South Carolina shooting leaves 1 officer dead, 4 others injured: official

    Fox News

One police officer was killed and four others law enforcement officers were wounded in South Carolina on Wednesday after officials said there was an "active shooter" situation in Florence.

The Florence County coroner confirmed the death Wednesday evening. Two sheriff's deputies and two other police others were reportedly shot, but their conditions remain unknown.

A suspect was in custody after the incident, and that the active shooting is "over," according to the Florence County Emergency Management Agency. Officials initially tweeted about the situation around 5 p.m. ET and warned people to "stay away from the area."

"We have FCSO along with City PD and other first responders handling the situation," the agency tweeted.

A spokesperson for the city of Florence said while working with the sheriff's office, city police were responding to an incident when they came under fire.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster called the incident "simply devastating news," and asked for prayers for the officers, their familes and "all of Florence."

"The selfless acts of bravery from the men and women in law enforcement is real," the governor said, "just like the power of prayer is real."

Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., tweeted that his "prayers" are with the officers and their families.

"This is absolutely devastating," Rep. Tom Rice, R-S.C., tweeted. "We are staying updated and sending our prayers to the police officers and their families."

Authorities said the shooting in Florence, which is roughly 80 miles east of Columbia, happened in Vintage Place, an upscale neighborhood in the western part of the city.

Update on Shooting of Officers in Florence County SC

PRESS CONFERENCE WRAP: Florence Co. SO was trying to serve a search warrant at a home in Vintage Place around 4 p.m. The suspect started firing at officers. Officials say they had an "advantage" because of the way they were positioned.

The suspect's positioning allowed them to have a view of fire that was several hundred yards. The suspect, we're told, was barricaded inside of the house with children inside. The standoff lasted approximately two hours.

The suspect is now in custody.

Seven LEO's in all were shot - 4 from the Florence Police Department, 3 from the Florence County Sheriff's Office. One officer from the Florence Police Department passed away. Chief Allen Heidler called that officer "a friend" and an officer he's known for 30 years.

    Officer Shot to Death Identified

UPDATE: City of Florence spokesman John Wukela tells me that Terrence Carraway is the officer who died from his injuries.

He had just received his 30-year service pin from the department.

A 20-year-old male inside the home was also shot, making him the eighth victim.

An AP source close to the investigation, but not authorized to release details, tells me today's shooting involved the family of Florence attorney Cheryl Turner Hopkins. Public records confirm that Hopkins is a resident of the neighborhood where the shooting took place.

Florence shooting suspect identified as 74-year-old disbarred lawyer

    By Tim Smith
    The Greenville News

FLORENCE – Authorities have identified 74-year-old Frederick Hopkins, a disabled Vietnam veteran and disbarred lawyer, as the suspect in the shootings of seven police officers, one who was killed, Wednesday in Florence.

Florence city police officer Terrence Carraway was killed in the shooting at the Vintage Place subdivision where six other law enforcement officers were struck and injured as a suspect held children hostage.

WIS-TV reports that Florence County Chief Deputy Glenn Kirby said Frederick Hopkins is hospitalized with a head injury and unable to speak with officers. WPDE-TV reports Hopkins fell at the scene.

Kirby said officers were trying to serve a search warrant involving an accusation that a 27-year-old person at the home sexually assaulted a foster child in the home.

The children who were being held hostage were released as Hopkins was taken into custody.

He has been charged several times in recent years, starting with a 2014 count of disorderly conduct, according to the Associated Press. According to public court records, Hopkins’ charges include two in 2015 and 2017 for “running at large,” an offense related to not restraining one’s animals.

Public records show he’s the husband of Florence divorce attorney Cheryl Turner-Hopkins. South Carolina Bar records show Frederick Hopkins used to be a lawyer but has been disbarred.

Check back and refresh this page for more on this developing story.

A massive police presence with officers from various agencies remained at the scene at the Vintage Place subdivision after nightfall Wednesday while a sheriff's office deputy provided an update on the situation at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Maj. Mike Nunn with the Florence County Sheriff's Office said a bullet-resistant vehicle was used to evacuate wounded officers from the scene.

The suspect remained barricaded in the residence with children and a standoff lasted about two hours, Nunn said.

President Donald Trump, Gov. Henry McMaster and U.S. Sens. Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott were among officials to post messages of grief and support Wednesday night.

