Two More Nigerians Executed In Saudi Arabia, Over 15 Others To Follow

    By The Eagle Online

Nearly four months after a Nigerian was executed in Saudi Arabia for alleged drug-related offence, two more have been killed in a similar manner, sending fears to no fewer than 15 other Nigerians being detained in parts of the Middle East country, Saturday Vanguard is reporting.

Prison Sources in Saudi Arabia confirmed to the newspaper that the two Nigerians, whose names have been given as Ibrahim Ciroma and Maimidu Issah, both from the Northern part of Nigeria, were executed last week.

The prison source said while one was brutally terminated on Tuesday, the other Nigerian faced the hangman’s noose on Thursday.

The summary execution of the two Nigerians came nearly two weeks after a prison source in Medina leaked the names of 15 Nigerians, who are currently on death row at the Medina Prison, awaiting the long knife any moment from now.

Saturday Vanguard had on January 13 this year published a Save-Our-Soul letter despatched by the embattled Nigerians awaiting execution in Riyadh to President Muhammadu Buhari and pleaded with him to intervene and save their lives by repatriating them home to save their jail terms in their fatherland or be killed at home and given decent burials instead of being killed as cows in a foreign land.

In response, the Federal Government, through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, affirmed the determination of the government to wade into the matter and save the lives of the imprisoned Nigerians in Saudi Arabia.

The minister promised to dispatch officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Riyadh to liaise with their Saudi counterparts so as to prevent the inmates from being executed.

“The Minister of Foreign Affairs has directed the Nigerian Mission in Riyadh to look into the detained suspects’ case urgently,” the Spokesman for the Ministry, Dr. Tope Adeleye Elias-Fatile, said in response to Saturday Vanguard’s enquiry on the matter.

“The Nigerian Government will continue to engage the Saudi authorities in negotiations so that they will not be executed,” the Foreign Ministry assured.
However, more than two weeks after the report was made to the Nigerian Government and with no action coming from Abuja, the additional two Nigerian drug suspects were sent to their early graves.

It was learnt that following the directive of the Federal Government to the embassy in Riyadh to intervene and save the troubled Nigerians from death row, the Nigerian embassy simply requested for the file numbers of the inmates from the prison officials and nothing else was done about it.

One of the suspects told Saturday Vanguard on Friday that an indication that more of the detainees might be executed any moment from now was that their files had been removed from the prison in Medina and its computer system.

“For your information, the removal of the inmate files from the system in Saudi means that the affected persons could be summarily executed any moment from now. Please plead with President Buhari and the government of Nigeria to save us from being killed this wicked way. Delay is dangerous,” the suspect pleaded.

Saudi Arabia kills another Nigerian for drug trafficking

    By Soni Daniel
    The Vanguard

Apparently taking advantage of the delay by Nigeria to intervene in the alleged drug deals undertaken by Nigerians in the country, Saudi Arabia has executed one more Nigerian for drug-related offences.

Impeccable Vanguard sources confirmed that the suspect, whose name was given as Adam Idris Abubakar, was killed by the authorities on Tuesday, bringing the number of Nigerian drug detainees so far executed in the last four months to four.

Two of the suspects were killed last November.

A source close to the suspects told Vanguard that the Nigerian Embassy in Riyadh had been informed of the latest execution and that the embassy was embarrassed by the action of the Middleeast country, having begun discussions with them to spare the lives of the suspects.

The killing of Abubakar has reduced the number of Nigerian drug suspects to 13 out of the 15, who are being detained in Medinna Prison in Saudi Arabia.

Last year, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, gave the assurance that the Nigerian Government had begun discussions with the foreign country to save the lives of the embattled Nigerians. Last week, Onyeama said, “We have made very strong intercessions with the government of those countries to review the cases and of course, not to execute those prisoners. But there is a limit, these are sovereign countries and they have processes and laws.

“As far as Saudi Arabia is concerned, it has been ongoing, we have been intervening at various levels with the Saudi government to spare the lives of those citizens and a number of NGOs have been working with us in order to get those Nigerian citizens off the death row,” the minister said.

Saudi execution sparks protest in Jakarta

    Straits Time

An Indonesian activist speaking during a protest in front of the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Jakarta yesterday against the beheading of Indonesian migrant worker Muhammad Zaini Misrin, 53, on Sunday.

Zaini, who had worked as a driver in Saudi Arabia, was sentenced to death in 2008 for murdering his employer in 2004.

Indonesian organization Migrant Care, however, said it suspected that he had been forced to plead guilty.

The Indonesian Foreign Ministry said Indonesia was shocked to learn that the execution had been carried out even though an appeal process had just started.

