Deputies called to suspected shooter’s home 39 times over seven years

    By Yaron Steinbuch
    The New York Post

Before Nikolas Cruz carried out his mass killing at a Florida high school this week, police responded to his home 39 times over a seven-year period, according to disturbing new documents.

Details about the calls to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office — obtained from police records by CNN — were not immediately available and it was impossible to determine if all involved Cruz.

But the nature of the emergencies at his Parkland home included “mentally ill person,” “child/elderly abuse,” “domestic disturbance” and “missing person,” KTLA reported.

And a schoolmate, Brody Speno, told the network that cops were called to Cruz’s home “almost every other week.”

“Something wasn’t right about him,” Speno told CNN. “He was off.”

Speno said he knew Cruz from elementary school and described him as “an evil kid” who was “always getting in trouble.”

Cruz — who posted images of himself on Instagram posing with guns and knives — has confessed to killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland and made an alarming online comment about a recent mass shooting.

“Man I can do so much better,” he wrote.

Confessed Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz intends to plead guilty, Broward County Public Defender Howard Finkelstein said Friday. Finkelstein said the object is to avoid a painful trial and for Cruz not to get the death penalty.

Prosecutors could not immediately be reached for comment.

Should prosecutors accept alleged Florida shooter's offer to plead guilty if death penalty option is dropped?

    By The Jersey Journal

The death penalty has been the subject of intense debate in this country for decades.

The topic is coming up again because the attorney for Nikolas Cruz, the alleged gunman in the shooting massacre at a Parkland, Fl. high school, says his client is willing to plead guilty if prosecutors agree not to pursue the death penalty.

The attorney says doing so will save the "traumatized community'' from reliving the nightmare during a protracted trial.

However, opponents of the move say this would keep Cruz from facing the full consequences of his actions and facing some of his survivors in court.

That is a good question, if prosecutors agree the plead ,it will show a weaker justice who will accept any kind of murderer. For me Cruz is a mass murderer and he deserves dp.

Charles I highly doubt the state will agree to a plea, case is a slam dunk so it wouldn't be that hard to get a conviction. There are only two ways I see that Cruz doesn't face a death penalty trial. A) He dies before trial B) If the state believes that his mental health doesn't meet their standards. From what I've seen his mental health is good enough where that won't be an issue.

also of course the fact that this public conversation is being held is a powerful reason to maintain the dp. Otherwise the shooter would have no reason to even think about pleading.

No dp for Cruz will mean, there is no limit for mass murder.

School board knew of Parkland shooter's obsession with guns and violence, documents show

Warning signs present in Cruz's education plan prior to Douglas enrollment

    By Bob Norman
    News4JAX.com

PARKLAND, Fla. - Exclusive documents obtained by Local 10 News show the education plan for school shooter Nikolas Cruz; a plan that left clear signals that should have alerted officials of the danger he posed to the community, according to a former Broward County ESE specialist who reviewed the information at the station's request.

"What you're discussing from the plan seems to be the profile of a mass killer," said Dottie Provenzano, who retired from Broward County Public Schools in 2017.

The education plan shows that, even as Cruz was making progress at the Cross Creek School for emotionally and behaviorally disabled students in late 2015, but that he was known by administrators to have an obsession with guns and violence. Here are some passages from the plan:

    • "Nikolas at times, will be distracted by inappropriate conversations of his peers if the topic is about guns, people being killed or the armed forces," wrote Cross Creek educators.
    • "He is fascinated by the use of guns and often speaks of weapons and the importance of 'having weapons to remain safe in this world.'"
    • "He becomes preoccupied with things such as current events regarding wars and terrorist [sic]."

Provenzano said that in 42 years of dealing with exceptional students she never saw a document with such obvious signs that a student might resort to violence.

"These are significant red flags that this is a very troubled young man," she said.

The plan also noted that Cruz had been involved in two serious incidents, recent at the time: "He is very easily influenced and was coerced to jump off the back of the school bus by a peer. Nikolas has difficulty with wanting to have friends and engaging in following the negative behaviors of those peers.

