Cameron Willingham Sentenced in 2018 UT Murder of 4-month-old Nevaeh King

Provo man facing death penalty pleads not guilty in murder of 4-month-old baby girl

A Provo man pleaded not guilty Monday in an aggravated capital murder case stemming from the death of a 4-month-old girl in March.

23-year-old Cameron Willingham is accused of killing baby Nevaeh King, who was his girlfriend’s daughter.

Provo police said that on March 19, officers responded to the call of a baby that was not breathing. The baby was flown to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

“Through the autopsy, it was found that she [Nevaeh] had serious head and neck injuries as well as abdominal hemorrhaging,” said Sgt. Nisha King with Provo Police.

Police announced the arrest of Willingham several days after Nevaeh died.

Willingham appeared in court Monday, where he entered a not guilty plea for 1 count of capital murder and 1 count of obstructing justice, a 2nd-degree felony.

His pretrial conference is scheduled for Jan. 14, 2019 at 8:30 a.m.

Provo man headed to prison for killing girlfriend's infant, attorney calls him 'monster'

Sometime before she was beaten to death in March 2018, a picture was taken of 4-month-old Nevaeh King wearing a hot pink onesie as she looked at the camera with clear blue eyes.

This was the picture on the T-shirts of family members who attended the sentencing for Cameron Willingham, a Provo man charged with killing Nevaeh last year.

“We think we’re happy now that we finally got justice for her and we don’t have to think about him anymore,” said step-great-grandmother Pat Perkins.

Willingham, 24, was sentenced on Thursday to five years to life in prison for child abuse homicide, a first-degree felony.

In exchange for a plea deal, a second-degree felony of obstructing justice was dismissed. He was also given credit for the 13 months he spent in custody at the Utah County Jail.

“When you’re a child, a defenseless infant, you should be able to feel safe and loved and not abused,” said step-grandmother Sherri Brown. “We were robbed of watching this child grow up.”

When she was born, Perkins remembers the doctor saying Nevaeh could win a beauty contest because she was so beautiful. The baby’s name is also heaven spelled backward.

According to court documents, Willingham was alone with Nevaeh at a home in Provo when the infant stopped breathing on March 19.

The baby was flown to Primary Children’s Hospital and died after spending 36 hours on life support. Doctors told investigators Nevaeh had minimal brain activity at the hospital and likely was brain dead on arrival.

In an autopsy, investigators found the girl had extensive intracranial, brain and spinal damage, as well as blunt trauma to her head, severe injuries to her eyes and multiple hemorrhages in her abdominal area.

Doctors at Primary Children’s Hospital said the baby’s injuries had been caused by severe shaking, squeezing and multiple impacts to the head.

“She was too young to call for help, she was too young to run away or walk away or even crawl away as he hit her,” said prosecuting attorney Carl Hollan. “What kind of monster could do this to a precious girl? What kind of monster could hurt someone so innocent?”

The baby also showed signs of severe malnutrition and dehydration, “showing that this child’s death was likely caused by inflicted injuries and child abuse,” the charging documents state.

“Neveah will never learn to read. She will never see a rainbow,” Hollan said. “He stole her first step, her first word, her first food.”

Willingham reportedly told investigators he had watched the baby for four hours and he was the only one with the child before the baby stopped breathing.

He also told officers he put the baby on the couch and had given her a bottle with formula to keep the baby from “freaking out,” court documents state. He then reportedly took a shower and found the baby unresponsive on the couch.

Investigators found the baby bottle near the sink and not near the child, charging documents reported. The bottle was reportedly full of dried formula and mold.

During police interviews, Willingham reportedly told officers he did not injure the baby. He later told investigators he tossed the infant onto a bed.

“The baby had so many injuries to her head and her face and her brain that the doctors couldn’t count all of them,” Hollan said. “It’s disgusting that this sort of thing would happen to someone as sweet and innocent as a baby.”

Willingham had a previous conviction from 2016 for assaulting a pregnant woman.

“I’m sorry for the events that took place and for the things that happened,” he said during the sentencing. “I wish I could take that day back.”

Family members expressed disappointment and anger that the mother of the baby did not face any charges for child neglect. The baby reportedly only weighed 9 pounds when she was taken to the hospital.

“I feel better today knowing he’s going where he’s going,” Perkins said. “We all know she’s with her grandpa in heaven and she’s not going to be hurt anymore.”

Wait, what?? FIVE YEARS to life? That’s ridiculous! And that 4-month old baby weighed NINE POUNDS? And the bottle was full of DRIED FORMULA AND MOLD? Why, for the love of God, isn’t the mom behind bars?? And the poor, sad family members? Where the holy heck have THEY been? The whole lot of them are useless wastes of space. The ONLY good thing about this is that this baby is finally safe from all of them.
