Accused killer Lois Riess waives right to speedy trial in Florida

Her next court date is scheduled for Oct. 31.

    Star Tribune

The Minnesota woman facing the death penalty in Florida where she is accused of killing a look-alike waived her right to a speedy trial during a court appearance on Wednesday.

Lois Riess, 56, of Blooming Prairie, had been given permission to skip Wednesday’s case management conference hearing in Lee County Court in Fort Myers but was in court for the proceeding.

Judge Joseph Fuller Jr. also granted the prosecution’s motion to require Riess to submit finger, palm and foot prints and set her next court appearance for Oct. 31. A date for the obtaining the prints has not been set.

Riess continues to be held in the Lee County Jail without bond in connection with the death of Pamela Hutchinson.

A Lee County grand jury handed up an indictment of first-degree murder with a firearm on June 6, and the Florida State Attorney’s Office later filed its intent to seek the death penalty. Riess has entered a not guilty plea in writing.

Charges say Riess was in Fort Myers in early April while she was being sought in connection with the March 23 murder of her husband, David, in the couple’s Blooming Prairie home.

Lois Riess drove the couple’s Cadillac Escalade to Florida, where she befriended the 59-year-old Hutchinson at a seaside eatery, according to more than 2,600 pages of documents released last month.

The two women were last seen together at Hutchinson’s rented condo on April 4. Surveillance video caught Riess driving away in Hutchinson’s white Acura the next day. Hutchinson was found fatally shot inside unit 404 of the Marina Village at Snug Harbor condos on April 9.

Riess became the subject of a nationwide hunt. Authorities arrested her on April 19 in South Padre Island, Texas. Charges say Riess targeted Hutchinson because the two women looked alike.

Before Riess was caught, she withdrew $5,000 from Hutchinson’s bank account, used the slain woman’s credit card to pay for a hotel room and room service and drove her car to Texas.

In addition to the murder charge, Riess was indicted on a charge of grand theft and identity theft.

Riess also is facing charges in Minnesota. She has been charged in Dodge County with forging $11,000 in checks from her husband’s business account. The Dodge County Attorney’s Office is waiting for results of a ballistics test to determine if the same weapon was used in both killings before filing murder charges.

New photos reveal Riess' possessions before arrest

The Florida State Attorney's office released more documents that reveal the moments before Lois Riess was taken into custody.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas - New evidence made public by the Florida State Attorney's show pictures of Lois Riess' Motel 6 room in South Padre Island, Texas.

Riess had been on the run for weeks from law enforcement officials after she allegedly shot and killed her husband David Riess in Dodge County, Minnesota. After that, she drove south and is accused of shooting and killing Pamela Hutchinson, her look-alike.

Police said Riess may have killed Hutchinson because they looked similar, making it easier for Riess to assume Hutchinson's identity.

Among the items that Riess had with her at the motel room, Lee County detectives recovered four credit cards that belonged to Pamela Hutchinson, along with her IDs and checkbook.

Also in Riess' possession, police listed finding what they describe as "white towel with Pamela's Sunglasses," further connecting the two women.

Motel 6 receipts from the evidence show Riess' first check in date was April 9 and the room was paid for until April 23. Riess was taken into custody at a nearby restaurant in South Padre Island on the 19th of April.

Police also recovered David Riess' checkbook from the motel room. Lois Riess is wanted by Minnesota authorities after she is suspected of killing her husband and stealing money from his bank account before she fled south.

David Riess' checkbook revealed carbon copies of the checks that Lois Riess wrote to herself, in the amounts that matched the amounts listed in Dodge County, Minnesota court documents.

Two guns were also inside the room. Both Hutchinson and Riess were shot to death.

At this point in Minnesota, Riess has not been charged with the death of her husband. Prosecutors said they are currently waiting for test results to see if the same gun was used to kill both Hutchinson and David Riess.

Prosecutors in Florida are seeking the death penalty for Riess.

Lois Riess pleads guilty to Florida murder, gets life sentence

    By Tim Harlow
    Minneapolis Star Tribune

A southern Minnesota woman charged with killing a woman in Florida while on the run from authorities pleaded guilty to first-degree murder Tuesday and was sentenced to life in prison.

Lois Riess, of Blooming Prairie, was charged with fatally shooting Pamela Hutchinson in a Fort Myers Beach condo in April 2018. Riess drove from Minnesota to Florida after allegedly killing her husband, then killed Hutchinson because she had a similar appearance to Riess, according to a Lee County grand jury indictment.

Prosecutors in Florida had sought the death penalty, but withdrew that possibility and accepted a plea for a life sentence.

"This defendant will never get out of prison," said Flordia State Attorney Amira Fox. "This life sentence … guarantees she will never be free again. It also allows the family of the victim to not have to go through details of this crime at trial."

Riess was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday for a pretrial hearing, but after discussions between prosecutors and her defense team Riess entered the plea for a life sentence, said Rich Montecalvo, the lead prosecutor.

"We had a strong case for guilt," he said. "This is a clean plea with no opportunity for parole or appeal, and the family wanted no chance of her seeing the light of day. This accomplishes that."

Hutchinson's family was on board with the outcome, he said.

Lois Riess pleads guilty, sentenced to life without parole

    KTTC News

KASSON, Minn. (KTTC) -- Lois Riess has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in connection to killing her husband in 2018.

That update coming during a hearing in Kasson Tuesday.

Her sentence will be served in Minnesota, and she has no possibility of parole.

Last December, Riess was convicted in Florida of murder. She agreed to a life prison term in exchange for not receiving the death penalty.

Investigators believe that Lois Riess shot her husband David Riess at their rural Blooming Prairie home in March 2018.

She then fled, eventually ending up in Florida, where she killed Pamela Hutchinson according to authorities. Riess then stole her identity as she was on the run. She was captured later in April in Texas after a nationwide manhunt for her.
