Man arrested in slaying of 81-year-old woman found dead in her Far North Dallas home

    Dallas News

Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the slaying of a woman in Far North Dallas earlier this week.

On Tuesday, Plano police officers were in the 4500 block of Pear Ridge Drive monitoring Billy Kipkorir Chemirmir regarding an offense in that city when they saw him toss items into a dumpster.

The officers arrested Chemirmir, 45, on an unrelated outstanding warrant and found money and jewelry in his possession, as well as a jewelry box containing additional jewelry in the dumpster.

A name on the jewelry box was found to be associated with a Dallas address in the 6600 block of Warm Breeze Lane, where Dallas police conducted a welfare check and found Lu Thi Harris, 81, dead of homicidal violence.

Chemirmir was taken to Dallas police headquarters and interviewed, while other items found in his possession were found to belong to the victim.

Chemirmir has been charged with capital murder and booked into Dallas County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail.

Jewelry Box Tossed In Dumpster Leads To Capital Murder Arrest

    By CBSDFW News

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Arrested on an outstanding warrant, police grew suspicious after finding jewelry and money on Billy Kipkorir Chemirmir, 45, in Plano.

Chemirmir had just tossed some items away in a dumpster.

Sources tell CBS11, Chemirmir is being looked at in connection with several other deaths across multiple cities.

In each case, investigators said it involves an older woman and an attempt to steal from and smother them.

An arrest affidavit from Dallas County details the assault of a 91-year-old woman in Plano where “….the suspect forced his way into the victim’s apartment, told her ‘Go to the bed, don’t fight me.'”

“The victim complied and the suspect put a pillow over her face, causing her to lose consciousness.”

    She survived.

In Fristco, investigators said Chemirmir attacked a 93-year-old woman who also survived, where he, “…knocked her from her walker and to the ground, then placed a pillow over her nose and mouth in an attempt to muffle her screams and smother her…”

“…she began to pray believing she was about to died.”

Regarding the jewelry box case, police searched the dumpster in Dallas’ 4500 block of Pear Ridge, finding a jewelry box… with a name written inside that led them to a murder scene.

The name, Lu Thi Harris, was tied to an address in the 6600 block of Warm Breeze Lane in Dallas.

Officers went to the address to check on the woman, but when they arrived they found the 81-year-old dead from homicidal violence.

Her neighbors are shocked and saddened by her violent death.

“She was so sweet,” one neighbor told CBS 11 News.

Other items found in Chemirmir’s possession were identified as belonging to Harris.

Chemirmir was interviewed by police in custody and charged with Capital Murder.

He remains in Dallas County Jail on a $1,000,000 bail amount.

Plano Police are scheduled to hold a news conference at 1:00 p.m. Friday with more information.

The Collin County DA and Dallas County DA will be there as well.

Man indicted in elderly woman's smothering; hundreds of unattended senior deaths examined

    By CBS News

DALLAS -- A grand jury in Dallas has indicted a man for the murder of an 81-year-old woman found smothered to death with a pillow in March and her jewelry stolen, according to court records. The capital murder charge handed down Tuesday against Billy Chemirmir in the killing of Lu Thi Harris is the first death that the 45-year-old has been formally accused of, but officials in several north Texas cities are investigating whether several other cases with similarities are linked to him.

Investigators are also combing through more than 750 unattended senior deaths dating back to at least 2010 that weren't previously investigated, searching for any possible similarities, officials said during a March press conference.

The string of cases first came to law enforcement attention in October 2017, in Frisco, Texas, where a 93-year-old woman told police a man had come to her retirement community door and identified himself as a maintenance worker. She said when she declined to have any work done the man forced his way into her home, knocked her to the ground, put a pillow over her nose and mouth and tried to suffocate her.

She survived, but the attacker left with several pieces of jewelry.

When Plano police learned of the Frisco attack, they realized it bore similarities to cases they had investigated. Investigators soon identified Chemirmir as a suspect. While conducting surveillance of the suspect, police said they saw Chemirmir throw several items into a trash bin, including a jewelry box with a name inscribed in it.

