A man who confessed to the slaying of an elderly woman last year is set to be tried before a jury in Sinton this week.

According to law enforcement officials, the body of 84-year-old Emma Parker was found Feb. 3, 2016 at her home near Gregory with multiple slash wounds.

They believe she was killed the day before in connection to a robbery - which elevates charges to capital murder.

Lincoln Wade Kilsby, 47, of Taft, was arrested Feb. 5. and confessed to investigators he murdered Parker, also telling them where to find the knife he used in the murder and the stolen items.

Kilsby was indicted on capital murder charges on May 5, 2016 and has since been held at the San Patricio County jail on a $500,000 bond.

Jury selection is underway Monday (Oct. 2), and testimony is set to begin tomorrow in Judge Starr Bauer's court.

Those convicted of capital murder in Texas face punishment ranging up to the death penalty or life in prison.

Murder gets Taft man 84-year sentence

SINTON – It took fewer than five days to try and convict Taft resident Lincoln Wade Kilsby after jurors returned a guilty verdict Friday.

He was sentenced to 84 years in state prison.

Deputies arrested 46-year-old Kilsby Feb. 5, 2016, after an 84-year-old woman was found stabbed to death in her garage on County Road 1177 near Aransas Pass.

No motive for the murder was established by law enforcement, but further details came out during the trial.

“The sheriff’s department did a good job investigating it. He gave a confession to the Texas Rangers and the sheriff’s department. Marcelino (Rodriguez) did a great job presenting the case,” District Attorney Sam Smith said.

The murder had left many in the community wondering what would lead Kilsby to commit such an act. According to Smith, though, Kilsby didn’t have a motive.

“Not a rational one, no. Of course there’s never a reason to murder someone,” Smith said. “She came home and it’s our belief he was in the house and he killed her so she couldn’t identify him to authorities.”

As for what Kilsby was doing in the home, that question may go unanswered.

“From what he told us, he admitted to the killing but there was no rational explanation for him being there and certainly no reason for him to kill an 84-year-old woman,” Smith said. “He did not have an extensive criminal history.”

Kilsby’s confession was the main piece of evidence relied upon.

“It was the confession, and there were other things, some DNA evidence,” Smith said.

Kilsby did not take the stand to testify during the trial.

He will now head to a Texas State prison where he’ll live until at least age 76.

“He has to serve a flat 30 years before he’s eligible for parole. That doesn’t mean he gets parole, he just won’t be considered for 30 calendar years,” Smith said.
