Kwame Adom Carpenter Sentenced in 2015 CA Murder of Moureen Gathua and Kyan Gathua-Carpenter

Anaheim man found guilty in stabbing death of wife, infant son

    By ABC7

ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) -- An Anaheim man has been found guilty in the 2015 stabbing death of his wife and their infant son, officials said.

Kwame Adom Carpenter was found guilty of killing Moureen Gathua, 24, and their 6-month-old son Kyan Gathua-Carpenter in June 2015.

Investigators said after an argument with his girlfriend, he stabbed her and their son with a kitchen knife and then fled the scene.

He was found and arrested the next day following a short police chase.

The initial charges were two felony counts of murder with special circumstances and a sentencing enhancement for personal use of a deadly weapon. He faces a minimum sentence of life in state prison without possibility of parole and could be eligible for the death penalty.

A sentencing hearing is set for April 26.

Anaheim man gets life in prison for killing his wife and 6-month-old son

Prosecutors say killing came in midst of heated argument at Anaheim apartment

    By Sean Emery
    Orange County Register

SANTA ANA – An Anaheim man who stabbed to death his wife and their 6-month-old son was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Kwame Carpenter, 27, stared forward as Orange County Superior Court Judge Richard M. King reflected on the violent deaths of 24-year-old Moureen Wanjiku Gathua-Carpenter and 6-month-old Kyan Carpenter.

“This was a horrific case,” the judge said. “The image that is in everyone’s mind is the child crawling with a knife in his back.”

Family members of the victims watched silently from the courtroom gallery but did not give any statement to the judge prior to the sentencing.

“This case has put the victims’ family, and the defendant’s family, through significant heartache,” Deputy District Attorney Steve McGreevy told the judge.

Gathua-Carpenter and Kyan Carpenter were both stabbed multiple times with a butcher knife after, prosecutors say, Gathua-Carpenter discovered evidence of her husband’s ongoing infidelity.

During an argument, prosecutors said, Gathua-Carpenter tried to lock Carpenter out, but he broke the door down and then chased after her when she tried to flee, pulling her back into the apartment.

While Carpenter brandished the butcher knife, Gathua-Carpenter held their baby and begged Carpenter not to hurt her, McGreevy told jurors during the trial. Carpenter grabbed Gathua-Carpenter, threw her to the floor, stomped on her head and knocked her out, then stabbed her “over and over again,” McGreevy said.

Gathua-Carpenter died at the scene, while the boy, who was also injured in the stabbing, died at a hospital a short time later.

Carpenter was arrested the following day after leading police on a car chase.

During the trial, Carpenter’s attorney, Assistant Public Defender Sara Nakada, said Carpenter attacked his wife in a fit of passion and accidentally killed his son. She said Carpenter – known to his friends as a quiet, calm person and loving father to his son – had repeatedly told his wife to stop hitting him and to let him pack and leave the apartment.

The jury deliberated for less than a day before finding Carpenter guilty of two counts of first-degree murder with enhancements for use of a deadly weapon and committing multiple deaths.
