
    KALB News

RAPIDES PARISH, La. (KALB) - A pre-trial was reset until September 12 for Timothy Teasley, 25, of Alexandria who is charged with first degree murder and attempted first degree murder for the February murder of Thaer Ziden, an employee at Chi-Town Gas &

Grocery, and the attempted murder of another employee.

In June, the Rapides Parish District Attorney's Office filed a notice that it plans to seek the death penalty for Teasley in the case. Teasley is being represented by attorneys with the Capital Defense Project of Southeast Louisiana.

His pre-trial was scheduled for Thursday. Before court began, Teasley started getting restless with court bailiffs, repeating over and over, "I ain't got time." And, "I'm telling you the truth."

When he was brought before Judge Monique Rauls, Teasley became restless again and made an effort to try to talk to Judge Rauls about the case, to which she replied, "Not you're not."

Dwight Doskey, who is serving as co-counsel for Teasley, told the judge that, "Mr. Teasley has been unable to speak to us. He feels they have the wrong man." Doskey said he plans to file a motion to determine Teasley's competency.

The pre-trial was reset for September 12. Teasley became restless again and was escorted out, telling the bailiff, "You better be ready to fight."

Suspect in Alexandria fatal shooting committed to mental-heath facility

    By Melissa Gregory
    The Town Talk

An Alexandria man facing the death penalty has been committed to a mental-health facility after being found incapable of proceeding to trial.

The decision puts the case against Timothy Teasley on hold until he can be stabilized to assist with his defense on charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

A sanity hearing was held last week. Teasley faces the charges after two separate shootings that happened on the same street within two days in February.

In April, the Rapides Parish District Attorney's Office filed its intention to seek the death penalty for Teasley in the fatal shooting of 27-year-old Thaer Zidan.

District Attorney Phillip Terrell said Tuesday that the decision to hospitalize Teasley does not mean the case is over. He said prosecution would move forward when doctors rule Teasley is able to understand the charges against him and to assist his defense attorneys.

"This case is going to be a long-haul deal,” said Terrell.

Zidan was working at the Chi-Town Gas & Grocery on 3rd Street on Feb. 14 when Teasley walked in and allegedly began firing. Another employee was shot at, but was not wounded.

    Zidan died at the scene.

Teasley, 25, was arrested hours later, found at his Longfellow Drive home with a gun. Despite minor gunshot wounds he had suffered at the store, he fought officers before being taken into custody, according to police.

After announcing the charges in Zidar's death, the Alexandria Police Department followed up by linking Teasley to a shooting the day before at a nearby store.

In that incident, a man was shot in the abdomen but survived. The department said the two shootings did not appear to be related.

Teasley didn't attend the Nov. 16 sanity hearing, but a Rapides Parish Sheriff's deputy testified why he was not in open court. After hearing the deputy, 9th Judicial District Court Judge Thomas Yeager ruled Teasley was unable to appear.

Back in July, Teasley was removed from a courtroom before a pretrial hearing. From the time he was brought into the courtroom, he was agitated. He spoke loudly about his case and kept leaping from his seat, forcing a deputy to finally escort him out.

Then, when he was before Judge Monique Rauls during his hearing, he kept interrupting her to try to talk about details of his case. After the hearing, his attorney said he intended to file a motion to determine Teasley's competency.

He has been represented by attorneys from the Capital Defense Project of Southeast Louisiana, a nonprofit that represents indigent defendants facing the death penalty.

Yeager made his decision after reviewing Teasley's medical records, reports from the Rapides Parish Detention Center and from doctors on the sanity commission. Dr. Benjamin Lowenburg, who was accepted as an expert in forensic psychiatry, testified during the hearing.

Teasley was ordered committed to the forensic division of the East Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson until further orders of the court.

Alexandria man won't face death penalty store shooting case

    By Melissa Gregory
    The Town Talk

An Alexandria man accused of killing a 3rd Street convenience store employee in February 2017 will not face the death penalty after all.

The state filed notice on Aug. 22 to withdraw its intention to seek the death penalty for Timothy Teasley, 27.

Teasley was indicted in April 2017 on one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty.

In November 2017, he was committed to East Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson. But an order filed on Aug. 30 signed by 9th Judicial District Court Judge Chris Hazel states that officials in Jackson have deemed Teasley able to understand the proceedings and to assist in his defense.

