Hearing set in 2014 capital murder case

A hearing is scheduled this week for Kaylon Laray Sephus, indicted on one count of capital murder in connection with the December 2014 death of a 3-year-old girl.

Sephus, 27, remains in the Hunt County Detention Center in lieu of $1 million bond on the charge involving the death of Aliah Christine Walker. Sephus has pleaded not guilty to one count of capital murder.

Sephus was being represented by the Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program, but as of Aug. 31 is being represented by a private attorney.

Pretrial motions are scheduled to be heard Wednesday in the 196th District Court. A trial date has not yet been set.

The indictment accuses Sephus of “hitting, punching or kicking” Walker with his hands or feet, and/or throwing or knocking Walker into a wall or furniture and/or using “object(s) unknown to the grand jury.”

The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office was notified at around 6:30 a.m. Dec. 30, 2014 of an unresponsive female child at an apartment in Celeste.

Sheriff Randy Meeks said a male caretaker was administering CPR at the time. Walker was transported to Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville and was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Sheila Linden.

Sephus, who lived in the home with Walker and her mother, was arrested Jan. 6, 2015.

Capital murder carries a maximum punishment upon conviction of death by lethal injection or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Witnesses to be sworn in next week Kaylon Sephus capital murder trial

    By Brad Keller
    Herald-Banner

The first step toward what is expected to be a death penalty capital murder trial this summer is scheduled next week in a Hunt County state district court.

Judge Andrew Bench intends to begin swearing-in witnesses Monday in the 196th District Court in connection with the trial of Kaylon Laray Sephus, indicted on one count of capital murder in the December 2014 death of a 3-year-old girl.

Sephus remains in the Hunt County Detention Center in lieu of $1 million bond on the charge involving the death of Aliah Christine Walker. Sephus pleaded not guilty.

A check of the court’s schedule shows general jury questioning is set to begin May 13, with individual questioning planned to begin May 28 and the formal jury selection process set for July 15.

Sephus was taken into custody on Jan. 6, 2015 and was indicted by the Hunt County grand jury in March of that year.

The indictment accuses Sephus of “hitting, punching or kicking” Walker with his hands or feet, and/or throwing or knocking Walker into a wall or furniture and/or using “object(s) unknown to the grand jury.”

The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office was notified at around 6:30 a.m., Dec.

Capital murder carries a maximum punishment of death by lethal injection or life in prison without parole.

Sephus is represented by an attorney from the West Texas Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program. Sephus was the first defendant charged with capital murder since Hunt County joined the program in August 2012, through an interlocal agreement with Lubbock County.

The West Texas Regional Public Defender Office was established in 2007 through interlocal agreements between the counties in the 7th and 9th judicial regions, with Lubbock County serving as the administrative county.

Each participating county agrees to pay a yearly fee, based on its population and the number of capital murder cases it has filed within the last 10 years.

The cost of the program to Hunt County is on a sliding scale.

There are some limitations to the program. In the event two people are charged with capital murder and are facing the death penalty in the same case, the office could only defend one of them. The office also doesn't handle the appeals of any convictions, nor does it pay for “second chair” defense attorneys, both of which would still be paid for through the county. The office also does not handle capital murder cases where the death penalty is not being sought.