Man faces additional child sex assault charges following deadly Florence shooting

    By Fox 46 Web Staff

FLORENCE, SC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A man is facing additional child sex assault charges after being arrested with his father following a deadly shooting in Florence earlier this month.

Seth David Hopkins, 28, has been charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

Deputies with the Richland County Sheriff's Department said a second victim of sexual assault was discovered this month. Hopkins is charged with first-degree Criminal Sexual Conduct (CSC) for sexually assaulting a minor under the age of 11-years-old.

Investigators said the incident occurred in Florence between 2009 and 2010.

Hopkins was taken into custody following a deadly shooting that happened at his home on Ashton Drive Wednesday, October 3. Florence County deputies had arranged to interview Hopkins around 4 p.m. that day in connection to the child sex assault case.

As law enforcement arrived on scene, Hopkins' father, identified as Frederick Hopkins, 74, reportedly started shooting at offiers as they were getting out of their police cruisers.

During the ambush, a total of seven police officers were shot. Fifty-two-year-old Florence Police Sgt. Terrance Carraway died on scene. Frederick Hopkins has been charged with murder and six counts of attempted murder in the deadly shooting.

According to the Richland County Sheriff's Dept., three Florence County deputies are still in the hospital. Two remain in critical condition and the other had been updated to being in stable condition. A City of Florence officer is also still in the hospital.

"Please continue to pray for the officers in the hospital," the sheriff's department said Friday.

The FBI Evidence Response Team and RCSD's Crime Scene Unit are continuing to process the scene.

Accused killer of Florence police officer denied request for public defender

    By Jo Brown
    WBTW 13 News

FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) - The man accused of gunning down seven Florence law enforcement officers, killing one, attempted to acquire a public defender Tuesday morning.

Judge Thomas A. Russo heard the request from accused murderer Frederick T. Hopkins, Jr., 74, who is charged with the murder of Sgt. Terrence Carraway and six counts of attempted murder related to the shootings of three other officers, a Florence County deputy and two Florence County investigators.

Judge Russo denied Hopkins' request for appointed counsel citing the income of the alleged killer's wife. The judge said Hopkins was not limited in means and could afford his own attorney.

Hopkins argued that he doesn't personally make enough money to hire an attorney and he doesn't have access to his wife's money.

"Even though we've technically filed jointly, I never get to really see her (wife) income, or anything like that," claimed to accused killer. "She keeps her stuff separate from mine."

The Richland County Sheriff's Office plans to host a press conference on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Florence with the latest on the investigation of the Oct. 3 shooting.

Florence deputy dies almost 3 weeks after shootout

    By Emily Bohatch
    The State

Weeks after being wounded during a shootout in an upscale Florence County neighborhood, a deputy has died.

Florence County Sheriff’s Office investigator Farrah Turner died Monday, according to multiple news reports, including WPDE-TV.

She was listed earlier in the day as being in critical condition after having her feet amputated a week ago, according to a statement from mother Katie Goodwin.

“This horrendous act of violence has altered my daughter’s life forever but I do believe that God has a plan for her,” Goodwin said in the statement.

Since the Oct. 3 shooting, Turner underwent nine operations, according to a GoFundMe page Goodwin shared. She spent most of her time in the hospital in intensive care, according to the statement.

Her father told WPDE that Turner’s leg was severely wounded during the shooting, but the family was initially hopeful it could be saved.

As of 8:30 p.m. Monday, the fundraiser had collected more than almost $10,000 of its $300,000 goal.

“She has devoted her life to protecting others, so now it is time that we do our part to show our appreciation for her service and commitment,” the GoFundMe reads.

The shootout left six officers injured and two killed. Officer Scott Williamson of Florence police is still in critical condition, and two other deputies — Sarah Miller and Arie Davis — were released from the hospital over the weekend.

State seeks death penalty against accused Florence mass shooter

    By Nick Doria
    WMBF News

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – Fred Hopkins, the man accused of killing two Florence officers and injuring five others during an ambush in 2018, appeared in court Thursday morning.

Solicitor Ed Clements served Hopkins death penalty paperwork.

The hearing before Circuit Court Judge Michael Nettles lasted about 15 minutes.

Hopkins, whose attorney was not present during the hearing, claimed that legal procedures had not been properly followed by the state.

“You have no jurisdiction to give me that notice,” Hopkins told Nettles.

During the proceedings, Hopkins insulted Clements and several other representatives from the state before he was led away.