He was in court on Wednesday, less than three weeks before a competency hearing, because the state's decision to not seek the death penalty caused Teasley's defense attorney from the Capital Defense Project to withdraw from the case.

Rapides Parish Assistant District Attorney Monica Doss told Hazel she wanted to be sure an attorney would be appointed for Teasley before the Sept. 23 hearing. Doss was told Chad Guillot already had been appointed to represent Teasley.

Hazel recapped for Teasley what had happened during the hearing, but Teasley replied that he didn't understand.

Trial set for man accused of murdering convenience store employee

Set for Sept. 21 in the 9th Judicial District Court in Rapides Parish

    By Brooke Buford
    KALB News

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - A trial date has been set for an Alexandria man charged with the murder of a convenience store employee.

Timothy Teasley, 28 of Alexandria, is charged with first degree murder for the Feb. 2017 shooting death of Thair Zidan, an employee of Chi-Town Gas & Grocery, and attempted first degree murder of another employee there. He’ll head to a jury trial on Sept. 21. Teasley has pleaded “not guilty.”

In Nov. 2017, Teasley was found incapable of proceeding to trial and was committed to a mental health facility in Jackson. That move put the case on hold until Teasley was stabilized and could assist his appointed attorney, Chad Guillot, with his defense. He was allowed to proceed with his case last August.

Initially, the Rapides Parish District Attorney’s Office planned to seek the death penalty for Teasley. They withdrew that plan last August.

Teasley was in court Monday when the trial date was set. Court minutes reflect that he was “extremely disruptive the entire time he was in court.”

The case is being prosecuted by Monica Doss. Judge Chris Hazel is overseeing the trial.

New sanity commission appointed for murder suspect week before trial was set to start

    By Brooke Buford
    KALB News

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - A new sanity commission has been appointed to evaluate Timothy Teasley, 29 of Alexandria, one week before he was set to go to trial in Rapides Parish on charges of first degree murder and attempted first degree murder.

Teasley was arrested in Feb. 2017 by Alexandria Police for the shooting death of local convenience store clerk, Thair Zidan, and the attempted murder of another store employee.

In Nov. 2017, he was deemed incompetent to stand trial. But, by Jan. 2020, doctors gave the case a green light to move forward.

Since then, doctors have said he’s likely incompetent again. In a report released within the past few weeks, doctors wrote Teasley was exhibiting paranoia, was aggressive toward guards and other inmates in the jail, and he broke a window in the jail. Teasley’s public defender, Chad Guillot, told the court that he has been unable to have meaningful discussions about the case with him.

Judge Chris Hazel has authorized another sanity commission to evaluate him. The case is being prosecuted by Monica Doss.

Man accused in 2017 fatal shooting at Alexandria store set for Monday hearing

    By Melissa Gregory
    Alexandria Town Talk

An Alexandria man accused in a 2017 homicide will have a status hearing on Monday after being ruled "fully restored" after almost a year in a state mental facility.

Timothy Teasley's trial on attempted first-degree and first-degree murder charges is scheduled for July 11, but he'll first go before 9th Judicial District Court Judge Chris Hazel.

Teasley's attorney, Chad Guillot, notified the court in April that he had returned from the East Louisiana State Hospital after being ordered there in July 2021 when three doctors could not reach a consensus on his mental state.

Teasley, 30, is accused of killing 27-year-old Thaer Zidan on Valentine's Day as Zidan worked at the Chi-Town Gas & Grocery on 3rd Street at Willow Glen River Road.

Zidan died at the scene. Another employee was shot at, but not wounded.

On Wednesday, Hazel granted a motion from Guillot to withdraw Teasley's not guilty plea to both charges and to enter a not guilty by reason of insanity plea.

Guillot also filed notice that he intended to introduce testimony about Teasley's mental condition at his trial.

The day after his arrest in the Zidan case, the Alexandria Police Department arrested Teasley again in connection to a shooting the previous day at a nearby store that wounded another man. He does not appear to have been formally charged in that case, according to online Rapides Parish Clerk of Court records.

Teasley initially faced the death penalty in the Zidan case, but the state dropped that in August 2019.

Timothy Teasley found guilty of 2nd-degree murder, attempted 2nd-degree murder

Sentencing set for Oct. 17 in the Rapides Parish Courthouse

By Brooke Buford and Alena Noakes
    KALB News

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - A Rapides Parish Jury has found Timothy Teasley, 30, of Alexandria, guilty of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.

