Capital murder arrest made in Alex City shooting death

ALEXANDER CITY, AL (WSFA) - The Alexander City Police Department confirms it has arrested and charged a man in a homicide investigation it opened Tuesday night.

Nicholas Seth Harrison, 21, of Valley, is charged with capital murder in connection to the death of Denzel Pope, a Sylacauga resident. Pope's body was found inside a vehicle along U.S. Highway 280. He'd been shot to death.

Harrison was pulled over for a traffic stop by Dadeville police shortly after the shooting. He was initially arrested on traffic offenses and drug charges, but Dadeville police found physical evidence they believed connected him to the Alex City shooting.

Alex City police responded to Dadeville, impounded the vehicle and other evidence, conducted interviews with Harrison and then arrested him on multiple charges including capital murder, discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle, and reckless endangerment.

Harrison was being held at the Tallapoosa County Jail on other charges at the time of his arrest.

According to Chief Jay Turner, officers were initially responding to what they believed was a single-vehicle crash on the westbound shoulder of Hwy. 280 near McDaniel Storage and the Tallapoosa Ford dealership. While en route, dispatch updated officers that the driver appeared to have been shot.

When fire medics arrived on scene they confirmed Pope was dead from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. Turner said they also found evidence that the vehicle had been fired into. A business owner in the area claims to have heard five gunshots.

Little red and blue flags mark the spot where Pope's vehicle left Hwy. 280, went up on a small hill and came to a stop on a level ground mere feet from the highway.

Police release new details in Alex City homicide

ALEXANDER CITY, AL (WSFA) - We’re learning new details surrounding the homicide of 21-year-old Denzel Pope.

According to Alex City Police, the suspect, 21-year-old Nicholas Seth Harrison, and Pope did not know each other. In fact, investigators initially feared this was a random shooting.

Police say an investigation had determined that Harrison pulled up beside Pope on Highway 280 West and fired at least four shots through the passenger window, striking the vehicle and hitting Pope in the head. Police say the homicide was premeditated.

"There are also two bullet holes in the vehicle from the inside out. They had not exited, meaning they had been shot from the inside," Alex City police detective Drew Machen said.

A third person, identified only as a female, has come forward to share information about what may have led to the shooting. Police say it is too early to say whether the female will be charged in connection to the homicide.

Those who know Pope say they are not sure why he was in Alex City in the first place. Pope worked at Blue Bell Ice Cream in Sylacauga. He also played wide receiver for the Sylacauga High School football team.

Friends describe Pope as being a "good kid" and "no trouble." Harrison also was not one to raise alarms in his community in Valley.

Minutes after police found Denzel Pope's body, Dadeville police pulled Harrison over and charged with him DUI. A witness called 911 reporting Harrison driving erratically on 280 East in Dadeville. The police found a gun his car and saw that his right-side passenger window had been shot out.

Harrison had his first court appearance Thursday, but we do not yet know who was appointed to act as his attorney. The court didn't set a bond since this is a capital murder case.

LIFE IN JAIL: Nicholas Harrison found guilty in murder case of Denzel Pope

    By Staff Report
    The Outlook

It has taken six years to get to trial but now Nicholas Seth Harrison will be in prison for life for the 2017 murder of Denzel Pope.

Harrison was charged and found guilty on two counts of capital murder Monday evening after a week-long trial. Harrison was charged with capital murder involving the death of someone while firing a weapon into an occupied vehicle and capital murder involving the death of someone while firing a weapon from within an occupied vehicle.

After waiving his pre-sentencing, Harrison was sentenced to life in prison without parole Circuit Court Judge Isaac Whorton.

Harrison was indicted in January 2020 for capital murder in the death of Pope, 21, of Sylacauga, who died after being shot while traveling in a light gold four-door 1993 Acura Legend on Sept. 19, 2017. Pope’s vehicle came to a stop on the side of the westbound lanes of Highway 280, just west of Tallapoosa Ford and across from McDaniel Supply and Storage.

Alexander City Police Department Det. Drew Machen testified at a preliminary hearing in December 2017 about written statements from witnesses in the case, including one from Pope’s girlfriend and her close friend.

Machen read statement excerpts that said Harrison was part of a plot to set Pope up for being unfaithful to his girlfriend. Another woman was then used to send messages to Pope and arrange a meeting. But rather than a woman showing up, witness statements indicate Harrison confronted Pope and chased after him from Walmart where the meeting was held.

ACPD Det. Riley Foshee testified about how Harrison was identified as a suspect and his role in the investigation.

A short time after authorities were called to the scene and discovered Pope deceased in his vehicle, a car was stopped for reckless driving by Dadeville Police Department officers, Foshee’s testimony confirmed. The driver of that car was identified as Harrison and bullet holes, a 9-mm handgun and five 9-mm shell casings were found in Harrison’s Ford Fusion, according to testimony from Foshee.

Other facts that came out in preliminary hearing included:

    • Foshee testified he performed a gunshot residue test on the hand of Harrison and it was positive, indicating he had been exposed to gunpowder.

    • Machen said an autopsy report listed a gunshot to the head as the cause of death and the means of death was listed as homicide.

    • Machen testified no gun or shell casings were found inside Pope’s vehicle.

    • The ballistics reports have not been returned from the crime lab to verify if the weapon and projectiles match the gun found in Harrison’s vehicle.

    • Video from Walmart and from Satterfield Machine Shop and Outdoor Living was also gathered and was said to depict the vehicles of the suspect and victim.

    • Harrison’s defense team asked why the women who allegedly helped in the plot had not been charged and if they had been given immunity or offered any type of deal. Machen said he didn’t know why they hadn’t been charged and had not been given immunity.
