Timothy Callahan and David Young Sentenced in 2017 MO Slayings of James Nance and Janet Nance

2 Men Arrested in Ohio in Deaths of Elderly Missouri Couple

A southern Missouri prosecutor says he will seek the death penalty against two men accused of killing an elderly couple during a robbery.

ELLINGTON, Mo. (AP) — A southern Missouri prosecutor will seek the death penalty against two men accused of killing an elderly couple during a robbery, he said Monday.

Timothy Callahan, 44, of Farmington, Missouri, and David Young, 67, of Ironton, Missouri, were arrested Saturday without incident at a motel in Deerfield Township, Ohio, near Cincinnati. Both were charged with two counts each of first-degree murder.

Reynolds County, Missouri, prosecutor Michael Randazzo said in an interview with The Associated Press that he will file additional charges of armed criminal action, robbery and assault against both men, who are jailed without bond in Ohio awaiting extradition. Randazzo said there was evidence the crime was premeditated and he planned to pursue the death penalty.

The men are accused in the shootings of 86-year-old James Nance, his 72-year-old wife, Janet, and a 73-year-old friend of the family on Oct. 18 at the Nance home near Ellington, Missouri, about 125 miles southwest of St. Louis. The third victim was shot twice in the head but survived.

Young was on probation after pleading guilty in 2016 to financial exploitation of the elderly or disabled in Pulaski County, according to Missouri Case Net, the state's online court reporting system. He was arrested again in September and charged with scamming an elderly couple out of thousands of dollars by convincing them to write multiple checks for the same job — painting their barn.

"He would drive around looking for decent-looking homes, elderly couples, and try to do work for them," Randazzo said.

Authorities believe the men may have originally planned a similar scam on the Nances. Randazzo said it appeared they had contacted the couple about doing work at their home, but ultimately decided instead to rob James Nance.

Randazzo said the robbery was in progress when Janet Nance and her friend returned home from a shopping trip and encountered the gunmen.

A man accused to killing a Reynolds County couple and shooting a third person has been ordered to stand trial. His accomplice will also stand trail.

David Young, 68 of Ironton, appeared Wednesday, Feb. 28, before Associate Circuit Judge Benjamin Thompson for a preliminary hearing on two Class A felonies of first-degree murder, three unclassified felonies of armed criminal action and Class A felonies of first-degree assault and first-degree robbery.

Young did not appear in court. Young provided the court with a waiver for the hearing. He will appear at 9 a.m. April 5 before Cirucit Judge Sidney Pearson III for arraignment on charges.

Timothy Callahan, 44, of Farmington, the other person accused in the triple shooting, appeared before Thompson on Feb. 13 for preliminary hearing. Callahan also waived having a preliminary hearing. Callahan appeared in Reynolds County Court Tuesday morning before Judge Pierson for arraignment.

The men are accused in the shootings of 86-year-old James Nance, his 72-year-old wife, Janet, and a 73-year-old friend of the family Oct. 18 at the Nance home on Highway 106, about five miles outside Ellington. The third victim, Arlene Barber, was shot twice in the head but survived. She provided authorities with vehicle and suspect descriptions.

Young and Callahan were taken into custody Oct. 28 at a motel in the Deerfield Township in Ohio.

Young was on probation after pleading guilty in 2016 to financial exploitation of the elderly or disabled in Pulaski County, according to Missouri Case Net, the state’s online court reporting system. He was arrested again in September and charged with scamming an elderly couple out of thousands of dollars by convincing them to write checks for the same job — painting their barn.

The Nances were allegedly targeted. The two men had planned to rob the elderly couple.

While the robbery was in progress, Janet Nance and Arlene Barber returned home from a shopping trip and encountered the gunmen. At this time, the Nances and Barber were all shot in the back of the head with a .22-caliber revolver. Young and Callahan then fled from the scene.

Man convicted of murder of Reynolds County couple dies at Potosi Correctional Center crime and court

    By Bobby Radford
    Daily Journal

An area man who lived without parole for the 2017 murder of a Reynolds County couple died this week, according to the Missouri Department of Corrections (DOC).

On Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m., David Young, a 72-year-old Ironton criminal imprisoned at the Potosi Correctional Center, was pronounced dead at Washington County Memorial Hospital, a DOC press release said.