He also has poor judgment in social situations. Recently he was punched numerous times by a peer for using racial slurs towards that peer. … He refused to accept that the comments made by him caused the peers reaction."

The plan shows that Cruz was on psychiatric medication at that time, though it doesn't specify the medication, and that he had "limited social judgment and poor insight which affects his progress in the general education setting."

Despite all of those concerns, his transfer from Cross Creek to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, a school of about 3,300 students, was authorized, and records show he enrolled full-time at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in January 2016.

The documents also show that Cruz had been making progress and doing well in classes at Cross Creek School prior to the move. He was even volunteering at the YMCA and wanted to return to a "regular school" like Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School instead of Cross Creek, which he believed was for students who were "not smart." It mentions family counseling involving his mother, who died this past November.

"Nikolas' mother expressed that she feels that he is doing well at this school," the plan noted. "She is so happy with his academic progress as well as behavioral progress. He is using profanity less at home. He gives his daily note to mom most of the time. His behavior at home has improved. Nikolas is maturing nicely and is calming down. He would like more homework and prove that he can do the work. He is learning to do his own laundry/chores at home."

But records indicate that once the move was made to Marjory Stoneman Douglas, his behavior deteriorated, with several disciplinary actions, including for fighting and assault that led to his ouster from the school in February last year.

Though his behavior had been improving at Cross Creek, Cruz had two serious incidents, one in which he was talked into jumping off the back of a school bus, and another in which he was punched numerous times by a peer for using racial slurs.

The documents also show Cruz was dependent on psychiatric medication and continued to struggle greatly in social situations. Despite those issues, he was still enrolled at Douglas in January 2016 when his behavior rapidly deteriorated.

"If you make a movement with somebody like this, you better have an ironclad system of support to monitor him along the way," Provenzano said.

When asked if she believed Cruz received that support, Provenzano did not hesitate with an answer.

"No, I do not," Provenzano said.

The FBI needs to be held accountable for their inaction. The blood is on their hands. I'm ok with common sense gun control, but the FBI should not be getting a pass.

A top GOP donor says he won't write another check to Republicans until they support an assault weapons ban

Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people at Mary Stoneman High School with a legally purchased AR-15 rifle

    By Michelle Mark
    Business Insider

A major Republican donor issued a remarkable ultimatum on Saturday, vowing to withhold money from GOP candidates unless they support a ban on selling military-style guns to civilians.

"It's the end of the road for me," Al Hoffman Jr., a prominent Florida real-estate developer, told The New York Times. "For how many years now have we been doing this — having these experiences of terrorism, mass killings — and how many years has it been that nothing's been done?"

Hoffman's comments came just days after a gunman opened fire on the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 people and renewing an impassioned national debate on gun control.

The suspected shooter, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, was armed with a legally purchased AR-15, one of the most popular semi-automatic rifles in the US.

That particular rifle is a recurring element in America's deadliest mass shootings, and was used in some variation by the perpetrators of recent massacres in Las Vegas, Nevada; Sutherland Springs, Texas; Orlando, Florida; and Newtown, Connecticut.

Like other semi-automatic firearms, commonly referred to as "assault weapons," the AR-15 was previously banned under a 1994 law that lapsed in 2004.

Gun-control activists have long called for Congress to reinstate the federal assault weapons ban, but Republican lawmakers staunchly refused to do so.

"Enough is enough!" Hoffman told The Times, adding that he hoped to start a movement within the Republican Party. "I will not write another check unless they all support a ban on assault weapons."

Hoffman has previously donated millions to Republican candidates such as ex-Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former President George W. Bush.

The Florida school shooting prompted survivors and activists to mobilise on Saturday, unleashing torrents of anger at lawmakers, the National Rifle Association, and President Donald Trump for lax gun-control regulations.

"To every politician who is taking donations from the NRA, shame on you," Emma Gonzalez, a student who survived the Florida shooting, said in an impassioned speech at a gun-control rally in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday.