Investigators determined the box's owner, Harris, likely lived in Dallas, and notified police in that city. When officers responded to Harris' home, they found her dead from apparent suffocation.

Police say a set of keys later found in Chemirmir's vehicle belonged to Harris.

Investigators soon discovered yet another case in Plano with striking similarities. In that case a 91-year-old woman survived an attack in which a man forced her way into her apartment and said "go to bed, don't fight me," just before holding a pillow to her face until she passed out.

Chemirmir has been charged with attempted capital murder in the Frisco attack. Charges have not been filed the Plano cases.

In March, police announced a 24-hour phone tip hotline seeking information about elderly women who died alone in North Texas. During that press conference, police said they had already identified more than 750 deaths in Dallas County alone that investigators intended to reexamine.

"We believe that the way that these crimes were committed, that when you're a senior and you have health care issues, and you're living by yourself, and you do become deceased, that many people would right away think that was natural causes, and there is not a deep investigation into those matters, and so it would be very easy to disguise a crime," Plano Police Chief Gregory Rushin said during a press conference in March.

Chemirmir, 45, is being held in in Dallas County Jail on a $1 million bond. A plea has not been entered in the case.

Black serial killer? Police investigate former nurse for 1K deaths in Texas

    By MO BARNES
    Rolling Out

If Texas law enforcement officials are correct, Billy Chemirmir, 45, a Kenyan immigrant and former nurse, may go down as the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history. Chemirmir was indicted on Monday for capital murder after he was arrested for smothering and stealing the jewelry box of Lu Thi Harris, 81, in Dallas County, Texas.

According to police, this is not the first time that Chemirmir has been involved in a crime against elderly women. He is also under investigation for the attempted capital murder of a 93-year-old woman in Frisco, Texas. Chemirmir allegedly posed as a maintenance worker and gained entry into the woman’s home. The woman told police that he put a pillow over her face in an attempt to smother her. The victim told police she was praying as Chemirmir left her for dead and robbed her of jewelry. In March 2017, police allege that Chemirmir stormed into a 91-year-old woman’s home and assaulted her. The victim claimed that he yelled “go to bed, don’t fight me” before smothering her with a pillow until she lost consciousness. She was revived by first responders in Plano, Texas, and police reported that jewelry was missing from the victim’s home. His vehicle was also seen leaving the scene of another attempted murder of an elderly woman in Collin County, Texas, as he was being watched.

According to the Dallas News, police observed Chemirmir putting items into a garbage dumpster. They were executing a search warrant in relation to another elderly woman who was robbed in the same fashion as previous victims. When they checked the dumpster they found a box of jewelry and a piece of paper that linked to murder victim Lu Thi Harris. Police also found house keys belonging to Harris in Chemirmir’s car.

Officials across North Texas are now reviewing more than a thousand cases of murders and assaults on mostly elderly women to see whether Chemirmir may be connected.

Man charged in deaths of 6 more Dallas-area elderly women

    By Associated Press

DALLAS – Authorities say a Dallas man previously arrested in the death of an 81-year-old woman killed at least six other elderly women whose jewelry and other valuables he stole.

Billy Chemirmir, 46, has now been indicted on six new charges of capital murder in the deaths of elderly women. He is also linked to five other slayings in Collin County.

Chemirmir has been in custody since March 2018 in the death of the 81-year-old. Police said at the time that investigators were reviewing about 750 unattended deaths of elderly women for possible links.

Authorities say he posed as a health care provider or maintenance worker to gain access to the women's apartments and rob them.

His attorney, Phillip Hayes, says this week's charges were a surprise and he hasn't had time to review them.

"There is a point in the history of a society when it becomes so pathologically soft and tender that among other things it sides even with those who harm it, criminals, and does this quite seriously and honestly. Punishing somehow seems unfair to it, and it is certain that imagining ‘punishment’ and ‘being supposed to punish’ hurts it, arouses fear in it." Friedrich Nietzsche