Saudi Arabia executes 48 people in 2018, half for nonviolent drug crimes - HRW

    By Sarah Dadouch
    Reuters

RIYADH - Human Rights Watch said Saudi Arabia has executed 48 people so far in 2018, half of them for nonviolent drug crimes.

Others convicted of drug crimes remain on death row, the rights group reported on Wednesday.

In an interview with Time Magazine last month, reformist Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in a few areas Saudi laws can be changed to life in prison sentences instead of executions.

“We are working for two years through the government and also the Saudi parliament to build new laws in that area. And we believe it will take one year, maybe a little bit more, to have it finished,” he told Time Magazine.

Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at HRW, said: “Any plan to limit drug executions needs to include improvements to a justice system that doesn’t provide for fair trials.”

Saudi Arabia has gone through a series of reforms in the last year, but international human rights groups urge the kingdom to make changes to its treatment of human rights advocates, to stop executions and cancel its pervasive system of male guardianship.

Saudi Arabia has carried out nearly 600 executions since the beginning of 2014, over 200 of them in drug cases, HRW said.

Man executed for attacks on banks

    By Habib Toumi
    Gulfnews

Manama: Saudi Arabia has executed a Saudi man over armed attacks on banks in the Red Sea city of Jeddah 16 years ago.

The interior ministry said that Jameel Bin Mohammad Al Aseeri had three accomplices, two Saudi nationals and one foreigner, during the attacks.

The four gangsters covered their faces and stormed Al Rajhi Bank, fired in the air to scare the customers and staff. They dragged the manager out of his office and forced him and the tellers to give them the cash they had.

According to the case documents, they left the bank with SR85,000 (Dh82,243) and $4,000 (Dh14,690).

In the second attack, they raided another bank, fired in the air and made away with SR190,000, Saudi daily Okaz reported on Monday.

In his confession, the ring leader said he had provided his accomplices with guns after they agreed to storm the first bank.

He said he was the one who fired bullets to scare the staff and the customers and that his accomplices took the money from the tellers.

Police said the main suspect had criminal precedents, unlike his accomplices.

The first court to review their cases sentenced all four defendants to death, but the verdict was challenged and another court decided the death sentence for the ring leader and 25 years in prison for the others.

However, the verdict was appealed a second time and the court ruled 25 years for the ring leader and 20 for the accomplices.

The case was taken to the high court and the judges ruled the death penalty for the leader and 25 years for the others.

Al Aseeri was executed on Sunday after all legal avenues were exhausted.

Nigerian national executed in Saudi for drug smuggling

A Nigerian national has been executed in Saudi Arabia after being convicted of smuggling narcotic drugs into the country.

Abu Duraimi Oyida Ajibula was executed in Madinah on Tuesday for smuggling cocaine in his intestines, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

The kingdom’s interior ministry said the court convicted the smuggler and that the sentence was endorsed by the appeal and supreme courts. A royal order was also issued to execute the sentence.

The ministry reiterated that the Saudi government is “keen on combating narcotics due to their great harm to individuals and the society”, and warned violators of punishment according to Sharia law.

The kingdom’s laws on drug smuggling are among the strictest in the world and it has carried out multiple executions of those convicted of the crime.

Some of those executed for smuggling last year include five Saudi nationals, four Pakistani nationals, three Yemenis, Two Egyptians, one Syrian national and a Palestinian national.

Saudi Arabia executes seven people in one day

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday executed seven death row inmates who had been convicted of murder and drug trafficking, state media reported.

The ultra-conservative kingdom has one of the world's highest rates of execution, with suspects convicted of terrorism, homicide, rape, armed robbery and drug trafficking facing the death penalty.

Two Saudi Arabian citizens and three nationals of Chad were executed after being sentenced to death for the kidnapping and murder of a Pakistani security guard, with the alleged intent of robbing the warehouse he was guarding, according to the state-run SPA agency.

Another Saudi Arabian was executed for murder after setting a man on fire, SPA reported.

A Lebanese national was executed for attempting to smuggle captagon into the kingdom, SPA said. Captagon, a drug popular among fighters in war zones, usually blends amphetamines, caffeine and other substances in pill form.

Tuesday's executions bring to 73 the total number of people put to death in the kingdom this year, according to a tally by AFP.

Saudi Arabia had the third highest execution rate in the world in 2017, after China and Iran, according to Amnesty International.

Rights experts have repeatedly raised concerns about the fairness of trials in the kingdom, governed under a strict form of Islamic law. The government says the death penalty is a deterrent for further crime.

In April, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, next in line to the throne, suggested the kingdom would consider changing the penalty from death to life in certain cases except murder, in an interview with Time Magazine.
