Ernestine Matthews and Lamar Matthews
Anthony Deondrea Cain
Facts of the Crime:
Anthony Cain was sentenced to death in Los Angeles County on January 15, 2010 on all counts for the Feburary 11, 2004 murders of Lamar and Ernestine Matthews, both 75, of Cerritos. The bloodied bodies of the husband and wife were both found in separate rooms of the two-story house where they had planned on spending their retirement years. Cain, who was 28 at the time, became the primary suspect when investigators discovered he had cashed a $6,000 check from the Matthews' bank account the day before they were stabbed to death. Investigators learned that the couple had helped Cain with money and other assistance several times prior to their slaying and the death of the pair shocked friends and family and stunned the normally peaceful neighborhood where they lived. The pair had worked their entire lives with youths in Compton, where they also lived for many years. Ernestine taught in the Compton Unified School District and Lamar was a probation officer. Both were extremely active philanthropists in the community where they had dedicated so much of their hard work and time, friends and family said at the time of their deaths.
