Notorious Hernando killer dies while on death row

One of Hernando County's most notorious killers has died on death row.

John William Kalisz, who killed his sister, another woman and a Dixie County sheriff's captain in 2010, died Tuesday afternoon at Florida State Prison. He was 61.

In a statement, the Florida Department of Corrections said its Office of Inspector General is investigating the death, which is standard whether an inmate dies from natural causes or suspected foul play. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

No other information was released, but Kalisz's sister, Becky Berarducci, said Friday that her brother died of natural causes and was in a hospital at the time of his death. She declined further comment.

On Jan. 14, 2010, Kalisz killed his sister, Kathryn "Kitty" Donovan, and her office manager, Deborah Tillotson, in Donovan's home on Wilhelm Road, west of Brooksville. He also shot his pregnant niece, Manessa Donovan, and Amy Green, an employee at Kitty Donovan's home-based business. Both survived but Donovan lost the fetus.

Afterward, Kalisz fled north in his van to Cross City. When Dixie County deputies confronted him, he shot Capt. Chad Reed in the mouth. Deputies returned fire, hitting Kalisz at least six times. Reed, a married father of two boys, later died. Kalisz was convicted of his murder in 2011 and received a life sentence.

In 2012, it took a jury about 90 minutes to convict Kalisz for the Brooksville murders and less than hour to unanimously recommend the death penalty. Hernando Circuit Judge Daniel B. Merritt Jr. sentenced Kalisz to die in March of that year.

Kalisz would later tell friends, family and investigators that he hated his sister and was out for revenge.

Months before the killings, Kalisz had exposed himself and masturbated in front of Manessa, then 17, in his sister's home. He was also accused of giving her nude photos and threatening the girl's boyfriend with a knife. After accepting a deal, he was convicted in October 2009 of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He got six years of probation.

The sexual accusations, he told friends, ruined him. Days before the murders, Kalisz lost what little he had when his mobile home burned down. The recovering alcoholic began drinking again.

Kalisz' attorney at the time, Assistant Public Defender Devon Sharkey, asked the jury to recommend a life sentence. Sharkey cited his difficult childhood, his years spent helping other addicts, his lack of support from family and his troubled mental state, among other reasons.

The Supreme Court denied Kalisz's direct appeal and attorneys with the Capital Collateral Regional Counsel in Tampa were preparing to file another round of appeals, Sharkey said Friday.

Assistant State Attorney Pete Magrino, who prosecuted Kalisz's capital case, said his office has notified family members of the victims. The Tampa Bay Times could not immediately reach family members.

"It doesn't matter to me how he met his death," Magrino said. "I think it's just better for all concerned that he met his death sooner as opposed to later, especially for the victims' families that his violent actions traumatized and continues to traumatize."

What's going on with the Florida Death Row? They had 2 cop killers who have died within a week of each other.
"There is a point in the history of a society when it becomes so pathologically soft and tender that among other things it sides even with those who harm it, criminals, and does this quite seriously and honestly. Punishing somehow seems unfair to it, and it is certain that imagining ‘punishment’ and ‘being supposed to punish’ hurts it, arouses fear in it." Friedrich Nietzsche

Or to be really boring, in a universe with infinite possibilities, eventually any sort of coincidence will happen.

Notorious Hernando County killer on death row died of low blood pressure, respiratory failure

A lethal concoction of drugs administered by the state of Florida was supposed to kill John Kalisz, one of Hernando County's most notorious killers, but a weak heart and respiratory failure felled him first.

As previously reported by the Tampa Bay Times, Kalisz died Nov. 3 while on death row at Florida State Prison in Raiford for the 2010 murders of his sister, Kitty Donovan and her employee, Deborah Tillotson. Kalisz fatally shot the two women and wounded his niece and another woman at Donovan's home-based business west of Brooksville. He then fled north, shot Dixie County Sheriff's Capt. Chad Reed and was shot several times by deputies before his arrest.

According to a medical examiner's report obtained Friday by the Times, Kalisz, 61, was admitted to a Jacksonville hospital on Nov. 2 after complaining of chest and abdominal pain and swelling of the abdomen and legs.

A recovering alcoholic with three previous heart attacks, Kalisz was suffering from severe sepsis, hepatitis C, end-stage liver disease, hypertension, coronary artery disease and hyperthyroidism, among other maladies, the report states. His heart slowed on Nov. 3 and hospital staff were not able to revive him with CPR.