Young had been serving multiple sentences since being received in the DOC system on November 9, 2018.

Young’s longest-running sentence was life without parole. The man received his sentence in September after a jury convicted him of two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action, first-degree assault and first-degree theft.

Additionally, Young was serving 15 years for three counts of financial abuse of veterans in Pulaski County, four years for leaving the scene of an accident, and four years for passing bad checks in St. François County.

An autopsy will be conducted soon, the DoC’s press release said.

Young was charged with the October 18, 2017 murders of James and Janet Nance. A Reynolds County couple sustained gunshot wounds to their heads at their rural home with an elderly woman who reportedly survived.

Timothy Callahan, 49, of Potosi, was also charged with the murders. He pleaded guilty to similar charges filed against Young in October 2018 and also received a life sentence in prison without parole.

According to court documents, on October 18, 2017, Young and Callahan went to the Nance couple’s home on Highway 106, about five miles outside Ellington, to rob James Nance.

While the robbery was going on, Nance’s wife and her friend reached the house when the couple and the woman were shot in the head around 4 pm.

Janet Nance, 72, died after being airlifted to St. Louis Hospital on the day of the shooting. James Nance, 86, died a few days later from his injuries on October 21, 2017.

The second female shooting victim, age 73, was able to talk to early investigators about what happened despite her serious injuries. Prosecutors at the time said the woman provided investigators with information that helped law enforcement track down suspects, as well as what happened at the crime scene.

According to the Reynolds County Sheriff’s Office, three victims were shot “execution-style” and the surviving female victim was shot twice in the head during the attempted robbery. The sheriff said the killers only got a few thousand dollars.

According to investigators, two witnesses saw a blue car matching the description of the escape vehicle leaving Nance’s home. It was seen turning to Route F and heading north. Later that evening, a blue 1998 Pontiac Sunfire was towed near the Dent County town of Boss. Court documents say the vehicle was owned and operated by Young.

Witnesses said they saw Young traveling with a man named Callahan the next day. A witness said Young had said Callahan shot three people in the back of the head and that one person had to be shot twice because they “won’t be dead.”

Court documents indicate that Young was at home when the shooting took place.

Investigators found the Pontiac Sunfire on October 21, 2017 at Young’s last known address in the 1300 block of Trap Rock Road in Ironton. Officers interviewed Young’s girlfriend, who also lived at the home. The woman told investigators that the last time she saw Young was on October 19, 2017 and that she was to appear in Gasconade County Court on October 20, 2017 on charges of felony financial abuse of an elderly or disabled person. Man.

According to that probable cause statement, Young attempted to pay a St. Francois County couple $4,800 to repair a barn, which the insurance company said should have cost about $1,300. Because Young did not appear in court on the charges, he has an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest, along with nationwide extradition.

On October 26, 2017, investigators learned that Young and Callahan were staying at the Red Cedar Lodge in Bonne Terre. Officers spoke with motel staff and reviewed surveillance video that confirmed the two suspects had stayed at the hotel and checked out in the early morning hours of October 26, 2017. Surveillance video from the motel showed Young and Callahan traveling in the U-. Tote hired by Callahan at Poplar Bluff due to be returned the day before in St. Louis.

Police say the U-Haul was returned to a dealer near Cincinnati, Ohio, on October 27, 2017. Young’s daughter, who lived in the Cincinnati area, confirmed that Young and Callahan were staying at a motel in Deerfield Township, Ohio.

On the morning of October 28, 2017 – at the request of the Missouri State Highway Patrol – the Warren County Ohio Tactical Team executed a search warrant at the Best Western Mason Inn, where both Callahan and Young were located. Young was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant, and Callahan was held to have an interest in the Nance murders and assault.

In an interview with Missouri State Highway Patrol investigators and the Reynolds County Sheriff’s Office on October 27, 2017, it was reported that Callahan admitted that he and Young had traveled to Nance’s home on October 18, 2017. Robbery.

According to court records, Callahan told investigators that he and Young – armed with a .22 caliber revolver and 9mm handgun – took Young’s Pontiac Sunfire home where they later stole cash from James Nance.

Callahan said he then shot James Nance, Janet Nance and the third victim in the back of the head with a .22 caliber revolver, after which he and Young fled the scene.
