Ala. attorney general's office asks appeals court to speed up review of death penalty case
The Alabama Attorney General's Office has asked the Alabama Supreme Court to order an appellate court to rule on the appeal of a death row inmate whose case has been pending for three years.
Deputy District Attorney Clay Crenshaw said the case has been briefed by both sides and "it's ridiculous" to wait so long for a ruling.
The attorney general's office has filed a petition asking the Supreme Court to order the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to rule on the appeal of Charles Washington. Washington was convicted in the January 2003 beating deaths of 82-year-old Julian McKinnon and his 84-year-old wife, Florence, at their Millbrook home. Washington's case is before the Court of Criminal Appeals on its second round of appeals in state and federal courts.
