Three people are facing first degree murder charges in a Mother’s Day shooting that left one person dead and another wounded.
Mario Benitez, 22, Taquan Brown, 27, Edey Cardenas, 21, were indicted on first degree murder charges on Friday by a grand jury in the murder of 32 year old Daryl Scott and the attempted murder of 23 year old Rejanay Smith.
A fourth defendant, Cheyenne Marron, has also been charged by the State Attorney’s Office, but was not included in the grand jury indictment, the SAO said in a Friday night release. Marron, 22, was one of five arrested by the Fort Myers Police Department on May 16 in connection to the May 13 shooting. Only four of the five arrested have been charged.
Benitez, Brown, and Cardenas were each charged with one count of first degree murder with a firearm, one count of attempted first degree murder with a firearm, one count of robbery with a firearm, and conspiracy to commit robbery. First-degree murder charges can lead to life in prison without parole or potentially the death penalty if convicted.
Marron also faces the robbery and conspiracy charges, but prosecutors are seeking second degree murder and attempted murder charges.
