Sandra Vasquez Sentenced to 15 Years for Robbery and Engaging in Organized Crime in 2016 TX Murder of Breanna Wood

Man accused of killing Breanna Wood faces capital murder, abuse of corpse charges

    The Corpus Christi Caller-Times

A man who's been in jail for nearly a year in connection with a Corpus Christi's woman's death is facing new charges.

Joseph Tejeda, 27, was re-indicted Thursday on an additional four counts: capital murder, engaging in organized criminal activity, tapering or fabricating physical evidence with intent to impair and the abuse of a corpse, online court records show.

He's accused of killing 21-year-old Breanna Wood, who went missing in October 2016.

Tejeda was first indicted in March on a murder charge, a first degree.

Prosecutors sought the capital murder count based off a section of the law that involves a murder done for remuneration, which means a killing done for payment or the promise of payment, according to the Texas Penal Code.

Capital murder carries only two punishment options: life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

Nueces County prosecutors declined to comment about the case Thursday but announced a news conference would be held Friday.

Wood's mother, Fallon Wood, filed a missing person report for her daughter with the Corpus Christi Police Department in October 2016 after she was last seen in a convenience store with Tejeda on Oct. 11.

Her remains were found on Jan. 3 in an abandoned trailer off State Highway 666 near Robstown after being led there by an inmate who said he was paid to hide her body. Another inmate told police Tejeda said he shot Wood in the head, then broke her arms and raped her corpse.

As of Thursday evening, Tejeda's bail had not been updated to reflect the newest charges. His bail currently totals more than $1 million because he's also facing an unrelated burglary case.

Nueces County prosecutors name seven in connection with Breanna Wood's death

    The Corpus Christi Caller-Times

Seven people have been indicted in connection with the death of 21-year-old Breanna Wood.

Nueces County prosecutors made the announcement Friday morning at the courthouse.

Previously, only one man -Joseph Tejeda- had been charged in the killing. He's spent nearly a year in jail awaiting a trial.

In addition to new charges for Tejeda, who now faces capital murder, a grand jury indicted six people for crimes related to Wood’s death.

Sandra Vasquez, 42, was charged with capital murder, engaging in organized criminal activity and aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

Christopher John Gonzalez, who is wanted, was charged with capital murder and engaging in organized criminal activity.

Magdalena Yvette Carvajal and Tejeda's mother Rosalinda Musella were charged with tampering with physical evidence and are both wanted.

Theodore Allen, AKA Ted Allen, was charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

Tejeda has four counts: capital murder, engaging in organized criminal activity, tapering or fabricating physical evidence with intent to impair and abuse of a corpse.

Capital murder carries only two punishment options: life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

District Attorney Mark Gonzalez said prosecutors will seek the death penalty against Tejeda and Vasquez.

Wood's mother, Fallon Wood, filed a missing person report for her daughter with the Corpus Christi Police Department in October 2016 after she was last seen in a convenience store with Tejeda on Oct. 11, 2016.

Woods remains were discovered on Jan. 3 in an abandoned trailer off State Highway 666 near Robstown. An inmate who said he was paid to hide her body led law enforcement there. Another inmate told police Tejeda said he shot
Wood in the head, broke her arms and defiled her corpse.

On Jan. 9, a murder warrant naming Tejeda was signed by a justice of the peace, and he was indicted on the initial murder charge in March.

Capital murder suspect Vasquez gets lawyers as Wood family, friends grieve

    By Eleanor Dearman
    The Corpus Christi Caller-Times

One year ago Wednesday, law enforcement found Breanna Wood's body in an abandoned trailer off State Highway 666, near Robstown.

On Wednesday, a woman who could face the death penalty for crimes related to Wood's death appeared in the 105th District Court before Judge Jack Pulcher, who assigned attorneys to defend her. Later, friends gathered at the home of Fallon Wood, Breanna's mother, for a candlelight vigil.

A small garden adorned with gold and purple lights sat in the corner of the yard, topped with a statue of an angel sitting upon of some of Woods' ashes.

Around two dozen people stood outside on the brisk January evening, some wearing purple shirts bearing Wood's photo, holding candles and balloons.

