The trial for one of four inmates charged with murder in the October 2017 slayings of four employees at Pasquotank Correctional Institute is slated to begin in October in Dare County.
Mikel Brady’s capital murder trial is scheduled for Oct. 7, nearly two years after the Oct. 12 incident in which four prison employees were killed at PCI during a failed escape attempt.
Killed in the escape attempt were correction enterprises manager Veronica “Ronnie” Darden, 50; corrections officers Justin Smith, 35, and Wendy Shannon, 49; and maintenance mechanic Geoffrey Howe, 31.
In addition to Brady, three other inmates are charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the prison workers’ deaths. They include Wisezah Buckman, Seth Frazier and Jonathan Monk. The District Attorney’s Office is seeking the death penalty against all four inmates.
Although the trial is not being held in Pasquotank County, it is still taking place within the 1st Judicial District. Brady’s attorneys, who requested a change of venue, had asked that the trial be held outside of the 1st Judicial District.
At the time of the murders of the four prison workers, Brady was serving a prison sentence for the attempted first-degree murder of a state trooper in Durham County.
Buckman was serving a sentence for second-degree murder in Mecklenburg County. Monk was in prison serving a sentence for attempted first-degree murder in Cumberland County. Frazier was serving a sentence for first-degree burglary in Onslow County.
