1 Kissimmee officer killed, 1 gravely injured, chief says

    By WESH2 News

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — One Kissimmee police officer has been killed and another is in grave condition after what authorities said was an ambush style shooting Friday night.

Kissimmee police chief Jeff O'Dell Sergeant Sam Howard and Officer Matthew Baxter were shot when they responded to a call in the area of Palmway and Cypress streets shortly before 9:30 p.m.

Baxter, a 3-year veteran of the department has been pronounced dead and Howard, a 10-year veteran, was gravely injured, O'Dell said.

Police were called to the area to investigate a suspicious activity. As the officers arrived and began speaking with three people, a fourth person emerged and fired at police, authorities said. The officers did not have an opportunity to return fire, O'Dell said.

Police said the shooting happened in an area known for drug activity.

O'Dell said three people are in custody, but a fourth remains at large.

Kissimmee police said it has been 25 years since an officer died in the line of duty.

President Donald Trump tweeted early Saturday that his thoughts and prayers are with the Kissimmee Police Department.

Central Florida's law enforcement agencies have taken to social media to extend their thoughts and prayers to the Kissimmee Police Department.

"Please keep @kissimmeepolice in your prayers tonight," the Orlando Police Department said.

"Our solidarity is with @kissimmeepolice as they deal with this tragic loss," the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.

6 Police Officers Shot in Florida and Pennsylvania, 1 Killed and 5 Wounded

    By Alastair Jamieson
    NBC News

Six police officers were shot, one of them fatally, in three separate gun incidents in Florida and Pennsylvania late Friday, officials said.

One officer was killed and another gravely injured in Kissimmee, just south of the theme park hub of Orlando, central Florida.

Two officers were critically wounded in Jacksonville, while two state troopers were shot in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

In Kissimmee, officers Sam Howard and Matthew Baxter were checking suspects in an area of the city for drug activity when they were shot, Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O'Dell said at a news conference. They did not have an opportunity to return fire.

"They were surprised," O'Dell said. When asked whether they were ambushed, he said, "It's too early to tell, but it's leading that way."

Baxter, a three-year veteran of the department, died later in a hospital and Howard, a 10-year veteran, was in serious condition, O'Dell said. Baxter, who was married to another officer, has three young children.

The officers were checking three of the suspects when a fourth opened fire. One of the original three suspects fled and was being sought, and the other three were arrested. Broadcaster WFTV showed aerial footage of police cars with lights flashing swarmed a housing complex as the search continued early Saturday morning.

Mayor Jose Alvarez said in a statement: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of our fallen officer, Matthew Baxter who lost his life in the line of duty. Our prayers also go out to Sergeant Sam Howard and his family as he remains in critical condition.

“The entire city of Kissimmee is in mourning. We pray for all law enforcement who are out there, protecting our community.”

President Donald Trump tweeted that his “thoughts and prayers” were with the local police “and their loved ones.”

In Jacksonville, police officers were responding to a call about an attempted suicide at a house. Gunfire was heard from outside the property as officers arrived, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Director of Patrol and Enforcement Mike Bruno told NBC News.

Before officers even entered the house, the suspect began shooting at them through the doorway and there was an exchange of gunfire in which two officers were struck, one of them in the stomach, Bruno said.

The suspect is dead and it’s not yet known if body cameras were worn or activated.

In Pennsylvania, two troopers were shot and a suspect killed after an incident near a store on West Church Street, Fairchance, Fayette County, Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Melinda Bondarenka said in a statement.

One of the troopers was life-flighted from the scene to a hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia and the other was taken to a hospital via ambulance, NBC station WPXI reported.

Both were stable and alert, Bondarenka said.

    Update: Everett Glenn Miller

On Facebook, Miller went by the name Malik Mohammad Ali, a change he had made only recently, a man who served in the Marines with him, and who spoke to him in recent weeks, told Heavy in a telephone interview.

That man, Darren Hightower, a retired Army soldier and former Marine from Georgia, looked at the recent booking photo and an old mugshot of Everett Glenn Miller and told Heavy they are the same man as Ali, whose Facebook page is filled with recent anger over racism in the United States, slavery, and posts about Charlottesville.

Hightower expressed great shock to Heavy that the man he knew could have ended up this way, calling him a “a true motivator, happy go lucky guy, willing to go that extra mile to help his friends. I don’t understand it.”

Hightower said that Miller served in Afghanistan and worked in military security. You can read more about the Facebook page below. Ali’s cousin, who posted a tribute to the slain officers and about PTSD earlier in the day, told Heavy the family is not certain yet whether he is the shooter and didn’t want to comment.

August 18 was a very bloody night for American law enforcement. In the span of less than two hours, six American police officers were shot in separate incidents in three different cities in Florida and Pennsylvania. In addition to Kissimmee, officers were shot in Jacksonville, Florida and Fairchance, Pennsylvania.

Kissimmee chief details ‘brave and heroic’ takedown of shooting suspect

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Kissimmee’s police chief is calling the officers who arrested a man suspected of shooting two officers Friday night “extremely brave and heroic.”

Police Chief Jeff O'Dell said investigators believe Everett Glenn Miller may have been going for his gun when he was tackled and arrested at Roscoe’s Bar and Package around 11:30 p.m.

O’Dell said Miller shot Officer Matthew Baxter and Sgt. Sam Howard as they investigated a report of suspicious activity.

With chaos still prevailing at the murder scene, detectives used surveillance video to track down Miller at Roscoe’s Bar.

An employee said Miller took refuge at the bar, possibly in a bathroom. When police arrived, they cleared everyone out.

Police said Miller reached toward his waistband inside the bar. Authorities tackled him to the ground and secured him. They located a 9 mm handgun and a .22-caliber revolver.

O’Dell did not say how many people were involved in the takedown, but indicated that officers were in extreme danger until they safely secured the suspect.

“Extremely brave and heroic actions by the deputy; there were other people in the facility,” O’Dell said.

Miller was initially arrested for being a felon in possession of a gun, and he was later charged with first-degree murder.

The Latest: No death penalty in area where officers killed

    By Associated Press

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Latest on police officers shot in Florida (all times local):

Two Florida police officers were fatally shot in a district where the top prosecutor says she is no longer seeking the death penalty.

Sgt. Sam Howard and Officer Matthew Baxter of the Kissimmee Police Department were shot late Friday in the district covered by State Attorney Aramis Ayala.

Ayala announced earlier this year that she wouldn’t seek the death penalty, explaining it’s not a deterrent and it drags on for years for the victims’ relatives.

The announcement came as her office was building a case against Markeith Loyd, who is charged with the fatal shooting of an Orlando Police lieutenant.

Everett Miller is facing a first-degree murder charge for the Kissimmee shootings. He was arrested late Friday.

A spokeswoman for Ayala didn’t respond to an email inquiry seeking comment.

A U.S. congressman from Florida says he plans to ask for a moment of silence on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to honor two officers who were killed on patrol.