"I love you more Breanna. Always," Fallon Wood, Breanna's mother said to the crowd.

After a prayer and a rendition of "Hallelujah," everyone released the balloons, with a purple feather and photo of Breanna Wood attached to each.

One year ago, an inmate — who told police he was paid to hide the body — directed them to an 18-by-18-by-24-inch box covered with a white sheet. Wood's body was inside, wrapped in heavy plastic, according to an arrest affidavit.

On Wednesday, Sandra Vasquez appeared in Pulcher's courtroom.

Vasquez is one of seven people charged for crimes related to Wood's death. She was indicted Dec. 28 for capital murder, murder, engaging in organized criminal activity and aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

Her arraignment is expected later in January.

Prosecutors announced in late December they are seeking the death penalty against her and Joseph Tejeda, who is charged with capital murder while remuneration, engaging in organized criminal activity, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse.

During that same announcement, it was said Christopher John Gonzalez, 28, is also charged with capital murder and engaging in organized criminal activity.

Gregorio Rolando Cruz, 37; Magdalena Yvette Carvajal, 33; and Tejeda's mother, Rosalinda Musella, 47; were charged with tampering with physical evidence.

Theodore Allen, also known as Ted Allen, 65, was charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

Vasquez's charges stem from an Oct. 11, 2016, offense in which Vasquez is accused of conspiring with Gonzalez to have Tejeda shoot Wood in lieu of killing Tejeda or having him killed. Because the slaying of wood was in lieu of Tejada's slaying, Vasquez's capital murder charge carries the distinction of "while remuneration."

The aggravated robbery charge, which is a separate indictment, dates back to Sept. 21, 2016. Vasquez, working alone or with Allen, is accused of threatening Wood or placing her "in fear of imminent bodily injury or death" while committing theft.

"We can't really go into the facts of the case at this point in time, but I can assure that she played a major role in the murder of Ms. Wood, and that's one of the the reasons why we charged her with capital murder and another reason why we're going to seek the death penalty," District Attorney Mark Gonzalez said following Wednesday's hearing.

Report: Corpus Christi capital murder suspect wants facial tattoos removed before trial

    By Fares Sabawi
    mySanAntonio.com

Before he goes to trial to dispute a murder accusation, a Corpus Christi man is requesting to have his face tattoos removed, according to KIII report.

Joseph Tejeda, who is facing the death penalty for the death of Breanna Wood, made his request through his attorneys in a hearing on Thursday.

Tejeda, 27, has several tattoos on his face, including on his hairline, above each eyebrow, on his left cheek, and on his chin.

His attorneys asked District Judge Jack Pulcher if he would allow them to hire a cosmetologist to remove the tattoos, according to the TV station.

Pulcher denied the request, according to the report, and told the attorneys he'll consider the issue after they become certified to defend a capital murder suspect. The judge also rejected attorney requests to lower his $1,000,000 bond or allow him out of jail.

Tejeda was initially indicted on murder, but was re-indicted in December on capital murder. He's also charged with engaging in organized criminal activity, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse.

Wood, 21, went missing in October of 2016 after she was last seen with Tejeda in a convenience store, authorities said.

After getting tips from Nueces County Jail inmates, Corpus Christi police found Wood's body stuffed in a box near an abandoned trailer in Robstown, officials said.

One inmate reportedly told police Tejeda told him he shot Wood in the back of the head, broke her arms and had sex with her corpse.

The trial is expected to happen later this year.

Third suspect accused in Breanna Wood case won't face death penalty

    By Alexandria Rodriguez
    The Corpus Christi Caller-Times

One of three accused of capital murder in the death of Breanna Wood won't face the death penalty.

Nueces County District Attorney Mark Gonzalez said Monday he would not seek the death penalty for Christopher Gonzalez. Gonzalez is charged with capital murder along with two others, Sandra Vasquez and Joseph Tejeda.. Four others have been indicted on various other charges related to the case.

Christopher Gonzalez, 28, appeared Monday before 105th District Judge Jack Pulcher for a status hearing.

Wood's mother, Fallon Wood, was the only person in attendance for the hearing.