Teasley was charged with the Feb. 14, 2017, deadly shooting of Thair Zidan, 27, a clerk at Chi-Town Gas & Grocery on Third Street in Alexandria. The attempted second-degree murder charge was for a co-worker of Zidan’s who Teasley shot at, but missed.

Prosecutors said Teasley shot Zidan because two weeks prior Zidan reported Teasley’s girlfriend for shoplifting.

Teasley had pleaded “not guilty by reason of insanity.” Two psychiatrists offered differing opinions on his condition. One doctor believed he was schizophrenic based on reviewing prior medical records, meeting with Teasley for two hours and speaking with Teasley’s sister about family history. The other said he had an “anti-social personality disorder” based on a lengthier review, which included watching the surveillance video, an interview Teasley did with APD and listening to a jail call. This doctor was adamant that Teasley knew right from wrong.

It took the jury about an hour to reach their verdict. Teasley had no reaction when the verdict was read.

Meanwhile, Lou Zeidan, the brother of Thair, held a framed picture of his brother while awaiting the verdict, breaking into tears upon the first “guilty” reading.

”I think that the team that we had with the evidence they have brought forth, made the decision almost inevitable in my eyes,” said Lou. “It has been this whole time, and when they came back with a guilty verdict, it has made these five and a half years, just all these emotions for the past five and a half years come rushing forth. I cannot tell you the amount of justice that this brought to our family. Even though it won’t bring him back, nothing will. This guy could live four lifetimes, and it’ll never be anywhere near my brother. However, with that said, I think it’s just. It is the system that we have and the society that we live in. And, when you have an amazing prosecuting team that is going after the truth and justice for the family, that’s all I could ask for.”

“We are extremely pleased that the jury was able to see through the rouse that is the insanity defense, particularly in this case,” said Assistant District Attorney Brian Cespiva, one of the prosecutors for the State. “We believe that the jury listened intently to the psychiatric experts and realized that he knew very well when he killed Thair Zidan and tried to kill Mr. Alzubi, he knew exactly what he was doing, and he knew what he was doing was wrong. And I’m glad that the jury was able to see through that defense.”

Defense Attorney Chad Guillot requested that the jury be polled, a process to determine that each individual on the jury was in agreeance on a guilty verdict. After Judge Chris Hazel confirmed the unanimous verdict, the polled jury slips were placed under seal, per the request of the prosecution.

“Well, the verdict, you know, is not surprising, but everyone deserves the best defense that they can get,” said Guillot. “We did what we could. We put on the evidence that we had. And unfortunately, the jury just didn’t see it our way.”

The only question the jury had during deliberation was a request to listen to a phone call Teasley made from jail, where he had talked about going for an insanity plea, as well as reports from the two psychiatric physicians who testified. The physicians’ reports were not submitted into evidence, so the only request that could be fulfilled was the replay of the jail phone call. The jury specifically requested the phone call be played “without disturbance.”

In an interview with News Channel 5, Guillot noted that Teasley’s behavior was “disruptive” for the defense attorneys, prosecution, jury and judge.

“That sort of was the reason we had this insanity is because we thought he couldn’t really act reasonably,” said Guillot. “This kind of showed that he has some type of mental disorder, but obviously not enough that the jury felt that this was an insanity defense.”

Teasley will be sentenced on Oct. 17.

Teasley is represented by Chad Guillot and Randall Hayes, with Brian Cespiva, Johnny Giordano and Monica Doss acting as prosecution for the State. Judge Hazel presided.

Timothy Teasley sentenced to life for 2017 murder of Thaer Zidan at Alexandria store

    By Melissa Gregory
    Alexandria Town Talk

Timothy Teasley was sentenced to life in prison Monday for the murder of a convenience store clerk in Alexandria on Valentine's Day 2017.

Teasley, 30, was convicted Sept. 30 in the second-degree murder of 27-year-old Thaer Zidan at the Chi-Town Gas & Grocery on Third Street.

The Rapides Parish jury also convicted him of attempted second-degree murder for shooting at another employee. That employee was not wounded.

Ninth Judicial District Court Judge Chris Hazel also sentenced Teasley to 40 years on the attempted murder conviction. It will be served concurrently with his life term.

Both sentences are to be served without the possibility of parole, probation or suspension, according to Rapides Parish Clerk of Court records. Hazel deemed both as crimes of violence.

Teasley's attorney, Chad Guillot, objected to the sentence and told Hazel he would be filing an appeal.