The deadly shooting happened in Florence’s Vintage Place neighborhood on Oct. 3, 2018.

Officers were there to serve a search warrant on Seth Hopkins, Fred’s son, following allegations of child sex abuse.

Fred Hopkins then allegedly opened fire on authorities.

Florence police Sgt. Terrence Carraway died at the scene. Florence County Sheriff’s Inv. Farrah Turner died for her injuries sustained in the ambush a few weeks later.

Seth Hopkins pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor in 2019. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Fred Hopkins faces two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder in connection to the shooting.

Alleged Florence cop killer tells court he cannot afford legal representation

    By Richard Caines
    The Post and Courier

FLORENCE — A South Carolina man, accused of killing two police officers and wounding five others, was back in a Florence courtroom Wednesday morning.

Frederick Hopkins Jr. was transported from the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia and brought to the Florence Judicial Center, appearing before South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Eugene Griffith Jr., who will also preside over Hopkins’ death penalty trial for the slayings of Florence Police Sgt. Terrence Carraway and Florence County Deputy Farrah Turner, both killed in the 2018 shooting at a home located at Vintage Place in Florence.

Hopkins was again challenging his “indigent status” — or his ability to afford his own legal representation — which a previous judge overseeing the case had found him not eligible for a public defender.

Hopkins’ pro bono lawyer, Aimee Zmroczek, said that Hopkins first filled out the application for indigency on Oct. 10, 2018.

“As we sit here today, we’re 715 days into this case with no official attorney appointed,” Zmroczek said.

She pointed to the only change on the application over the past 715 days being a 2014 GMC that was sold and “is no longer considered an asset.”

Zmroczek asked the judge to either to remove her from the case or appoint her to represent Hopkins. She has not been paid for more than a year.

“I’m in a position — I have the entire file here — if the court finds that Mr. Hopkins is not indigent, I will hand it over to him and he will represent himself pro se, not that he wants to as you can see by his request in Oct. 2018,” she said.

Solicitor Ed Clements said that his office was at the hearing because they have recorded jail phone calls that give them the belief that Hopkins attempted to defraud the court concerning his financial status.

Clements said that he is not opposed to Hopkins having court-appointed counsel if he fits the criteria to obtain it. Clements said that Hopkins does have a stream of income and brought up his collection of 137 guns — a collection that was appraised at $62,000, according to Clements.

“We had an expert go value those guns — that doesn’t include the guns that were used in the crime,” Clements said.

Zmroczek said that Hopkins is not aware of where the guns are, although it was brought up at the end of the hearing that they are being held for safekeeping in Richland County.

Judge Griffith granted Zmroczek’s motion of being relieved from the case, then questioning Hopkins about his current financial status.

“I have nothing,” Hopkins. “All I have is Social Security.”

Hopkins said that the GMC was sold for scrap and is not aware of the location of the gun collection.

“I don’t have it now,” Hopkins said. “I have no idea. I can’t even speculate sir.”

Hopkins was asked if he has any personal property other than $200 that he previously claimed to have in his possession.

“I don’t have anything, nothing, he said.” Hopkins added that he gets around $60 a week from his daughter that is strictly used for the canteen at the detention center.

“She is my legal representative, my attorney of fact,” Hopkins said.

Judge Griffith did not rule on the “indigent status” question, but tasked Hopkins’ daughter to prepare a declaration of income of assets, a form that comes from family court.

Hopkins told the judge that “except for Social Security, it is zero across the board.” He said that the former judge brought him a pair of eyeglasses because he “couldn’t read the documents.”

Judge Griffith gave Hopkins daughter 30 days to provide the form and return it to the court. He said that he will reconvene the hearing in 40-45 days.

Hopkins told the judge that he would not be able to “drive” to the hearing.

“I’ll get you here,” Judge Griffith said. “I’ll make arrangements that you’re here. I gotta have you here, so we’re gonna make that happen.”

On Oct. 3, 2018, police were called to the Hopkins home on Ashton Drive to serve a search warrant on Seth Hopkins, the defendant’s son, following an allegation of child sex abuse. The arriving authorities were ambushed by gunfire, allegedly by the defendant Frederick Hopkins.

Seth Hopkins ultimately pleaded guilty to one count of criminal sexual in the second degree and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The elder Hopkins faces two counts of murder and five of attempted murder.

Judge Griffith said the trial could be held in the next 9 to 12 months.