Christopher Gonzalez also met with one of his attorneys, Hector Gonzalez. Neither the defendant, his attorney or the district attorney are related.

Hector Gonzalez also requested evidence be turned over to the defense from prosecutors.

The defense also requested a copy of a recorded interview between Christopher Gonzalez and prosecutors be handed over as well.

"We will turn over all statements and notes," Mark Gonzalez said, adding 60 CDs with evidence and other material would be given to the defense on Friday.

Capital murder carries only two punishment options: life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

Prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty against Vasquez and Tejeda.

An indictment alleges Vasquez and Gonzalez conspired to have Tejeda shoot Wood in lieu of killing Tejeda or having him killed.

Wood's body was found just over a year ago in an abandoned trailer off State Highway 666, near Robstown. Law enforcement was led there by an inmate who said he was paid to hide her body. A second inmate told police Tejeda said he shot Wood in the head, broke her arms and defiled her corpse.

Christopher Gonzalez was charged with capital murder, murder and engaging in organized criminal activity. His bail was set at $1 million.

    KRIS Corpus Christi News

On Thursday, January 18, suspect Joseph Tejeda pleaded not guilty to capital murder. He will remain in jail with a bond set at $1 million.

Prosecutors said they will seek the death penalty against Tejeda, who has been appointed an attorney certified to handle death penalty cases.

Rosalinda Musella pleads not guilty to tampering with evidence

    By Eleanor Dearman
    The Corpus Christi Caller-Times

A woman accused of tampering with physical evidence in the killing of Breanna Wood pleaded not guilty to the charge Tuesday.

Rosalinda Musella, the mother of Joseph Tejeda, appeared in Jack Pulcher's 105th District Court where she entered her plea.

Wood went missing in October 2016. She was last seen with Tejeda at a convenience store. Law enforcement found her remains in January in an abandoned trailer off State Highway 666 near Robstown.

Musella's indictment accuses her of working alone or with other defendants in the case to conceal Wood's body.

Musella is one of seven people indicted for crimes related to Wood's death. Three — Tejeda, Sandra Vasquez and Christopher Gonzalez — are facing capital murder charges.

Murder suspect Joseph Tejeda wants civilian clothes for court hearings

    By Eleanor Dearman
    The Corpus Christi Caller-Times

A man who is facing the death penalty in slaying of a 21-year-old woman won't be able to wear civilian clothes during court hearings.

Joseph Tejeda is charged with capital murder and other crimes in the death of Breanna Wood, whose body was recovered in a box near Robstown in January 2017. He appeared in Judge Jack Pulcher's 105th District Court for a status hearing, shackled at the waist and wearing orange jail clothing.

His attorneys have filed more than 40 motions that are expected to be heard in increments in the coming months. The first 10 were heard. Most were granted.

Attorneys for Tejeda asked he be allowed to appear in court wearing "civilian clothes" and that he not be shackled. They pointed to the amount of media coverage the case already has received.

"All I'm asking for at this point, and I think it would go a long way to kind of level the playing field, is to let him come in civilian clothes," attorney Fred Jimenez said to the court.

Defense lawyers said it's not necessary to have him shackled during hearings, maintaining the courtroom could manage security issues.

"I think it's important that we not forget that he still has a presumption of innocence,'" said Dee Ann Torres, another defense attorney.

Prosecutor Reyaldo Peña argued Tejeda "deserves to be shackled, just like any other defendant that comes before (Pulcher) that's not in trial."

    The judge denied the motion.

Tejeda, 27, is one of seven people indicted for crimes related to Wood's death. However, he and two others — Sandra Vasquez and Christopher Gonzalez — are also charged with capital murder. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Tejeda and Vasquez.

Wood's remains were found in early January 2017 after she was last seen with Tejeda at a convenience store in October 2016.

Fallon Wood, Breanna Wood's mother, was present for the hearing. Outside the courtroom, the Corpus Christi woman told reporters she was overwhelmed by the two motions.

"He deserves to be shackled," Wood said, later adding Tejeda "needs to stay in orange."

"Inside, I'm still just shaking and my heart is just pounding," she said.
